I can’t think of anything bad about the snake itself. Most ball python issues are in relation to one’s ability to maintain proper husbandry (hides, temp, humidity). And of course being picky eaters but that is also occasionally related to too much stress which is again usually caused by something we as owners do like handling or not providing the correct set up.
@lordvisserys91875 жыл бұрын
I house my ball python in a 5ft Christmas tree tub and only spray once a week humidity stays around 70 - 60%. I think hunger strikes are the biggest downside but I've had mine for 2 years I've never had a problem feeding him. Usually when I see ball pythons go on feeding strikes it's due to husbandry issues like wrong temperature , humidity not enough space, not enough hides, substrate, poor breeding practices, over-handling or incorrect food size. I think they're still one of the best beginner snakes, corn snakes have easier husbandry but ball pythons are usually a lot more chill I think it mostly just comes down to which you prefer.

Thanks for this video! :) Newbie ball python owner here, and I'm enjoying them a lot. :)
My BP was my second snake, although I'd only had my first snake (Cali King) for a couple of months when I got him. I've had my BP for almost 3 months now and he's an excellent eater, he's never refused a rodent and will even switch between mice and rats without any issues. Of course that may change in the future, especially once he reaches his adult size and/or in the colder months, but for now I'm very lucky.

A point to consider: Corn snakes might be low maintenance, but that also means you won´t learn the skills to handle a more demanding snake in my opinion. If you want a ball python or whatever I think get it, but make sure to do all the research and be ready for the extra work.I see no point in getting a pet you don´t actually want just to train yourself.

so i had a ball python as mi first and only snake. at the moment everything has been perfect. of course i do care a lot about temps and humidity, i havent tried f/t because its not my thing. so hes been happily eating live. he has never refused a meal. he sheds like a king. im not always home, so maybe that helps him. (of ocurse i change the water every day) i just go out and come back late. the handling has been awesome hes such a curious boy but only when i put him in the floor or something to climb on.
@TheCharleseye5 жыл бұрын
Your lifestyle is actually perfect for a pet snake. They really are happiest when they're left alone most of the time. Just don't freak out if he goes off feed for a while (usually in the late Fall but it varies). When temps start to drop and the barometric pressure shifts, they usually take that as a sign that it's time to breed. They become very single-minded unless that itch is scratched. I'm actually going through an accidental early breeding season with two of mine right now. Reconfiguring their setups led to their ambient temps dropping a couple of degrees and I didn't catch it at first. Now they're climbing the walls every night, looking for each other and won't take food. Oops! Looks like their romantic vacation is going to come early this year! 😂

My first and only noodle (currently) is a ball python. I was very lucky to get a girl with a fantastic appetite and she is chill about handling. She also never misses a meal unless she is in shed. I will say though that humidity has not been the easiest to manage.
@seanb0wers5145 жыл бұрын
I'm a new Ball keeper as well. And I have found that it is easier to manage the humidity within the "Hides" rather than the whole enclosure. Especially if you can get a gecko type hide. That is... one with a base that you can fill with substrate or damp moss. It's where they spend most of their time. And it works excellent for sheds. Not sure what to do when mine out grows the largest hides I've got. Get inventive I guess. Good luck with you Snake!

@c_elss5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Well you can usually see visual signs when they are sick. But always check with a vet. Also you should be checking the weight of you snake. In 9 months mine lost 25gs. Now if he starts to look thin and sickly, I would have made arrangements. But eyes were bright. Shed was whole, no RI, humidity was good. And I only physically held him once every 2-3 weeks just Incase he was in fact stressed out. But I did everything else like normal, changed bedding, repti spray, adding water to dry substrate. I just used my best judgment. And didn’t stress as long as he wasn’t losing significant weight.

I have to say, I find all of these "common reasons" to be odd. Ball pythons are so easy to keep that people literally keep hundreds of them at a time, in plastic tubs. In those tubs, they eat consistently, shed perfectly, defecate/urinate regularly, breed annually, and live long lives. If people are having a hard time keeping BPs as pets, they're probably over-thinking their setup (or worse, anthropomorphizing their snakes). My BPs each have two hides, a water dish, two heat sources (on thermostats) and cover (because snakes don't like to be in the open, even when they're out of their hides). That's it. They miss a meal if they're in blue or if it's breeding season (most pet keepers don't even realize that their snake is "in season" and just freak out because they stopped eating). Otherwise, they're incredibly consistent. The people at my local pet shops think I'm some kind of snake whisperer (or a liar), when all I did was follow the directions. It's not rocket science. It's just snake keeping. Snakes don't want what _you_ want, they want what _they_ want. Food, water, shelter, heat, and the annual roll in the substrate with a desirable mate makes for a happy ball python. All else is just added stress for them _and_ you.
@lisamccullough51505 жыл бұрын
Charles Eye Ridiculous. Humidity is very important and what you’re doing is keeping them alive. Surviving and thriving are VERY different things.
@TheCharleseye5 жыл бұрын
@@lisamccullough5150 Or it could be that you're the kind of irrational person who thinks they know a situation well enough to make judgements, just because they read a brief overview of it. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that one. At no point did I say that humidity wasn't important. If you knew anything about keeping BPs, you would know that the right combination of heat, large water dishes and pre-moistened substrate - in an enclosure that doesn't have too much ventilation - creates the perfect humidity level for Ball Pythons. If not, all of my snakes would have bad sheds and URIs. They don't and (once they came into my care) never have. Maybe next time, you should put your ego away and ask for more information before casting judgement. My snakes are in perfect health, with perfect sheds and _extremely_ consistent feeding patterns. If you think that's merely "surviving," then you're not a person I would ever ask for advice on raising reptiles. Have a nice life.
@lordvisserys91875 жыл бұрын
Honestly temperament wise they're some of the best snakes out there. For humidity I house my BP in a 5ft Christmas tree tub and have no problem with it only spray once a week humidity stays around 70 to 60 percent.The only non beginner friendly thing I think is their tendency to go on hunger strikes, but I've had my snake for nearly two years now and haven't had a problem feeding him. Also once they get full grown and you're feeding them small adult rats you only have to feed them every other week. I think they're one of the best beginner snakes out there smaller colubrids like corn snakes have easier husbandry but ball pythons tend to have more easy going personalities.

Hey Kaitlyn, I know that the possiblity of it biting you is anxiety inducing but rest assured corn snakes can be pretty docile but fast. Some tips to make sure that it doesnt bite would be when getting the snake out of the enclosure be sure to not reach at its head but pick the snake up from behind. Also make sure you do handle your snake a often, because it can help mellow them out and get them used to you touching them. Shows them you are friend not foe. I hear this all the time and know from personal experiences that you will lose your snake anyone that says they havent is lying or it'll happen soon. But when it does happen check sides of wall, under furniture, and turn the heat down and look at warm places:stove, dryer, water heater, space heater, or by windows. Hope that helps

My best friend has a ball python, and I think the worst (and probably only actually bad) part about them is their issues with feeding. The enclosure really isn't that hard to keep controlled, they're usually very handleable and generally polite little snakes. But my friend's snake ate twice in the first 6 months she had her, and refused mice otherwise. Tried smaller sizes, different colors, asf juice, nope. Didn't matter what she did, the snake just didn't want to eat until she was ready 🤷 Got scary for a little bit there as this was a baby ball and she got pretty skinny, but she gained back the weight and chilled out after she started eating again, no clue what changed

(I started tying this on a vid from a year ago so im putting it here so it's more likely to be seen by you or other reptile owners) I think my substrate makes the tub difficult to heat up, especially on the cool side, would paper towels work better because its thinner? Also, if they are used to being fed in a separate box, will it not want to eat in it's enclosure? The snake is a healthy weight and is eating so idk how much of a picky eater is, its just what i've observed from holding it in the store and asking. The guy recommended to feed them in a separate area to keep them from thinking if the enclosure gets opened it means feeding time, but I don't plan on doing that because multiple sources said that was a myth and I want to leave it alone while eating bcuz of stressing it out or it throwing the food back up.

I feed my adult ball every 12-15 days, it really depends what size rats you give them. You don't want to give them too much, it just shortens their life span. Mine goes off feed for about 4 months of the year over winter, so I try to fatten her up a little before winter comes.

I enjoyed the vid, because people need to know the prows and cons of every species. Honestly the thing that kills me the most about owning my ball python is keeping myself in check so I'm not stressing her out "to much". Which I knew getting into, but as a 1st time reptile owner (who got a ball python) I have to understand being reserved for her. She still gets socialized, she loves my husband 😊. She is also still a baby at 10 months, so we're all still learning each others boundaries. I would love to see more con vids in the feature, to give people more to think about when it comes to accessible reptiles. I feel it will help people from impulsive buying animals they may not be ready for.

Your videos are really informative and helpful! :) Do you have some tips on how to get a snake used to handling, especially one that never really was in contact with humans before? I'm thinking of rescuing a corn snake instead of buying one of a breeder & there's one near me that was found in a random garden, but she's really skittish and scared at the moment

The key to taming a snake is to accept the fact that you are going to get bit, it is going to bleed a little and you're going to be fine. The thing that keeps many snakes from being tamed is people's fear of a snake bite. Cornsnakes and ball pythons will cause _far_ less pain and damage than a typical house cat, so there's absolutely no reason to fear their bite. Accept the inevitable, handle the snake calmly and after a while (times vary by animal), it will stop biting. Once they realize you aren't going to hurt them and that biting you won't make you put them down, they just stop. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Beside the fact that many breeders are terrible, putting the looks and money the snakes can bring them in over the health of their animals and not educating their costumers over genetic issues. I think the worst thing about BPs is the feeding stop. I don't like it when rats go to waste. If you prekill you could still freeze them or feed them to a boa, but you shouldn't refreeze thawed rodents and that's a bummer.

Hey there! I love you and your videos! I have a serious question and was hoping you could help me. I am hoping to get a ball python in the near future but for some reason I have a fear of the heat lamp or under heat mat causing a fire while I'm at work! What is the best way to make sure this doesn't happen? Thank you 😘

Kassie Johnson thermostat, they’re very necessary anyway, so your animal doesn’t literally burn

My mom is terrified of snakes, and I've always wanted one, but couldn't have one. I mean scared. I don't know why, she's from England, it's not like where my wife is from (Australia) and everything can kill you there, haha. Any way, my wife and I have had my house for almost 5 years now, and recently, I thought "Why not? It's my home, I get to say what's in it." plus, a ball python is easy to take care of, it doesn't need me around all the time, I do have other interest like hunting, fishing, competition shooting. A ball python could care less that I've been out all day target practicing or fishing. My dog though, he acts like I left him at the shelter and decided to come back and get him haha! I do take my dog fishing with me, which is nice to have him around. A ball python isn't as expensive as my dog, that's another benefit. My dog's food is $60 a bag, a month (he's a 120 lbs German Shepard from East Germany). So, everyone out there with a mom that is terrified of them, just wait till you get your own place, then you can have what you want. If you have other hobbies and activities you like to do, the ball python couldn't careless if you're out enjoying yourself, haha! Although, I do love my dog's greetings when I get home from a long day of competition shooting or hunting, and I love giving him loves when I get home, and I like the his company. I enjoy keeping a snake. It's not time consuming whatsoever (except for cleaning days it can be). I've kind of trying to talk my wife into letting me get a Boa, but so far she has said "Ball Pythons are as big of a snake I go". We'll see what happens. I'm looking into buttering her up with something nice. Maybe that'll work.

I heard the reason why some snakes don’t eat for a long time is because they measured their owners and are planning to eat them and are making room 😳. Is this true?

Well if you watch the Snake Discovery that they talk about what the best beginner snakes are the ball python was I believe in the number three spot so.

Hey! My snake was at the verge of shedding so she was staying in her hide like she usually does, today she had her head popping out and she looked fresh! As if she shed but I couldn’t find it anywhere in her inclosure, not sure what to think of it. She’s a Colombian Red Tail Boa

My ball python hasn’t stop eaten yet she eats every week. 🤔 maybe once or twice she refused for a week but it’s just because her meal the previous week was huge.
