So true, and it is necessary to emphasize this. (Yet I find it ironic that, in a lesson on the importance of knowing background, one would say that Caesarea Philippi is "outside of the Holy Land," for it is a part of the tribal allotment of Manasseh.)

Moreover, the area of Caesarea Philippi was later part of the Davidic kingdom. This Bible background to the declaration of Jesus the son of David as king of Israel should not be ignored, providing a pretext to read into the events at Caesarea Philippi some covert assertion of universal lordship in order to universalize Jesus’ mission outside its proper Israelite context. To the contrary, to me context makes Jesus' reclamation of the Holy Land in His restoration as its Davidic king more likely.

It is enriching to study and know the historical and religious background of the biblical text, however the Bible stands on its own without requiring the background information you mentioned. This additional information was not easily accessible in centuries past, yet the Holy Spirit still spoke to His people and mediated the book's understanding. What you are really saying at the end of the day is that only those with a more scholarly approach can understand the Bible's meanings and that is not at all accurate. Even the example you gave speaks in and of itself and brings forth a full confession of faith that Jesus is Lord. The background undoubtedly adds richness, but it is not essential to understanding the rumors concerning Jesus and the ensuing confession of faith. Historical hermeneutics is not always essential to understanding a text. Hermeneutical methods can be applied without an appeal to historicity. The Bible is God's textbook and it was meant to be accessible to all categories of people, both scholarly and non-scholarly throughout the centuries. It is not meant only for an intellectual elite of sorts who are the sole discoverers of God's truth. As a reference point, I have postgraduate degrees, and I specialize in hermeneutics.

If pagans predate Christianity... then why is it not possible that they could have believed in something they believed with their whole hearts? Who is someone to judge that?

The example given (Mark 8) leads to a conclusion that is made explicit multiple times throughout the New Testament, a conclusion, in fact, that Mark literarily seems to want to hold off on until placing the proper confession in the proper place at the proper time by the proper mouth: cross-side in the mouth of the centurion just after Jesus' death. Background, it seems, aided your pretext that Jesus is the Son of God, while Mark doesn't want to reveal it until the point that we least expect it..

Shouldn't background be just that--background to a piece of literature with its own interior integrity? Perhaps, e.g., Mark 8 is more of a statement about the people than the Christ. He takes them to Caesarea Philippi so as to suggest that the various opinions about him are part and parcel of the socioreligious malaise. Peter's ensuing insight from heaven and thrust into hell has all the more significance as such--just another part of the parcel: right man+wrong mission=wrong man.
