11:05 You're allowed to get it overhead any way you like (just not to rest it on your head). But most SHWs will push press it and some who can't do that like Eddie (bc of his knees) or Biby (technique, I guess) or have more trouble with the clean will do some hybrid bench thing. In the 80 kilo (I like to call us strongmanlets) category category, I think it's 50/50 between push presses and proper (split) jerks. Depends on the athlete.

Finally made it to Sikastan! (at least in a video) Also regarding pressing: there was a time where Dmitry Berestov had some sort of Pressing battle with Klokov. He is/was definetly around 160kg as well. I also read Klokovs Press PR is 180kg (but I have never seen a video). There is also a video of Chingiz Mogushkov strict pressing 180kg iirc (somewhere - probably on Klokovs channel) and some ridiculous push presses of Chingiz (on par with his jerk numbers :D). And I guess many strongman could have been included as well ;). First of all Iron Biby.

God damn Gurph, I didn't think your strict press was that high! I only saw the 100kg clean and press you did a few years back. On the subject, which I've talked about elsewhere, is there ANYONE, weightlifting or not, who has strict pressed 1.5x bodyweight ASIDE from Klokov? He was about 107kg at his Power Weekend, which means he was just over 1.5x body weight. I can't think of a single other weightlifter who has done that. I do recall seeing a video on Klokov's Instagram where he did a 1+2 clean and strict press at 165kg. There are rumours he's done 170kg, though no video exists to my knowledge. I can certainly believe it though. Concerning Larry Wheels, I've always maintained that isn't a strict press. Extremely impressive, but a strict press it is not. Too much back arch, momentum from the bounce, and he started halfway up his face. And nothing feels so good like ripping a huge strict press in the gym.

I dunno if you guys looked it up or really even care but I'm gonna tell you anyways because algorithm. Push press and split jerk are 100% allowed in Strongman it's just that 99% of the time the athletes are so brutally strong they just brute force the weight overhead and say fuck the technique. You see the "smaller" lifters like Novikov and Kerney push and split jerk because they aren't as "fuck off strong" as people like Eddie Hall or Iron Biby which has led to some controversy when Rob Kerney took the American log lift record off of Robert Oberst who didn't accept the record calling it the "American split jerk record" Maritns Licis also used to split jerk on the log but stopped because it was destroying his knees
@egodominustuus9167
@egodominustuus9167 3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason strongmen don't use the split jerk is because of the time it takes to master the technique. Unlike weightlifters who only have two lifts they have to do in competition that they can primarily focus on, strongmen have a whole host of different lifts and events that can show up in any given competition, so they have to be more of a jack of all trades. The only strongman competitor who I remember using the clean & jerk in strongman competition was Raimonds Bergmanis, who had an Olympic lifting background, though I also know that Martins Licis has also mastered the clean & jerk from his KZbin videos.

Are elbow sleeves just like a huge no no overall for strict pressing? I’ve been using them for my 1RM attempts and heavier work sets, I don’t think I get much out of them outside of like keeping the elbows warm. On like a purely placebo level I think they help me wedge a little harder as I’m pressing, but beyond that I don’t think they contribute to strength that much. Though I guess from the perspective of an oly lifter they are banned in comp, so I guess that makes sense?

What are your thoughts on the "press 2.0" that gets pushed a lot in powerlifting circles? As I understand it there's a dip before the press (kind of like what Larry Wheels does) and a bend at the hip to start the movement. It's definitely not as pretty as a normal strict press, but I won't knock it since I haven't tried it.
@Zethalai
@Zethalai 3 жыл бұрын
They should just do an honest push press at that point.
@aidanivesdavis
@aidanivesdavis 3 жыл бұрын
I've tried that and I think it's a shitty lift. From experience, it doesn't feel good on the back and the technique is just janky overall. Like, why are we doing it this way? If I wanted to use my lower body to help move the bar, I would do a push press or a jerk. The point of the strict press is to strictly train the parts of the body involved in pressing, not to get good at whipping your hips back and forth. The Olympic Press (or Press 2.0) was invented as a way to basically cheat back when the Press was a competition lift in weightlifting. They would try to get away with whipping their hips and laying wayyyy back under the bar, since they weren't allowed to bend their knees. Better to do it strict, I say. Build legit upper body pressing strength, no tricks.
