In the last video, we talked about why you should not be a data scientist. If you still think that data science could be the right career path for you then this video is for you! In this video, we're going to flip it around and talk about why being a data scientist is awesome! Which I clearly think it is since I'm here talking to you still as a full time data scientist :)

About me
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

@@discharger61 Yes, I was a Philosophy major in undergrad. In summary, I always wanted to do analytics of some sort, so when I found DS I knew it was right. It's not as big of a leap as it seems. They're both analytical, it's just quantitative vs. qualitative. If you're asking how I got accepted, DS falls under information science so there aren't math or tech req's, and my credentials were well above average.

Its been a long time since I commented (or had time for youtube, still don't but trying to distract myself from panicking over my Discrete math class), but if I recall, when I last commented I was still working on my associates. I finished that right as covid hit, took a year off, and am now a Junior studying Data Science. Right now in Statistics (easy A so far), some nonsense Liberal Arts class (forced to take it, has nothing to do with D.S.), Discrete (halp.) and intro to java (Most fun I've ever had in school). Your videos are what inspired me to pursue this major/career path, Thank You so Much! Its the perfect fit for me, a healthy mix of computer programming and math, with a dash of whatever I'm interested in for fun (physics, engineering, stats/combinatorics, even political theory and philosophy (thought that might be a bit of a stretch as far as how it relates to D.S., i think i can make it work)). I am currently pursuing a masters in data analytics but my current tech background is non existent basically. So for someone who doesn't come from a strong tech background, but is hoping to build it up by the end of the masters, is an entry level data scientist role feasible to earn or would I have to advance my way up to a data scientist by starting at a data analyst or another role first? Ay my mum had the same experience as you do and all she had to do was get the master's degree. So yeah hope this helps

Honestly probably better off with a 2-month bootcamp to get to entry level and get some projects under your belt. In addition to a pretty tailored and focused curriculum you also tend to make some pretty good connections as a lot of the instructors/speakers will also be managers of their own DS teams

Ok she mentioned Cali so that can also add to why the pay is high. Most SWE and Data science position are in the six figure range because of the cost of living is much higher. To make that kind of money over lets say Virginia, Maryland you will need experience that is a must. So the glassdoor number is not to be taken seriously unless, like she said you live in a area where the cost of living is much higher. The average salary for someone with a Data Science( Education) on the west coast with a masters 77k to 89k this is assuming you get hired directly from school. The higher the salary usually commensurates with experience. I have also heard that some employers will look at where you previously worked and how much you were paid. To get an idea if the position would be suited for the pedigree assuming you came from Cali might could be a good thing or a bad thing.

Hi Tania. I am in Canada. I have a PhD in Mathematics. I am a little short of programming skills. I am not sure how to transition because self study does not work for me considering my circumstances. Shall I go for a Masters in Data Science or do a Bootcamp with UofT

Well, the best degree currently is Computer Science because Data Science and Analytics will soon be super technical and coding heavy with automation

Do you ever feel overwhelmed at work, where they are demanding over the top forms of analysis that requires a lot of brain work or is it mostly busy work? Thanks -from a computational biologist who works in a lab

As a software and business consultant I routinely feel this way. I have far more complex problems that require testing, modeling, technical documentation, programming, etc. than I can handle. It's all actually very creative in nature, as all problem solving is creative although many don't think of it that way, which is very mentally draining and can't always be forced. I can't listen to music, podcasts, or multi-task at all while I'm working because my tasks require 100% focus and a bit of "focused daydreaming" where I come up a new program design, mathematical formula, or process to solve a complex problem. Yet somehow companies still expect you to pump out 8-10 hours a day of this type of work. I struggle to be creative for 8 hours a day and people in these types of jobs would greatly benefit from having some busy work to fit into the times where they just can't get their brain to do any heavy lifting.
