📍 She stepped on stage with such natural ease as if her whole life were playful fun. Yet Ginger Rogers had a hard time shedding the shadow of one of the greatest stars of the age, Fred Astaire.
Together, their partner became a brand name, as did Stan and Pan. Their case was different in that Fred Astaire reached the top on his own, while Ginger Rogers had to prove it forever in his shadow. They looked like a dream couple on the movie screen, though they couldn’t stand each other very much in private. Fred used to be a star, lifting Ginger next to him, but never letting her exist without him.

My grandmother worked at the train station (Union Terminal) in Cincinnati OH from the 40s until the late 60s (I think). Ginger Rogers came through often promoting her line a luggage. They became casual friends because my grandmother handled celebrities. Ms Rogers tried to gift her with a set of luggage but she wasn't allowed to accept it. She couldn't ask for autographs or photos either. Ms. Rogers had her people find out where my grandmother lived and delivered a set to her. I'm not sure when this was but I know my grandmother used the luggage on every vacation for the rest of her life. She met dozens of stars. Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Doris Day, Marx Brothers, Abbot & Costello ... even Sea Biscuit and War Admiral. I grew up on the stories. The hundreds of soldiers camped outside the terminal after WWII trying to make connections to get home all over the country. Circus trains comjng through. She had a hard life as a widow with 6 children but she lived a colorful life. She was my hero.

Thank you for your beautiful comment. My grandfather was a great man who did many things that he was criticized for, he did it anyway. He was a tall, very strong man when he met my grandmother. She was a divorced woman with a baby girl. He pursued her for a little over a year. After her divorce, she didn't want anything to do with men. Finally, she agreed to let him take her out for lunch as long as she could bring her daughter. They were married 3 months after that, they had 4 more daughters. My grandmother didn't like living in the city, so they bought a large farm house in the country to raise their children. My Grandfather & Grandmother had been married for 45 years when he had a major heart attack. He asked the doctor what he must do to be able to live until their 50th wedding anniversary. He totally changed the way he did everything. He had 3 more heart attacks, the doctor was amazed that he was still alive, walking around. 1 month after their 50th wedding anniversary, that was celebrated with a large back yard party, put on by friends & family he had another heart attack, he passed on the next day. People may say there are no men like him in todays world. My youngest daughter married a man just like my grandfather.Tall, strong, intelligent, kind hearted with a heap of integrity.

It was indeed a sight to behold Maria, but NEVER is a big ask. I wonder how many dancers there are currently who work together like Fred and Ginger and who are fantastic, but never get the breaks. Musical/dance movies are rarer than the Golden Years of Hollywood but they do occasionally pop up, they are too good to forever be lost as a movie genre.

Hmmm. Well. Let's see here. Fred and Ginger were introduced to one another by George Gershwin while she was beginning on "Girl Crazy" - Fred was hired to give her a dance lesson, in 1930. That led to them dating for from October 1930 until June 1931 when Ginger left for Hollywood, her contract in hand. When Fred arrived in Hollywood, courtesy of the Great Depression's effect on Broadway, he asked for Ginger on "Flying Down to Rio" (according to their mutual friend, Lucille Ball), and RKO had no idea that she could even dance! With that hit, they got a 8-movie contract and fame. They got along fine - they both said it time and again - and it was the STUDIO publicity team that put out that they didn't get along. Why? Who knows. Fred gifted Ginger expensive jewelry by one of Hollywood's greatest jewelers, which doesn't exactly say "I don't like you" in at least 1942, three years after their last movie together (but before "Barkleys", which was a happy accident). He visited her on the sets of her movies frequently, and she decorated his dressing room (at RKO for all of the 1940's even though he wasn't working there) for holidays. All this is in their autobiographies. Ava, Fred's daughter, says Ginger used to come over for dinner at their home occasionally. Hermes Pan, their choreographer and friend, says they all got together a couple times a year for their entire lives for dinners. Keep in mind that the studio systems at the time controlled their stars lives to an appalling degree. They had tremendous power over them, and forced them to live the roles they had decided upon, despite what the actual actors might have wanted. In the end, though, there is this. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are buried a few yards apart in a boring, non-Hollywood cemetery in Chatsworth. All their families are buried there, too. That means that after Phyllis died in 1954, there had to have been a conversation as to where they would all be buried and plots purchased near one another. Fred died in 1987, and Ginger in 1995. So for 33 years, they knew that they would be buried close to one another. That does not say "we don't like each other" - rather, exactly the opposite.

Supposedly Fred's newly-wed wife Phyllis was very jealous of Ginger and therefore publicly their relationship was just cordial...however in Ginger's autobiography Fred comes off much warmer...he sent her a lovely congrats note on her performance in 'Kitty Foyle' starting with a "Hello Cutie" and indicating he was hopefully looking forward to seeing her soon. Fred also gave her a beautiful gold travel watch which was auctioned off at Christie's in London after Ginger's death. So much for them not getting along. I also read Fred was known to stop by and occasionally visit her on set and on one occasion when a reporter noticed Fred roaming around asked Ginger why he was there since "they didn't get along" she firmly replied that that was a lie. (I'm speculating possibly concocted by the studio bosses at RKO to assuage a very jealous Phyllis). For anyone who is interested, Ginger's autobiography is a great read and I highly recommend it.

I read that Fred didn’t want to be a team with anyone because of his sister’s departure. Her departure killed a extremely successful career which left Fred to rebuild his life. According him, he had a rough time starting over again. So, it’s understandable that he was reluctant to be typecast again.

That feathered dress. Despite Astaire's complaints, it's iconic, moves beautifully, and certainly we women always mention it when discussing the duo. "Top Hat" remains my favorite of their movies together. Her performance in "Stage Door" is my favorite of Rogers' non-dancing appearances.

I think they were a lot closer than you suggest. They moved in different circles and didn't particularly socialise but they always dropped in to see each other at the studios if they were passing as the other was filming. Ginger was often quoted in response to people asking why Fred was there saying: "Contrary to popular belief we don't hate each other". And dont forget that it was Fred who requested Ginger for 'Flying Down To Rio'. Plus, in 1942 they attended a New Year's Party where they basically spent the whole evening together talking and dancing, while their respective spouces chatted. They wouldn't have if they weren't friendly. I think it is more they were both perfectionists which meant they argued a bit as that goes with it. I mean, if you want a good example look at Torvill and Dean who are famous for a similar partnership and are known to be best of friends and still are 40 years later. Yet, after a fly on the wall documentary, the British public got a different idea of their relationship because they saw what happened when things go wrong for perfectionists. I am not sure why the studio put out the idea that they hated each other as they spent most of their lives trying to explain this was wrong. Rumour has it that this is why they even agreed to an on screen kiss as to stop these rumours that they hate each other and that was why they had never kissed on screen (at least). The only thing we have to go off backstage first hand is a few clips where they are messing around together and the note and feathers charm which Fred gave Ginger after 'Top Hat' which said: "Dear feathers, I love ya". Hardly sounds like two people who couldn't stand each other. Plus, even though Fred didn't want to have a new partner having lived in his sister's shadow for the previous 27 years leading up to then and despite fearing a permanent partnership, of all the cemeteries in the world, they are buried within 200m of each other (literally). Apparently, Fred helped Ginger have her mother buried near his family plot and so both families are literally within sight of each other and are the only big names in this quiet and secluded cemetery in California. ETA - He never spoke as highly of Ginger lately because some of the others were more technical. It was their chemistry which Fred and Ginger such massive names mixed with still very good dancing. I think the biggest question is what might have they been like if Fred hadn't married Phyllis? Firstly, he used to socialise a lot when in the 1920's but that stopped completely once he was married and rarely attended any events which is so telling that when he did (such as in 1942 - just search "Fred and Ginger 1942" in Google images) acted like a good friend of Ginger's. And it seems from most accounts (especially Ginger's) it was his wife who banned any on screen kisses and she would sit on the side with her knitting keeping a close eye on them. [And only with her but maybe not surprising seeing how her husband specifically requested a beautiful 22 years old movie star who he dated less than a year earlier].

You mention the relationship between Torville and Dean. But as he was gay and she wasn't, I doubt there was anything other than professional. Astaire and Rogers were both married to other people, so maybe they were good friends, if there is such a thing between men and women. Oh, and don't believe this, Ginger apparently broke down and cried with the pressure he imposed, as a perfectionist, about dance routines.

I remember reading somewhere, that he had dated her years before and when they were looking for somebody he suggested her. This was in a biog about his life. But, he was a perfectionist who gave her hell getting each move more than 100 percent right. He drove her in one film, into the night, rehearsing one number until the dance floor was covered in blood from her feet, and the shoes she was wearing. She soldiered on in agony and you might imagine he'd notice her pain but he seemingly didn't. Or just wanted the perfect take.

PS: Yes, Phyllis used to be there when they filmed various films, I believe. However, not necessarily to keep tabs on Fred. More possible was that he was simply embarrassed in front of her when he had to dance closely. Seems they were very happy and when you are, you trust. Yes, in that biog I read they mentioned that. But they dismissed stories about any other relationship but professional. He was very disciplined.

HUGE Astaire fan, always wary when people want to suggest they hated each other, simply because they didn't hang out together. Often overlooked is how busy Ginger was DURING these Astaire films. Her noted acting work was not done just before/after the Astaire films, but throughout them. Fred worked on each Rogers film, one at a time. Ginger had other films going all the time. IMDB lists 20 films Ginger did from her first RKO Astaire film to the last one a few years later. The routine was Astaire co-hort Hermes Pan would create and rehearse the Ginger parts with Fred, then Ginger would come in at he end and be quickly taught the steps. She'd film her scenes, then run off to another picture. Not much time to hang out and laugh. Both had huge respect for each other though as hard workers, something each valued in a co-worker, and not always common. I think their love for each other grew in later years when they could look back and realize how wonderfully what they created turned out. Two different people who worked together, handled disagreements in a professional way, and created timeless magic.

Fred explicitly states in his autobiography that his wife, Phyllis, didn't restrict Fred from kissing Ginger in his films. Fred thought kissing to show romance was a cheap gimmick and he didn't want to stoop to that level. He preferred to showcase falling in love and being in love through dance, which in truth is much more effective in his films than a kiss was. Anyway, Phyllis even came to the watch the reels of their first on-screen kiss in "Carefree", and based on how he quotes his wife and retells it, it sounded like Phyllis was amused, rather than jealous. It's true that Fred withholds opinions of many of his costars, including Ginger, who is really hardly mentioned in his book, but he was also a private person and never wanted to actually hurt others' feelings and have it reflect poorly on him. They really did respect each other, even if at times they didn't get along as people. Whatever disagreements they had about each other, it never got in the way of their art, and I agree with this video that it shows a testament to their consummate professionalism.

I think that this video downplays Ginger's dancing ability and plays up any conflict between Fred and Ginger. God only knows what was fact or fiction back in those days, with the Hedda Hopper's of the world, making up lies about everyone. Ginger was absolutely stunning and her wardrobe was to die for.

I think Fred was wise, he didnt marry another actor, or actress, so there was no conflict. Ginger, who I love, I feel went into show business very young and was probably scared and insecure, marrying at 17 yrs. She picked men in show business mainly, one marine. As far as their dance routines are concerned...Ginger had natural talent and abilities but she was not a 'trained' dancer and was a little wobbly in the beginning. It took a bit more effort on the part of Fred and Hermes Pan but they worked with her and she worked very hard and never complained. She was a real pro and a wonderful actress.

One more thing...Hermes Pan when interviewed after Fred's death mentioned how insecure Fred was to the point of not wanting to view the previous day's filming or rushes as he referred to them...he would ask Pan to take a look and Pan would day "Fred you look great". He apparently couldn't understand Fred's insecurities in light of his fame and popularity.

Astaire danced with a number of Hollywood stars besides Rogers. Charise, Hayworth, Garland and others were teamed with Astaire to great success. Rogers had a number of popular films without dancing and without Astaire. They were the ultimate partnership on film because they were the ultimate professionals. They didn't need to be more than cooperative.

It is interesting to note a couple of things here. Hermes Pan would work with Astaire, dancing the female role as they choreographed together. Pan would then teach the finished choreography to Ginger, dancing the male role. Only at that point would Fred and Ginger dance together, with Pan advising. So the dynamic of the 'Fred and Ginger' couple wasn't that of equals. She definitely did not do everything that Fred did at all. Hermes Pan is a fascinating figure in Hollywood at the time. A huge talent, and friends with many stars, he worked with Fred on 17 of his 31 films and many others in his own right. Ginger was also fit in a way that a lot of Fred's other dancing partners were not. She was athletic. I consider that the lean athleticism Ginger had at the time has helped the continuation of the legendary partnership. David Niven mentions in his books that Ginger could have been a tennis professional. When it comes to being pigeonholed in Hollywood, it is completely logical that Fred should have fought against being part of a professional partnership. It should be noted that Fred was hugely successful dancing with his sister Adele. However, my grandparents (who saw them on stage) considered that Adele was the better of the two dancers. Their partnership finished when Adele married Lord Charles Cavendish and retired from show business. Ginger's politics and the relationship with her mother (who acted as her agent) might not have encouraged friendship off screen with the family man Fred.

Hermes taught Ginger the dance moves because he was a better teacher than Fred was, and Ginger was usually off doing another - or three - movies. She was super busy but when she started the movie, she was all in. Hermes was just as talented as Fred, but in different ways, and was utterly amazing. Add in Hal Borne, a genius piano player, and this quartet made history. Repeatedly and regularly! Fred and Hermes trained Ginger for 19 years, and you can see the progression of her dance skills if you watch the dances in order. P.S. I WISH we had video of Adele dancing!

I remember seeing an interview with Ginger Rogers where she said she took umbrage at those critics who called her films with Fred, Fred Astaire musicals, not Fred and Ginger films. Then there is the saying "Ginger did everything Fred did, but backwards and in high heels". In answer to Ginger, that may partly be due to the fact that while she virtually abandoned musical films to pursue a dramatic career after her partnership with Fred, he continued to make musicals for nearly two decades more, creating an body-of-work of which his films with Ginger were a very important a part of, but still only a part of, while Ginger's dramatic films were outside the musical genre and are not part of a cohesive body-of-work. As to that other saying, it's simply not true. Yes, when dancing together she did what he did backwards, but in their movies together he did much more. When Fred first came to RKO the studio assigned young dancer to work with him, with the unlikely name of Hermes Pan. If you look at the credits of most of Fred's musical films as well as his later TV specials Hermes Pan is listed as either dance director or later choreographer. It's documented in many places, including Fred's autobiography, how they worked together. Several months before filming started Fred and Hermes would get together at the studio and work out the dance steps. Hermes would dance the female part and they created the full dance numbers together. Then, a week or two before filming started, Ginger (or his later female co-stars) came in and Hermes would teach her the steps. While Fred was co-creator of the dances (for which he never took screen credit), Ginger had no part in the creative process. It should also be noted that in most Fred/Ginger films Fred sang about three songs, while Ginger had at best maybe one song or just a duet with Fred, in some she didn't even have a vocal solo. Even in dancing he almost always had solo dance numbers in the films, while she did so rarely. I do not mean to disparage Ginger by pointing out that that her contribution to their films was not as great as Fred's. As a previous comment noted, she made about ten films without Fred during the period of their screen partnership, while he made only one without her in that period. Ginger was a wonderful performer, a superb dancer and fine actress and they had great onscreen chemistry that was never duplicated by any of his subsequent dance partners, even Cyd Charisse, who was arguably even a better dancer than Ginger. Arlene Croce's famous comment about Fred and Ginger may be truer. He gave her class, she gave him sex appeal. Indeed, it could be argued that as great as Fred was, he might not have achieved the iconic status he did without the underpinning of the Fred/Ginger partnership! It is true they dated briefly in New York when they were both stage stars. Fred in his autobiography states something to the effect he was turned off by Ginger's Mama Rose-like overbearing stage mother. He was also a decade older than her, which means when they dated she was barely passed her teens. But, if in real life if they didn't have the chemistry that just fills up the screen in their films, they did respect each other and remained friends. If you haven't yet guessed, Fred Astaire is my favorite entertainer of all-time. So don't take the gibberish in this video at face value, read the books about or by them, especially Fred and Gingers autobiographies to get a more authentic picture.

I might add that I've read Hermes Pan stated in his autobiography that in 1939 when Ginger told RKO executives that she didn't want to do anymore musicals...thus ending their psrtnership (till.1949)...that Fred was very..very upset regarding the future trajectory of his career. As we all know...he went on to sprinkle his magic with a variety of beautiful actresses/dancers.

I always wonder what Fred Astaire (or Gene Kelly) would think of the great talent that Derek Hough possesses, and how they would compare his dancing technique (which is impeccable) to their own styles. I believe that if ANYONE should inherit the title that Mr. Astaire, at one-time, "owned" as "the world's greatest dancer", it should be Derek. He is absolutely AMAZING! And this is coming from someone who grew up on Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly movies and performances!

My little boy had no filter. We were visiting Bob, the elderly bus driver who picked him and his brother and sister in rural Montana. Bob was a world war II pilot and his son had a long and distinguished naval flying career. Among Bob' collection was a piece of moon rock given to his son for saving the Venus probe and an autographed photo of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. My son asked directly if he could have the photo after Bob dies in a few years.

No she didn't! It's one of the most unfair quotes about anyone. She was honest enough to admit that if she wore a long enough dress she would fake the step. Her steps were nowhere near as crisp, neat or expertly executed as his. She never learnt how to spot when spinning and couldn't do a controlled spin. She was " effective" as Fred himself said, but not one tenth the dancer be was.

Astaire died before Rogers. Rogers asked his most recent wife for permission to have some of his work made available as (I think) a legacy of old Hollywood, but the widow refused. I don't recall details beyond that.

Contrary to belief Ginger was NOT a diabetic! If you take the trouble to read her autobiography or watch the numerous television interviews both she and her screen partners gave over the years there is absolutely NO mention of it. Furthermore she made a total of 73 movies in a film career spanning 35 years and was a superb athlete, excelling in tennis, swimming, golf, sailing etc etc., and she loved ice cream. Do you think that film studios would entertain anyone who was basically "a risk". I know of people who suffer from type 1 diabetes and when I relate this falsehood to them they laugh in disbelief. My theory is that this is a classic "chinese whisper", evidently the root vegetable GINGER is good for the treatment of diabetes,,, enough said.

It is a pity that they had to spend most of their lives explaining that what the studios had said was wrong. From quotes over the years, that every time they were seen at an event chatting or dancing together or when one would drop into see the other at a studio if the other was passing or filming nearby, they had to explain why they were being so friendly and civil to one another. I am merely speculating but I do wonder if they would have been closer if Fred hadn't married Phyllis. If you look at Fred's life during the 1920's he was always socialising. But then after he married Phyllis he didn't really go out and socialise that much. While at the studio, it is rumoured (mainly from Ginger) that it was Phyllis who insisted that they weren't allowed to have any on screen kisses and she would sit on the side with her knitting watching them like a hawk. I am not too surprised giving the timing, but it does make me wonder would they have been closer and spent more time socialising had she not been there. On the odd occasion when they did attend the same event as each other, such a New Year's Party in 1942, they spent the whole even chatting and dancing together.

The two were just professional comrades at best. Astaire was married (a couple of times) before they ever met and they were both married before they made a picture together. Fred Astaire said he loved to DANCE with Ginger Rogers, but the studios hated them to dance together because she was taller in flat shoes than he was in lifts. All their fans saw Rogers was NEARLY as graceful as Astaire, and probably his most graceful dancing partner. I personally would have always liked to see Mitsi Gaynor paired with Fred Astaire, but he was really too old by the mid '50's to co-star with her in full-blown top-drawer Hollywood musicals with the price tags they had attained. Elvis musicals were the only break-even ones.

You are absolutely wrong regarding Fred's ... "marriages"??? I've read Fred"s autobiography....his first marriage was to Phyllis Potter (who was a divorcee who died from lung cancer in 1954). They had two children. He remained a widower until 1981 when he married the famous jockey Robin Smith.
