Ever since Batman year one, short hair black woman Selena Kyle is my favorite version. So I’m completely cool with Zoe Kravitz playing her. Even Halle Berry(not the suit), though that didn’t save the catwoman movie. there is no reason to complain about Catwoman being black as long the catwoman part is spot on! Would be same when it comes to Two Face imo

Shes been black countless times. I don't really see the point of arguing about something as arbitrary as the race of a fictional character, *when their race* isn't important to their character. Unless we're talking as if Batman has to be some sort of eugenic Aryan-seeker optimizing the best possible 'white stock' for his genes, Talia Al Ghoul style lmao.

Ikr, I understand his reason for wanting to be a fence sitter, and I cant say I blame him as it's good for $, refreshing to hear him actually cover something on the right since it's been a while. I enjoy Tom, I genuinely think he is just young, and learning. I dont think he has a lot of bad takes, I think he is just REALLY REALLY deaf to modern day politics. Not that I think he's bad or anything just I think he'll grow to stop being so pessimistic/doomer/cringelord. I genuinely think he is just either slightly right leaning internally, or insecure with his politics, to the point where he just mostly critiques the left without acknowledging the nuance. As he says in the video he doesnt want the "blue haired crowd" (which is kind of cringe but I understand the demographic he's talking about). There is a fine line in commentary videos where you can make fun of things while also acknowledging the nuance. I'm trans, and dating a straight white guy. I know even saying that I'll leave a bad "mouth feel" for some of his demographic, but personally I think his navigation of critiques on queer people in general is strange. Not that he is always bad, moreso that he is just a white straight guy, who doesnt have queer friends, at least ones that are comfortable enough to make fun of his mental image of queer ppl, to the point where he chills a bit on it.

The state of modern "media literacy" is such that I'm actually shocked to hear someone point out that a character's opinions and worldview do not necessarily reflect those of the writer/s or director. Then again, so much of modern writing is terrible because certain characters are obvious self-inserts of and mouthpieces for the writer/s or director.

One of my favorite scenes from Batman Beyond comes from the episode where Shrieves uses a sound amplifier to make people think they have voices in their heads. Shrieves uses it on Bruce and when Terry asks how he knew the voices weren't just in his head. Bruce responds: "The voices kept calling me Bruce. In my mind I don't call myself that." It really puts into perspective who is the persona.

I completely disagree and hate that. I know that Bruce timm beleive bruce wayne is the fake personality while batman is he's real identity but it is worth saying that Paul dini, who made some of the best batman episodes of all time, also thinks that there is this battle between batman and bruce where bruce plays the role of the characters torment who finds compassion for all his enemy and who made the vow to never take a life while batman plays the role of the dark vigilante fighting for a broken city. Also it is worth mentioning that that scene you mentioned, you could argue bruce is an aged man who has lost everything and therefore has given up to his identity of batman and no longer feels like bruce after all that's happened

One of the problems he’s facing in the movie is that he’s devoting himself only to being Batman and cutting out Bruce Wayne. yes… but you just barely miss the point. emperor palpatine only works because of darth vader. palpatine IS pure evil, but he’s a foil for vader. vader is almost pure evil but just shy of it, and the difference comes to a head when vader saves luke and kills palpatine.

@ethanpond1195 13 күн бұрын
@3br1ce7 I like that idea, but I think I disagree that Palpatine only works as a foil for Vader. Yes that's his purpose in the original trilogy, but in the clone wars T.V. show, there are a few episodes which he is in that just show his pure evilness and honestly I think it works great. Like when he has Fives drugged to make him appear insane so nobody would believe him, and when he shows up at the end of an arc, Kills Savage and makes Maul beg for mercy.

True, I also think some tilt the scales too far to make the villain sympathetic and blame external factors for why they ended up committing so many evil acts. I fuckin loved Matt Reeves' Batman. He intentionally includes 1:1 scenes of Batman and the Riddler doing the same things to show they are the same person, rationalizing their actions in different ways. During the Riddler interrogation scene you can see the other's face reflected in the glass next to the other, acting as a kiteral mirror for the two of them. The true Riddler and Batman come out when the masks go on. Both want to hurt people, they just have different targets. Both are targeting criminals, but The Bat is going for the low-hanging fruit (low-life criminals like Catwoman who are victims themselves, but still do bad things) and achieving nothing, and the Riddler is going after the leaders of the institutions, but probably hurting the cause through his terrorism. Both are telling themselves that they are doing these things to save the city and downtrodden, but their respective alter-egos are simply literal masks for their true desires, which is to take out their pain on others. I thought Pattinson's acting was great. He comes across as vengeful, awkward, insecure at times, etc. Batman being suave and cool so young doesn't make sense. He's a sheltered semi-orphan with very limited real world experience, and he is driven (through most of the film) by a desire for revenge, not altruism. The altruism is his excuse for taking out his pain on others. He's starting to get there by the end, realizing he needs to take a more active role in Wayne Enterprises to ensure corruption isn't stealing the funds, so the company can continue to operate and donate money to make change at a high level, and be more focused on actually helping people (and to do so he'll have to learn to play the suave charachter to network and make change). Ben absolutely doesn't get it. "He doesn't need to go to Madison Square Garden and beat people up" but he does! He just also has to go a step further and actually help people too. Yes, he needs to help poor people so they dont feel like they have to turn to crime. There is no defund the police narrative. The cops are overextended and lacking resources to do their job. they are falling to corruption because they feel helpless and downtrodden themselves. As tom said, this goes against Bens "fuck you, I got mine" and "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" (something ben has never had to do) ideology. Ben even seems contemptive of charity saying "money wont fix it." While failing to realize that beating up poor people who have turned to crime also achieves nothing. Battinson went hard

I agree Batman being cool doesn't make much sense and some okay him too charismatic. He is often shown to be good at small talk at and dinner party but still have trouble actually connecting with people and letting people see the real him. Him as the batman is his cool version, you need to see some Clark Kent to balance it out and retain some realism. I also think Batman being so visibly active and well known in the city gives the citizens hope. Often what makes or breaks someone's life is deciding to take the right path and lack of hope, self belief, and resilience is often the deciding factor.

Thank you Tom, you just made things right. ALSO very interesting that in this film, the bad guy’s goal is actually beneficial to the city. It takes Batman through this whole journey, learning about the corruption and unsure whether he sees a difference between himself and Riddler. He has to draw a line at murder but he’s still unsure that that’s enough to put himself on the right side of things. And he’s stuck in a situation where he even thinks the people deserve their fate. It’s the perfect plot to develop Batman as an early character, absolutely masterful stuff. Ben seems to not understand anything this film was trying to do

Depends on the story. The Joker is pure evil, and it works because his "one bad day" mirrors Batman's. Michael Myers is pure evil for no reason, and it works because that's unfathomable in a traditional suburban neighborhood. Flip the stories they are in, and although it would be a riot, wouldn't work from a story perspective.

I love a good sympathetic villain like the next guy but theres something about irredeemable villains like Penguin that I just adore mainly I love hating them. We see too many attempts of making a villain reasonable and you want to feel bad for them. But for me there something about passionately hating a character so much you pray on their downfall which makes me more engaged with the story. Sometimes they dont have to have a reason they can just be deplorable guys we love to hate.

Batman comes to realize through the movie that simply fighting villains whenever they pop up wont cure gotham, he's only fighting the symptoms and not actually curing the disease that is crime and corruption. (This is a realization that the other batmen already knew as they were more experienced by the in universe timeline of their movies, but pattinsons batman is new at this thats why he kinda sucks at being the batman when it comes to certain things like how he missed that carpet tool clue at first, and how to be philanthropist billionaire Bruce wayne to hide his true life as the batman.) tom is right this batman is actually going through character development where as the other batmen movies he is already fully or mostly fully developed as the batman/ bruce wayne alter ego. I would love to see more pattinson batman movies so we can see him develop over the course of them but idk if they're doing that with the direction james gunn is taking the dcu, im pretty sure he even said Pattinson's batman is not his new DCU's batman

Ben's completely right about Batman 2022. They tried to make Batman's entire arc that he's bad for not helping people in broad daylight; and by the end of the movie, he does. They tried to shame him for beating up criminals in the dark of night. That is literally Batman's entire shtick. The movie doesn't understand Batman at all. He walks up to criminals and tanks gunfire point-blank like Ironman, instead of stealthily taking them down. And of course, because it's a 2022 movie, the white man running for mayor is the villain; and white characters like Catwoman and Commissioner Gordon had to be race-swapped. It's unbelievable that you're suggesting Ben's the one who's racist for pointing out that the studio _race-swapped_ characters. Can you just talk about the Bowblax or Dream/Tommyinnit stuff already?

It's funny that Ben says that Long Halloween is his favorite comic book while criticizing this movie for Batman not capturing the villain, not preventing any of the deaths, being an accomplice to an accidental death when all of this happens in Long Halloween. The real Holiday in Long Halloween escapes and Batman never even finds out who the real Holiday was, Batman doesn't prevent any of Holiday's victims and Batman knowingly takes Maroni away knowing that Holiday would attack him and most likely kill him as he ends up doing.

I mean, let's be real, for Ben to understand Bruce's arc in The Batman as going from being apathetic toward suffering people (compared to his active hatred for criminals) to feeling compassion and helping them, it'd require Ben to admit that helping people is a net social good that improves society, and I don't think his worldview allows for that.

Also, part of the idea of the villain and Batman being the same, is that it's not necessarily hard to cross the line between hero and villain, as evidenced in the moral ambiguity of surveilling all of Gotham like Bruce does in the Dark Knight

The best thing about how Catwoman says that White Privileged Men run the city and are bad people is that not only is Batman himself proof that her views aren’t based in truth, but I bet deep down he’d love to throw in her face that he isn’t what she accuses him to be but he has to just turn the other cheek and allow her to say all these terrible things about him that aren’t true because protecting his identity is more important. It demonstrates the strength of his willpower and fortitude.

Totally agree... my biggest issue with the Dark Knight Trilogy is how grounded and realistic it tries to be. Gotham feels like a dull modern city, most of the villains, aside from Joker, are toned down to the point of being boring. Christian Bale's Batman is weak, his over-the-top growly voice, constant monologuing about hope and justice, and endless angst over Rachel come off as borderline parody. Batman is running and driving around the city in flat daytime lighting half the time, there's barely any atmosphere or style to any of it other than the fear toxin scenes in BB. The trilogy plays it way too safe, almost embarrassed by the over-the-top nature of Batman, and ends up feeling flat. Honestly, Heath Ledger’s Joker is basically the only reason I think people hold it in such high reguard.
