It always cracks me up how Eoin gets this “1000 yard stare” whenever Fitzy gives his longer explanations haha. I’m not adept at video editing but can someone do a “Hello darkness, my old friend” zoom - slo mo - and black white clip ? I think it be hilarious. Thanks for the content gents !

Agree heavy 150kg+ bench pressing might be more preferable, but cleaning and strict pressing 100kg+ is alot more badass, you rarely see it and it's alot more athletic, much better workout, most i've ever managed is 100kg x 2 strict press, that guy at the end with 114kg x 3 must be benching close to 200kg, insane

In combat athletics, the athletes I know that are proficient and strong at cleans, front squats and OHP variations including push press and jerks are far more powerful than those who have massive bench presses and back squats.. not that they’re bad movements, but I don’t think they’re as preferable to these sports as the former
@declanosullivan8749
@declanosullivan8749 3 жыл бұрын
@@leftphilange69 I agree, cleans, pressing, jerks, require far more athleticism and explosiveness. I have no clue about combat sports, but follow a few elite 100m/200m sprinters and they all incorporate them in training. I don't see them benching much

Gurph's point brings up another interesting discussion point: Push press vs bench press? You can still get quite "heavy" stimulus from push press

Yeah, but imagine trying to teach a football team to push press on top of everything else. Gurph was saying teaching a decent strict press is difficult enough

A lot of athletes use push press and/or jerk variations instead of strict overhead presses, on top of bench press instead of strict overhead work. Look at how shot/discus throwers train, they seem to love these two movements.

I think a big thing with the bench is it's comparatively non-fatiguing as the rest of your body doesn't need to do as much stabilization work compared to a military press where your core and back have to work a lot harder. So I think for overall recovery if you had someone do 5-10 heavy sets of standing military press compared to the same with the bench, the athlete would be less recovered on the actual playing or practice field the next day compared to the bench even with heavier weights. In my opinion nothing really builds the core stabilizers better than the military press and front squat, both of which you use less weight but require a lot more stabilizers than their cousin powerlifting exercises (back squats and bench.)

Since you mentioned rom/mobility in comparing the 2 lifts, how far would you go in addressing a field athlete's mobility? Say you have an American football player who can only back squat to slightly above parallel, would you work on increasing his range of motion? Would you have him do some other lift for leg strength? Is it only a problem if it hinders their sports performance? Big fan of the videos btw. Keep it up.

My 2cents: -squat with an elevated heel (start empty bar and build up in weight, only use an elevation high enough to allow which allows full rom) -train ankle mobility/flexion -train his tibAnterior How’s his ability to decelerate?

@johnford5568
@johnford5568 5 ай бұрын
Because it's hard. Overhead press is a full body exercise and a weakness exposer. Only after every little weakness along the spine and legs has been addressed, only then does the exercise become about the actual pressing itself. Even then, the shoulders may need to be retrained in the active position, wide down and back.

Do you think that a Bench press is more applicable to sports than a push press? Incline Press seems more like the actual movement used in most sports than a Flat Bench press because we are limited with how much we can push horizontally from a standing position when the torso is not supported. I've always believed a 225lb push press for reps would be a better NFL combine test than the 225 lb bench for reps. The push press shows you can exert that force on the field. The NFL combine is soon so your response would be timely.

@importantstuff1130
@importantstuff1130 3 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair the Strict Press has its percs when it comes to train the upper back, which is something the bench press does not do. Unfortunatly the bench is so much more common, that it's difficult to estimate which one would be better for let's say greco roman wrestler, mma fighters, boxers or fottball players, if all other circumstances are the same.

I really hate bench press and I do much better in vertical pressing. But I still think bench press is a better workout for athletes if choices are limited. First, horizontal pressing strength is more important in different sports and sprinting. Second, it trains more muscle but less fatigue.

I'm not happy with my 1bw press because I've done it in my first year of lifting. 1bw OHP is not a big deal especially if you're a lightweight lifter but to progress beyond that is sooo much harder.

I disagree, Benching correctly is more technical. Also technicality on bench is more important bc it is more dangerous especially for the shoulders. OHP is far more intuitive, its just harder so people shy away
@FistfulOfGabagool

how? ohp involves movement of the scapula, head movement, greater range of motion, shoulder mobility, core bracing and stabilization, etc.. bench is simple: retract/depress the scapula, don't flare your elbows, push.
