📍 It was a difficult start to the Hollywood career of Bette Davis, who has always stood up for herself. Ruth Elizabeth Davis was born on April 5, 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was ten years old when her parents divorced and she was raised in boarding school. She was attracted to the world of dance and the theatre at an early age, began studying theatre and by 1929 was performing on Broadway. She soon caught the attention of Hollywood, and at the age of twenty-two he got his first contract with Universal Studios. After a few unremarkable films, he was dismissed and was already in New York when rival Warner Brothers called him for a screen test. A studio employee waited for her at the train station, but she returned to her bosses unfinished: there was no one among the passengers, she said, who looked like a future movie star. Davis was later praised for her talent rather than her beauty: legend has it that producer Samuel Goldwyn called her a terrible woman when he first saw her in a casting session.

Bette Davis, one of the greatest film actors of our time. She won Oscars for "Dangerous" and "Jezebelle". Miss Davis should have won the Oscar for "Of Human Bondage", "All About Eve". An extraordinary film with 14 Oscar nominations. I'm still sick over the fact that Bette Davis didn't win for Eve. " Now if we consider “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". That would put Miss Davis at 5 Oscars. I haven't even brought up, "Now Voyager", "Mrs Skeffington", " The Little Foxes", "The Letter", "Dark Victory" and there are more film titles to include or consider. There is probably at least another deserved Oscar or two left in her filmography. This hypothetically could put Bette Davis in a stratosphere beyond all others. "She did it the hard way" so that her body of work would be everlasting. Rest in peace Miss Davis. You will never be forgotten. It is with great reverence that I bow my head to the talent of the late great Bette Davis.

I agree with you. I believe Bette Davis should be the actress who received the most oscars. She revolutionised hollywood with realistic portrayals. Her fearless determination to create characters that were believable and accurate, even if it made her look bad was unique at that time. Miss Davis was all about the art of creativity. Her range was extensive, her talent unparalleled. Bette Davis was original, honest, funny, beautiful, brave, passionate, sensitive and without a doubt magnificent.

My favorite actress(the best Hollywood has ever produced). To me, she was unusually beautiful. I have her on auto-record on my DTV list. My favorite Bette movies-Now Voyager and The Letter. In Now Voyager, her movie mom almost stole the movie from her. Doesn't seem possible that a pro like Bette could have that happen to her. Loved their scenes together. In The Letter, she was throughly bad-the scene where she shot her love was fantastic. Did not like the ending. Back in the 40s Hollywood always punished the baddies in movies. I wanted her to get away with it.

@@DM-do5hf Just watched The Great Lie last nite for second time in just a few days. She and Mary Astor absolutely hated each other which made for great movie watching. Both were great in their roles but believe it or not would give edge to Astor. Loved the scene where Bette slapped Mary. She did not pull her punch. Mary was in The Maltese Falcon-another outstanding performance. Like Bette Mary was unusually beautiful.

I love Bette in the film from 1942 "The Man who came to Dinner". Such a great film and it shows how manipulative peoples can be! Those men that owned Hollywood in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s were harsh on women! Of course, Davis was very beautiful. Good thing Bette never let them get her down!

30 years ago I heard a radio interview of a local man who in his younger life worked in HOLLYWOOD. He watched his employer sit next to her in a waiting room both to wait to speak to Louie Mayer. SHE WAS IN A PISS MOOD. The employer just said, "Ms Davis" and nothing else. He knee to give her her space.

Bette Davis was a outstanding Film Star her performances in many movies are unforgettable . My all time favorite film is "Now Voyager" with Paul Henreid and they really had a great chemistry together . Her transformation in that film was incredible from looking like a spinster and then she became this beautiful woman and her wardrobe was so chic elegant . I watch this film many times over ,because it is such a unusual story . To bad she was so destructive and she also aged terrible smoking all her life took its toll too .

I was told for years that Bette lived in a late 20s apartment building on the corner of Crescent Heights and Fountain Avenue in West Hollywood, a beautiful building that I knew quite well from the outside. I have yet to affirm that.

Bette was the foremost actress of the American Cinema. No-one could approach her skills. While she may have had some difficulty in her personal relationships, I don't believe half of what her daughter claimed in her tell-all book. Bette's friends, her former husband and her adopted son universally condemned it. Her son broke off contact with BD for the rest of his life. BD was a problem child who grew to be a neurotic adult.

I don't think classic Hollywood has ever produced anyone with as much talent as Bette. I've seen all her films more times than I can count and trying to pick a favorite is like trying to pick your favorite child. Each film has it's own unique impression and her roles were so diverse as to make it impossible to compare them. Did she have flaws? You bet she did! But it was all a part of the irrepressible package of dynamite that was Bette, and she never let what was going on in her personal life effect her performances. As for her daughter I remember very vividly when her book came out. She thought her mother was near death after Bette's stroke so she jumped the gun so to speak and released the book, doing a string of talk show interviews to promote it. Well, much to everyone's surprise ( especially Bette's daughter)Bette rallied and went on to do many talk show interviews of her own to promote her OWN memoir book which countered a lot of what her daughter said and so Bette had a resurgence in popularity. Bette's book was written with the help of her assistant who she sort of adopted as a substitute daughter ( and left quite a fortune to.) after her daughter's betrayal. Bette's daughter was a fundamentalist Born Again Christian Preacher very extreme in her views and I believe bitter and jealous towards her mother and soon after her mother's book came out, refused to do any other interviews. I don't think the world will ever forget Bette.

Far too much focus on the negatives and the dubious viewpoints of Bette's horrendous daughter. Like most people her life was full of ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies. Her rise from the 'little brown wren' in the early 1930s to her superstar status by the end of the decade is one of the most impressive stories from the golden age of Hollywood. She did it the hard way and left behind a legacy of great performances on film.

What drove her crazy as she matured was Bette’s maniacal possessiveness and supremely manipulative nature. That’s the meaning behind the title of her book ‘’My Mother’s Keeper’’; Bette demanded a lifelong companion and total devotion. She did everything she could to prevent her marrying and tried every way possible to poison the marriage when she did. She and Jeremy Hyman are still married. The occult involvement is a bit much, and she has become a born-again evangelist, but that’s her business.

Bette Davis was in London and I was due to meet her in a restaurant on the Kings Road, (a gay restaurant called The Gigolo). I met with her director, Irvin Rapper (Now Voyager) and he told me she was easy to get along with. Never heard anything bad about the woman. Perhaps they were keeping it secret from me. It turned out I never actually met the woman as she passed away.

I met Bette on her book tour when she was dying of cancer in the mid eighties in Hollywood. She was lovely towards me, as was her assistant. B.D. is known as a crazy "Evangelical Christian" in Virginia. Even among evangelicals she is not well liked.
