lifelong Baton Rouge resident and although the murder rate is very high and only increasing, very very few of them are random acts of violence. a vast majority are involving people (killer and victim) who are involved in the dope game. if you aren't involved in the street life, your chances of being a victim of a violent crime drop SIGNIFICANTLY. I've been approached and asked for money countless times in BR and a fair share of them were a bit persistent as hell but I wouldn't say anyone has ever been trying to start a fight to rob me or anything. trust me, if anyone at those gas stations had wanted to rob you or carjack you, they would have just done it not start off asking for a dollar. they'd start off putting a gun to your head and running your pockets.

It’s basically anything north of Florida Boulevard. I’m from Baton Rouge and what’s always stood out to me is how you can go from upscale neighborhoods to low income high crime rate areas just by crossing the street. All in all BR is a safe town, if your creeping around north BR at night you’ll probably find Trouble, it just all depends on location. The downtown area is very outdated, traffic is a complete nightmare. It’s a shame how we have so many Fortune 500 chemical manufacturing companies within 20 miles of our capital and everything is shit.

When I was growing up there in the 80's and 90's, I lived in the really nice part of town. I didn't like BR so I left the state altogether after I graduated. I have been checking into what my old neighborhood is like now, and it has completely changed. Shootings, bank robberies, drugs, etc. The virus has spread all over the city. It won't be long before it turns into Detroit with all the corporations fleeing.

To anyone that's relocating for a job here to BR, allow me to give some perspective as a native of 25 years: The areas shown were around the most dangerous areas of the city. But that's one area of the city. I used to live in these areas, but moved long ago to a better place, and I don't have any issues. I can get gas at night, get out of my car and just feel safe doing so. He is right about the underlying problems. Literally, you will have wealthy suburbs and areas on one side of an intersection, and on the other, ghetto and poverty, but then again, most big cities have this same thing going on. If anything it just shows the disparity of finances among people, but that's a whole other topic. I understand what he was trying to do, in giving people and understanding of what life can be like here, but there's two sides to everything, and he just chose to show the poorest portions of the city. There's a lot of beauty and good places to live in and grow in here in Baton Rouge.

You are spot on about Baton Rouge, I lived there for a good while after getting out of the US Army , the 8 plus years I lived there I hated it . There was times I tried to make the best of living in BR and it still sucked , the people there are very closed minded and judgmental not to mention more than half the places I went to such as going shopping 🛒 , going to a bar and a restaurant I was rarely treated well and got a lot of bad customer service . 🤦🏾‍♂️ through out the years living in BR I was mostly depressed 😔 and wonder 💭 why in the fuck I moved back there , for the most part BR sucks and it’s really ghetto and kinda segregated . To be honest BR have more Cons than Pros I wouldn’t recommend to anyone to move there I moved out of BR to Houston in 2017 and I’m so glad 😃 I left , Baton Rouge isn’t a horrible place to live but it not a good place to wanna raise a family . If you’re black like myself or brown don’t expect to get treated well at certain places your best bet will find another city 🏙️ with more diversity and opportunity for yourself.

I can only think of 2 small areas in the tampa bay area that aren't as nice, but i never felt unsafe. I was also shocked by how bad the roads here are and how many businesses are closed. I grew up there. In those same neigborhoods. But Baton Rouge was "White" back then. I rode my bike from Evangeline, up Plank road, all the way to baker to visit my cousins. Never had ANYONE bother me. A bbllack family bout a housee just down the block. My dad said "there goes the neighborhood" and we moved to Denham Springs. But he was right. Soon, black families took over ALL the neighborhoods in 70805 Where I grew up. Businesses on Plank were thriving. Blacks took over, and now they're all boarded shut. I'm glad I grew up there, but I'd never go back.

Lived in BR for many years. It's a shit hole and getting worse. The schools are bad, the elected politicians are lazy, crime is bad, the job opportunities are not that good, the music most of the youth listen to glorifies drugs and violence, I mean the city is primed for failure. The city was decent in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s. But after Hurricane Katrina, the decline accelerated. I do not recommend living in BR unless you live in the really rich nice areas, stay in those areas 95% of the time, and do not send your kids to public school unless it's one of the 2-3 really good public schools (do your research).

The only thing I can say about Baton Rouge is that I'd never be there at night. Quite honestly I never would have gone there at all but when I lived in NOLA Baton Rouge was the closest Whataburger & I'm a Texan. Sometimes you just need Whataburger if that's what you grew up with. But even during the day I really never went there by myself and I don't think I ever took a girlfriend there. Thing about Baton Rouge is it's impossible unless you live there to know where not to go. Don't get me wrong as NOLA is the same way especially before Katrina but driving around NOLA I never had my pistol in my glove box but I sure as hell had it going to BR.

Don't marvel, there are good sides of town and bad sides of town. There are wealthy people that live there. LSU is there. Refineries and plants. Dow chemicals. The port of Baton Rouge. Are the wealthy people supposed to live in the ghetto? Are the doctors and chemist and Master P to live in the hood? Plus, the city almost doubled is size from the displaced people from New Orleans. This state has a french culture from before Napoleon. Louisiana was before the founding of the United States and grew up speaking French and watching French on TV and listening to French radio. The food is different and the beliefs are different. The largest swamp in North America is in Louisiana and many things and people disappear there. Plus people from Louisiana know not to go down Plank road are ride through Scotlandville. Welfare and the democrat handouts encourage the thugs to stay thugs. Where are you from? I travel a lot. I bet I can find the bad side of town where you are from. Baton Rouge is the State Capital. Since you travel a lot, do you not notice that every capital city in every state including the US capital, Washington D.C. has problems. Again, because of the liberalization there. Thugs, crime, drugs. Crooks, thieves and bad guys gravitate to wealthy areas. More to steal. These people are in a culture themselves. Many generations of people and families that don't work and don't want to work. They are taught the art of welfare and foodstamps. They grow up fornicating and reproducing like rats. That echoes my exact sentiment and on my 5th day here I came to this conclusion. When it's good it can be real good but there's still an amount of bad kinda like Beaumont. It's better than Port Arthur TX I'd say but by much, probably not. See it sucks you in though because when you come to Lake Charles, you see a nice Books a million and Market basket and a few bars along that area too. Something Port Arthur doesnt have or that you may even be hard pressed to find it in Beaumont. Maybe it's = to Beaumont in desirability. Slightly better than Port Arthur as there's nicer stores in Lake Charles and nicer restaurants.. besides that though it's totally debatable.

my city (the whole state actually) has lots of problems but you're talking with an air of superiority about 'these types of people'. its human/animal nature to look to acquire something you want/need, preferably as easily as possible and while sustaining as little damage as possible. as you touched on, the poverty down here is some of the worst in the country so there are a lot of people who do not have much at all. I know this is my 3rd comment in only a few minutes but if you're reading them, I'd appreciate if you answered a question for me? when riding around areas known to be rough areas in a city known for its murder rate at midnight, were you not looking for exactly what you found? you could also find gas stations where a stranger dressed up as a tiger pays for your gas for you and gives you a beer lol. you could experience being aggressively approached for money and the free gas from a human Tiger and everything in between. but if you go looking for dirt, it's likely you'll find it

Louisiana is a state hindered by failing education systems, low educational attainment, illiteracy, lack of economic/employment opportunities, high crime rates especially violent crimes, a broken criminal justice system, poor health outcomes/lack of affordable healthcare, low civic/voter participation, lack of adequate and safe affordable housing, large wealth inequality gaps, systemic racism, political corruption, and there's just a general lack of respect for others or lack of respect for life! We know that all areas have these same problems. But, it's just that NYC, LA, Miami, and other metro areas in the USA have enough of wealth to hide that side of their cities or at least overshadow our attention with their glitz and glamor and shining things while places like Baton Rouge, Jackson, and Montgomery don't have that benefit! The truth of the matter is that Baton Rouge and Louisiana in general really have a lot of wealth that passes through this state when you account for the tourism industry, the oil & gas industry, and all of the other natural resources that we have that are exploited by out of state oligarchs who extract these resources to sell but don't make meaningful investments within the state b/c they are not pressured by the Louisiana Legislature to financially contribute to Louisiana's education system, infrastructure, or our citizens/residents, etc. For example, the Exxon plant in Houston pays billions of dollars more in property taxes than the Exxon plant in BR which are similar in size and facilities! They are basically the same operation in two different cities, but the difference is Exxon property taxes are making significant investments towards Houston's education system and infrastructure and not to BR then you wonder why Houston's schools are roads/streets are so much better than BR. As with anything else, all you have to do is follow the money!! But, the bottom line is that the people and politicians here let them get away with it!!!

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge. I agree this is one bad city. In more ways than one. Yes the crime is a major problem. Don't think it is isolated to the hood. Cause it definitely isn't. Perhaps more predominant in the hood. The people here are so unfriendly and clanish. You can forget Southern Hospitality in this place. People truly are disrespectful here. The only reason Baton Rouge is still on the map is because Louisiana State University is still operational. The neighborhoods that surround the LSU campus are dangerous, and crimes against students on and off campus are increasing. To add insult to injury, an unincorporated suburb of Baton Rouge voted and passed a resolution to form their unincorporated area into a city named St. George. The Mayor of Baton Rouge sued to stop the formation of the new city because Baton Rouge would have been left bankrupt without that tax base. The Mayor won. The number of these cases in the last twenty or so years has been increasing as citizens see their tax dollars being spent in a manner that does not meet their needs or benefit their own communities. Baton Rouge Citizens have been leaving the city in droves due to out of control crime, substandard city services, and fiscal mismanagement by city officials. Unfortunately, most cities, towns, and communities in Louisiana are plagued by these same problems.

I had two Sons who went to LSU. We had them live in the dorms so they wouldn’t have to leave the campus. One Son decided to go walking by himself at nightfall as he was used to doing that here in a sleepy Louisiana town. Thank God he had won State Cross Country running matches, because he had to out-run two guys who had followed him.😐🥺😑. He never did that again. If you get out of the LSU campus area, your ass is grass.
