My cousin, now in his forties, was taught ASL as a child although he is hearing. He has cerebral palsy and has never been able to speak. Learning to sign enabled him to communicate more clearly and easily with his family and friends who also know sign. Sad to say, it never occurred to me to learn until recently. I'm now enrolled in sign classes at a community college.

Hats off to you! Splendid job done referring to references to justify why Deaf babies benefit greatly from acquiring ASL from the start.

Great video Justin, I enjoy the format of your video and the positive points made. I am new to the Deaf culture and glad that I am welcome to become a part of it. Some day many of us will end up hard of hearing or deaf, how will we communicate? Sign Language ASL, LSQ, BSL, LSF, Chinese SL, etc. there are over 60, whichever one, pick one that you can immerse yourself in. It's a language of expression. Learn it! You'll love it!

This is a wonderful message and hope that it send across around the world so that they can be aware that yes we do exist. I do hope that even for hearing people should learn as least the basic ASL.

Oh, sorry I didn't see that you had clarified your stance. I'm happy you looked into it. I'm sure you know, as I do, we keep learning the language no matter how long we've known ASL. Good luck to you on your certification testing! :)

I m so glad to clear this up for everyone to see what it should be done.. I can understand and respect their own Deaf communities of Deaf culture to speak for their country which it s normal thing for them who live in their country.. I dont see any problem and upset about it.. That s why I said we must fight for our ASL for Deaf Americans so it s theirs too. I support their Deaf communities of Deaf cultures.

thank you so much. It is my hope that parents recieve the necessary guidance and resources to encourage sign language aquisition in dependent of legal mandates, but if not I feel laws need to be in place to protect a child from neglect and to insure language aquisition is immediate, as is a child's natural right.

Yes, it may very well help the child feel less frustrated! ASL has been used successfully to help hearing children with language acquisition issues, it's helped some children with autism acquire language. I would suggest you adults learn it too as you said, but may I suggest that you hire a tutor or teacher for the whole family? Someone that is just learning is not equipped to teach the language, it's not that simple. I wish your family luck, especially the little one. Maybe you could update us?

@silentone15 We Deaf American people are fighting for our ASL to bring it back into our ASL education that is the whole reason for us to push harder until it changes for the better..

I definitely agree with you. Because ASL is used by so many people already, it's easy for people in the USA to spread it to deaf people in other countries who do not already have a sign language, but I don't think we should force other people to use ASL in England and France and other places with their own sign languages. When you said "International Sign Language," I thought you mean everyone should learn something like Gestuno.

The issue is about developing a linguistic foundation to support learning future academic concepts and languages. While the cochlear implant appears to be an amazing tool, it is only a tool and not a substitute for our natural ability to hear. While the Deaf student learns how to hear and speak, his peers learn English, Math and Science.

I see what you are saying now. So what s the issue after all we all know there are many Deaf languages in our Deaf communities of Deaf culture? I respect their own native sign language as it s very unbelievable for me to see in my own eyes about ASL itself that has in their native languages to be part of it. Don't you see it yet?? I found a real answer by the bottom of my soul that tells me something. ASL is very unique native language as well as their Deaf foreign languages are , too. :)

Please reread what I reply to your vlog... I did not mention that I go for hearing world system... International sign language is my focus on... Why should other countries give up their own sign to use ASL... That is " DOMINATION" style by ASL groupies...

@silentone15 This is in reference to Americans only, not internationally. There is ASL then there is ISL. Nothing about getting rid of ISL.

What do you think of ASL for children with apraxia. My niece has a 3 year with normal hearing but is unable to communicate orally. I know that we as adults would have to learn ASL and teach it to him. His words so unintelligible and I hear that it would be and aid to ending his comunication frustration. He understands and is intelligent but cannot speak clearly. I understand that for non hearing person that can be hard to imagine. But believe me it really is damaging to the child.

He didn't use a conceptually inaccurate sign, he followed "grow" with "develop". That is not inaccurate, the sign you mention is used to depict the physical growth, not language acquisition and development. His choice of signs is clearer to me than what you suggest.

Of course I am profoundly deaf and never finished schooling... My point is that you still avoid one issue... ASL is for USA deaf not other world deaf... your focus on ASL, discriminate against other signers of their choice...

@silentone15 Too Much? This is one of our true Deaf languages and cultures in our Deaf lives. Is that a problem for you to deal without AGBELL s power and control to take over our Deaf languages for their spoken language s sakes only. No THANKS! It s time to change to get back our BI BI Language for our Deaf American babies/children. We have the right to have ASL for our Deaf children s education to gain the intellectual skills and social skills thats the most important part in our lives.

Nah, You are not being accused by me however ISL is the one of Deaf languages of Deaf culture. Whats more we are in America so what s your point for not having ASL in our Deaf education?? White men did taking their language away from Native American. NO mistakes for me to say it part. Thanks.. :)

Focus on ASL is too much , unfair to others... Ignore ISL ? International sign language? To gain one world cooperation, we must consider others ,not Let ASL get too much power.

@DeafSweetMind Accuse me of AGBELL fan. you did not read real good. I talked about ISL and we can not force other countries to use ASL. International group is more powerful than one group, fight for rights. We do not want to be labeled as monopolist over sign language. Be humble, Respect other Sign language and develope better "ISL" And more AGBELL has rights to be in business. You know that you can not force feed other, just sweet talk other to accept .

your reply to my vlog? I don't vlog, and you haven't replied to me before. Reading your comment, I'm going to assume you're deaf based on your style of writing. It doesn't matter whether they're deaf or hearing; no people should be forced to give up their language for the reasons I stated in my last comment. I'm sorry, but I'm still having trouble understanding your meaning. I don't mean to be offensive, but your English skills aren't good enough to convey your meaning through writing.

Oh, so all hearing people should abandon their languages and everyone should all just learn one new language for the whole world to use. Forget the history and culture embedded in any language, and the importance of language to any group of people. Let's all just conform so we can make sure it's fair.
