We try to leave jargon out of our videos, but if you want to learn more about this topic, here are some handy keywords to get your googling started:
Biodiversity - the variety of genes, species, and ecosystems
Conservation - ethical use and protection of valuable natural resources (e.g. trees, minerals, wildlife, water)
Ecosystem - a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Ecosystem services - benefits people obtain from ecosystems (four categories: supporting, provisioning, regulating, and cultural)
Richness - the number of species in an ecological community, landscape, or region
Pollinators - animals that help plants reproduce by moving pollen from male flowers to female flowers
Pollution - the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment (e.g. chemicals, particles, noise, heat, light)

I can personally attest to raising goats and cattle together works well as the goats prefer leafy greens like weeds that cattle often won't eat, and that allows the grass that the cattle do eat to grow better cause they aren't shaded out by weeds.

I like how you guys still reply to comments despite hitting the one million subscribers mark. Most channels lose that sense of "direct connection" since the community gets so large it turns into a swarm of strangers, and there are so many comments that even if the creator comments, it gets buried. I wonder if there's some sort of ecological metaphor in there somewhere? Like in your video about the relationship between scarcity and diversity both in economics and ecology?

I might have one: if there are too many species or biodiversity some might get buried into certain classes. And eventually just a large group where it takes longer to find a certain species from a category.

My understanding from this is that biodiversity makes a much stronger ecosystem, but it does _not_ help a singular product. For instance, if you're trying to grow apples, having diverse trees among your apple grove won't make the apple trees also flourish more than they would as a grove of pure apple trees. A diverse set of insects will pollinate better (as mentioned), but that makes each apple tree grow more fruit rather than growing more apple trees. *So biodiversity is not better for any one species because they are still competing with each other.* They are just coexisting with other species who compete for other things.

Wouldn't more timber for sell mean less cost per timber which would reduce the total cost, not just add up? I don't know much about economics so kinda help me here...
@EagleDarkX
@EagleDarkX 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, technically, but the total income would still rise, because the rate a piece of lumber would drop by would be compensated by the fact that you have more wood. Like how selling one marble for $2,- gets you less than selling two for $1,50 each.
@TraceurRijeka
@TraceurRijeka 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I get that. But since we don't know the decrease of price I can make a statement as follows: 1) You have 1000 cubic meters of timber and you sell each for 2000$. For that deal you'll end up with 2,000,000$. 2) You have 1350 (35% increase) cubic meters of timber and you sell each for 1450$ (27.5% decrease). You now ended up with "only" 1,957,500$. Either that or you'll be in a surplus
@dr.sbrule5817
@dr.sbrule5817 7 жыл бұрын
I assume the decrease in the value of the wood would be pretty small relative to the % increase in amount of wood. Id be very surprised if selling more wood would make you less money... Imagine a trade deal where you offered more and got offered less in return, it just doesn't happen.
@EagleDarkX
@EagleDarkX 7 жыл бұрын
Prince McKok They would never let you pay less for more. Besides, keep in mind that the price isn't just decided by what you produce, but also what the rest of the world produces. If the rest of the world produces more, and you don't, your prices will drop as well. You need to keep up, that's competition. If you were the only one to make more wood, the prices wouldn't vary much (unless you have a monopoly, but then you decide the prices yourself anyway.)

If the businesses would profit from growing diverse amount of trees: it would already be done. It is well known that farms cooperate with bee farms for strategic placement of these mildly complementary products.
@PatriPastry
@PatriPastry 7 жыл бұрын
I think the distinction they made with them calling this a "recent study" means that this wasn't exactly mass knowledge previously, nor is it now. I personally suspect within 2 decades more and more tree farms will begin using tree diversity, assuming this study is correct.
@murrayvonmises
@murrayvonmises 7 жыл бұрын
Patrickmen11 Not everywhere, some tree farms rely on private property where it is necessary to replant and regrow the trees(Canada etc.). Others buy licenses to cut down trees, Amazona. When the property is not owned there is no incentive to replant. As to this recent study, it is well known that biodiversity is better for eco-systems. The issue with planting lots of different trees on farms is how they fit in these cars and the quality of the wood. Wood cutter use blades and vehicles for a specific size, and trees are rarely left to fully grow before cut. If you would have to mix all these different sorts of trees into a vehicle it would potentially fill up cart fast as well cause issues with the cutting of them. - and one more thing, manufactures often only want 1 sort of tree, and therefor this would lead to nothing but more obstacles for the vehicles cutting down these trees. If you think these ideas are so smart how come you don't engage in the market. You could sell trees 5% cheaper and make more 30% profits according to his paper -- which is so low iq and pathetic as I've proven above, well at least the conclusion formulated in this movie.

An interesting thought is whether or not logging companies care to lose the specialization of cutting down a certain kind of tree. Sure, the total value of the forest is greater with biodiversity, but perhaps it's more economical for the company if there were only one kind of tree and therefore only one method to cut down that kind of tree. I, of course, think biodiversity is great, but it's always fun to look from different perspectives.

Hi, I'm very interested about agriculture and about finding a new way to respect nature while harvesting it. In few years, we will be 3 billions more people, whereas we're absolutely unable to feed the actual population. So we have to do something! I am in a ingineer school in France, I really want to be part of this movement. So I'd like to know from your knowledges (anyone is invited to answer) what I could do, maybe there is an university who learn stuff about it ? I am a bit worried about my studies, I don't know what to do in life but I think more and more about working in searchs to find a new way of living on Earth!

I know of similar plots in Iowa where biomass is measured from single up to 16 species per plot. The 30% increase in biomass is on par with their research, for these very same reasons.

If it was just a publication in just any journal, I'd agree with you. But the journal Science is not just any journal. It is one of the big ones that professors are constantly competing to publish in, and many doctoral students will never manage to grace the pages of.

i think we shud get rid of the economy becuz it doesnt really do much, but since i think biodiversity is important maybe we should just let it be. no reason to kill off another species just cuz its not very important

I would think it common sense that it is in our best interest to preserve as much nature as possible. I mean.. of course that's going to be a more productive route right?

The deathless face of the unborn mind. Not necessarily, certain forms of conservation are very wasteful of time/resources. Pandas, for example, are pretty useless for their ecosystems but we dump hundreds of millions into helping them. Where as bees in North America are facing massive threats and relatively little goes to helping them.

I want to care about bee life but as someone with sekosphobia the phobia of bees wasps and hornets I find it really hard to not enjoy news about lower bee populations My phobia is dreadful it ruins summer late spring and early autumn (no wonder i like October so much) it's so bad I can barely go outside by myself in summer unless I'm wearing long sleeves and trousers-which is so hot. I often mistake hover flys as wasps in my panic as well I'll also add twenty minutes on to a walk just because I saw a few bees in a particular location the day before. All the running and quick get ups from tables burns a lot of calories so it's not all a loss.

I guess this is some new kind of ecology that wasn't yet thaught in biology class 10 years ago. I learned that healthy eco-systems have low bio-diversitiy. If you want bio-diversity, find a swamp or polluted lake.
