Kirstie Steging I did immersion in the deaf community as a young guy who liked beer and music and needed volunteer work for a resume. My life was changed watching 4000 people signing to people in a conference. I just watched and learned and am happy to speak ASL still as an old man.

Great performers, they did such an amazing job at conveying the emotions of the song! I've been looking for more people to subscribe to that perform music in asl, as someone hearing trying to learn sign I've found music crazy helpful for vocabulary retention and recall since i already know the words to the song when i recall the lyrics I quickly remember all the signs with it! and because facial expression is so critical in communication with signing so many asl music videos are much more moving and emotional than the original songs

I'm not deaf or a CODA, but had a good friend in high school who was and had to learn to speak for his hearing parents. Then I worked in a home for disabled adults and had to learn some sign to communicate with some of the residents so it's always facinated me. But I've found this video recently and am glued to Azora's facial emotions in this. I will turn around and watch it again right after, swearing "this time" I'll watch him sign and again I'm drawn to his face. The intense look is like he's staring right into my soul. It makes you want to take away his pain and be that "Somebody." I have a huge huge crush.

I've watched over 30 different Songs in ASL to get an idea of what I'm going to do at the end of ASL 1, but not only is this my favorite song, but also my favorite video of them all. Your facial expressions, and the way you yelled at her with the punch of when you signed the chorus was just amazing. And also, you're very beautiful and I love your hairstyle. Definently gonna use this to help me along the way. Great job

This video is awesome, and watching it with the sound off really causes me to reconsider my assumption that deaf people can't experience music. If you think about it, the main reason people like music is because it evokes emotion, and the rhythm and and variation in notes and volumes just gives music this really conducive, sensual, impactful medium for conveying emotions. It's clear that this same emotional impact can be conveyed through sign language, through avenues that parallel how hearing folks experience music. Things like facial expression, movement intensity, rhythmicity of motions, etc. I bet "listening" with speakers or headphones that enhance note vibrations adds a whole new dimension to the deaf experience of music as well. Fascinating stuff.

I only know a couple of basic signs that I learned when I was a kid but I don't think I ever really felt that song the way I just did. I am slowly learning sign language. I have found that by watching videos such as this I have learned quite a few words just by repetition. I am up to about 20 words now. I have several deaf family members who sign, and an aunt who is an interpreter, but they do not live close enough for me to interact often. I think its a beautiful language with a lot of expression through body language.

This is very cool. I attended Western Oregon University which has one of the best ASL programs in the country and probably best west of the Mississippi. I was able to learn some from my friends who were in the program, who were mostly from music and theater backgrounds. I learned that when you sign, it's not just what your hands do, you have to show what you are signing in your face and body language as well. It's like a daily performance piece.
