That's really interesting honestly, cause I'm autistic and Sonic was literally my entire childhood. I started with Sonic Unleashed back in 2008 when I was 4, and for the next 10 years, all I did was play Sonic games, and draw comics of the characters ALL the time. If I wasn't playing a video game or working on schoolwork, I was drawing Sonic comics. Didn't matter where I was. At family functions, school, boy scout camping trips, etc. I eventually grew out of it and stopped drawing all together, but I still buy the new games and watch the movies when they come out and still love the franchise. It's interesting to see it all laid out and how it explains my childhood.

This weird obsession with autism and acting like it has anything to do with specific interests is kind of annoying. Which this gets really bad cause they act like there is something wrong with you if you don't like this stuff and are autistic. People make a personal connection then conflate it to have a meaning it doesn't. Recent example would be Laois from Delicious in Dungeon. The whole conversation around that character was deranged. Sonic is just broadly popular. You can do this will a lot of stuff tbh. It's super easy to make connections where there aren't any with most popular media. Super common correlation fallacy. A character says this or acts this specific way that I also act like so they are literally me. I've seen this same discussion with both pokemon and minecraft. You know. Two of the most popular pieces of media in the world. Can't ever criticize any autism discussion though. Autism is kind of a runaway train cause there is a lot of presumed good will.

It must have something to do with childhood obsession, which a lot of notable people who have autism grew up during the time Sonic was around. None of the much older autistic people I’ve seen have it with Sonic. It’s with animals (or one animal), trains, models/dioramas, game shows, LOTR, old tech, documentaries - things that they grew up with in their time. Animals will always be a big interest though and Sonic is one, so makes sense. Was MGS something you grew up with or impacted you growing up? I’m sure everyone has childhood interests they keep all their life, but for those with autism it’s just a bit more intense

Let's say you meet an autistic person who keeps talking about koalas, because it's his special interests, so it might feel like "autistic people have one obsession, but regular neurotypical people have many hobbies and interest." But statistics and study shows that autistic people are obsessed, but usually not with one thing, but many different things. And usually have more hobbies and interests than a regular neurotypical person. Neurotypical person usually talk about few same things over and overs (partying, gossip, celebrities, food).

I play multiple instruments and watch a lot of content about music. I'm autistic and my current obsession is Dark Souls, and I saw a lot of people saying they fixate more on horror themed media. It's definitely more complicated than you're making it out to be, but it's also not. It's basically just what can give you a crazy amount of stimulation without overstimulating you. That's up to the individual and where on the spectrum they fall. Lower functioning people might gravitate more to simple cartoony things because it's not overwhelming to them.
