Pros of edging to art: - you accumulate a lot of energy - you can harness that energy on productivity - the limitation gets you excited to fit things in like a fun puzzle - you pump out quicker and more fluid shots of animation - you harden your artistic appreciation - you start getting closer faster to release your projects - you become better at doing it just to your imagination - you get the broader picture more worked up than getting stuck on details - it's better than going all out then feeling tired once you finish writing the climax

@@enderguardian7443 Yeah, what I meant is in this kind of projects (TV series in particular) you should rather do the bare minimum in terms of quality for most shots that would not be too important just to save energy and not burn yourself out (they just need to meet a minimum standard, they don't need to be the absolute best, especially if it's just a transition shot that no one's gonna notice), and only focus on the few shots that you might like and want to use in a portfolio for a future project. Remember: TV series will ask you +10 seconds of animation per day to meet quotas, which is quite a lot, especially for inexperienced artists. And even for feature films where you'll have more time you might end up getting so much directorial retakes that at some point that all the energy you poured in your first versions might be wasted since the end result will have nothing to do. Don't work hard, work smart. 👍 Even for personal projects it helps a lot.

It happens naturally when we get older. We often prioritize completing projects efficiently rather than pouring everything into them. Every year feels a bit closer to the end, and I want to make sure I finish the things that matter most before then. Okay, now I have a dilemma. I only achieve a flow state when I create my own work. When I work for others, translating their vision into visuals requires applying the best techniques I have, but it lacks the spark I feel with my own ideas. While I can translate their vision effectively, it's good enough to secure some awards and recognition for my clients. The real challenge is balancing the need to create work that sells with the desire to pursue my own passions, which keeps me out of that flow state. Haha, it's a classic 'egg and chicken' dilemma! I truly envy artists who can draw for others and maintain that creative flow. It feels like a daily struggle for me.

I remember back when the hobbit movies released some essayist was talking about why hobbit sucked and LoTR didn’t. There are many reasons for it (Peter Jackson not wanting to do it not withstanding). But one reason was the budget. LoTR had a limited budget and they had to think *inside the box.* We often get told to be create and think outside the box. But one rarely talk about how beneficial it is to think inside one.

The most helpful advice I've ever recieved: giving your "best" has to be spread out. If I'm giving 100% in my art, then other important areas in my life like relationships or taking care of myself are getting nothing. To be honest it's been hard for me to fully apply this advice 'cause I didn't know how to give any less, but think this video gave me a tangible place to start. Imposing limitations like time, medium, and level of finish, trusting that the result doesn't have to be "perfect" to make the creative effort worthy. Thanks for the vid!

I know someone who was working on a comic 4-5 years ago, they gave up on their original comic idea that they really wanted to do because they didn't think they were good enough yet. But now theyre still stuck like 5 years later trying to do that other comic first, they'll probably never actually finish any of these comics. Creative people with infinite freedom seem to actually end up accomplishing nothing. I support an animation patreon that recently blew up and now Im thinking oh great theyre probably going to struggle like hell to ever actually produce the 2nd episode because they are going to have all these insane self imposed standards because of this support when in reality very few people care and just want to see you make the thing.

I feel like this is exactly the video I needed on my life right now. I been burned out for a while trying to finish projects that feel endless because I want to do my best, but just ends with my ADHD pushing me back and make me crash. Will restart with baby steps, put some rules and limitations to finish a lot of smaller stuff before jumping on the bigger things again.

I love the thought of edging. Hardest thing for me is, to have enough self-control to commit to edging. I'm insanely overwhelmed by all the available material nowadays and I'm way too curious about all the things I could add to my load of knowledge. It always ends up the same way and as crazy as it sounds, since edging is the goal, I never get to finish because I only want to finish if my load consists of all the things I've thought about adding to it. I don't know how to break this devilish cycle. This video hits way too hard.

This applies to so many other creative things. As someone who is (trying to) develop games, it's insanely important to place limits to avoid derailing the project into unobtanium.

This is such good advice, it's so easy to fall into these struggles of doing too much and burning out so fast. I found myself able to get so much more done when i allowed myself to make less "perfect work" and focus on certain aspects - like focusing on movements or transitions with rough loose drawings with less detail rather than redoing lineart every few seconds. I can always go back and add the neater details, yet if I am burned out- I just scrap the project to get it over with- it's so important to balance out where you're putting your effort.

I remember one day reading a rant from someone (sadly I don't remember who) about the VFX state in Hollywood after first stage of the MCU ended talking about how they were forced to pixel f*ck. Constantly having to overwork themselves to make sure a a couple frames were perfect in its details. Details that no one would see and didn't affect the movie in any way, shape or form. They were forced to do a lot for something useless and invisible. I think this video is rebutting a similar idea we all are have suffered from one day or another. I like it.

It's goid to not over bake. Simple can work just fine. It's goid to help others understand they don't need to reach that "perfect" that they imagine. Sometimes ones personal can end in delays or even procrastination due to wanting to meet that personal view of "perfectuon". I often tell people don't over think it. First get the basics down that you need. If you have spare time go further. Don't need to create an art block due to the "perfection" we personally seek

creative limitations is so under rated. some people don't like it because of the word limitations thinking it will entirely hinder them completely, but very few people know that many inventions & great minds of history were able to do what they did and create because of the limitations during their time. you can do more with less.

But illustration wise, I used to polish lineart so much, even zooming in to the pixels and drawing and erasing strokes over and over again to just realize that it looks way too stiff and lifeless. Personal anecdote but I feel it highlights something important to keep in mind: A non limited set of tools can hold some artists back, yes, but to others it can be a blessing. It's a difference between "feeling overwhelmed by the options and things to consider" and "having something available to facilitate any idea you come up with". It all comes down to an individual's mindset and workflow as to whether they should use more, or fewer, tools.

The trick will be to keep the quality at an acceptable level, maybe it's all about the limitations really. I stopped shading the drawings completely now xD

I don't think this is a state to actively strive for, but there are days when I'm really tired and I can feel it in my bones that my drawing hand isn't going to be at its best. When I draw on those days, probably what comes out won't be worth keeping or showing to the world, but I'll probably end up drawing way faster, sketching out my ideas quickly rather than wasting time polishing up a few pixels nobody will see at a glance.

I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS AFTER WATCHING XMEN 97. THE ANIMATION IS MOSTLY CHOPPY AND LIMITED OUTSIDE OF ACTION SCENES BUT STILL COMMUNICATES THE STORY AND CHARACTER EMOTIONS VERY WELL. I CAN TELL ROTOSCOPING IS INVOLVED BUT JUST PAYING ATTENTION TO THE REUSED ASSETS AND HOW EFFECTIVE IT STILL IS MAKES ME SEE THE ANIME INFLUENCE ON WESTERN ANIMATION AND MAKES ME CONSTANTLY CONSIDER HOW MUCH ASSETS I SHOULD CREATE INSTEAD OF ALWAYS DOING STRAIGHT AHEAD DETAILED PENCIL TESTS THEN INKING AND COLORING AFTERWARDS, I GET BURNED OUT FROM HOW MUCH DETAIL I WANNA AD IN EVERY SCENE. I CANT FINISH MY PROJECTS WITH THAT STYLE.
