Contrary to popular belief soil is NOT required for plants to grow. If you provide certain nutrients (dissolved in water), plants can grow and thrive on ANY substrate. So, specially designed farms can grow excellent produce without a single gram of soil.
@AlexBooster8 жыл бұрын
***** Nope. That would only be expensive on an open field farm. (and frankly, there's no need for that there because it does have soil) But on a specially designed farm (with no soil) it will be very efficient i.e. far less expensive. Plus, only a tiny amount of water and nutrients will need to be used (most of it will be constantly recycled). We will first introduce this type of farming in twitter.com/StarCityProject where will produce all crops *within* the city's territory (underground).
@AlexBooster8 жыл бұрын
I have to correct myself a bit: There are actually commercial greenhouse plantations today where plants are grown without any soil and all nutrients are supplied dissolved in water. This is known as Hydroponics.
@hinkwanwong93158 жыл бұрын
Yes. but hydroponics uses more water, a more valuable resource than soil surely.
@AlexBooster8 жыл бұрын
Hin Kwan Wong Wrong! Hydroponics only uses a *tiny* fraction of water and a tiny fraction of other nutrients as compared to traditional agriculture. Most of the water and nutrients gets recirculated so that it only uses the amount of water and nutrients that the plants actually take in. That's a tiny fraction compared to wasteful traditional agriculture.
@AlexBooster8 жыл бұрын
***** Sure, because of the initial investments required hydroponics is mostly suitable for developed countries. This certainly isn't suitable for small farmers in developing countries. That's true. But in developed countries even relatively small farmers can afford it. Plus, this investment is gonna pay off fairly quickly.

What one of the most exciting ideas I've seen fairly recently is vertical farming. Basically you take a bunch of shelves and turn them into customized flower pots (excuse the oversimplification) and grow crops vertically instead of over a vast area of land. It's also supposed to save water and energy in the process. I urge anyone interested in renewable resources to check it out.

What some farmers are doing are just replenishing the soil of their farms artificially rather than retaining the soil quality they already have.
@qhack8 жыл бұрын
The fact that you somehow think artificially maintained soil is substandard to natural soil... You do realize that the act of planting a crop is itself not natural. Using fertilizer to replenish what a crop removes from the soil isn't a problem. Yes, over fertilizing does lead to environmental issues, but to a farmer, it's un-economical to do so, so this also isn't a huge problem.
@ericmeans55988 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it is not as efficient as you think for example corn(one of the most heavily grown crops in america) takes 2 calories of the petroleum(to make the fertilizer) to 1 calorie of corn
@qhack8 жыл бұрын
[citation needed]
@bcubed728 жыл бұрын
+1 on "citation needed." AFAIK, the entire "seed-to-booze" process is (marginally) energy-positive, which means that the "seed-to-corn" process is even more energy positive, as there are losses at every step. (There is exactly one study I'm aware of that says EtOH production is energy negative--by Prof Pimental--and his co-authors actually pulled out of the study when it became apparent there were serious issues re: not counting the caloric value of distiller's grain and other by-products.)

Maybe do rows of different plants like for example:you could add a row of trees to hold the earth like you said and then a row of crops with water between them.This could maybe also fix the "too much fertilization" problem because since there are trees it could suck some nutrients and could leave some leftover nutrients that are enough for the crops to survive. And another is that since you are planting trees you could also farm fruits like apples. I hope this is helpful information. UwU

(And) if you were to argue that the food supply won't be able to keep up with the population growth then that is wrong as long as we generate enough food for 11 billion people we are good (since we are having less and less babies until the max "normal" amount is 2 maybe with the occasional 3 to counter deaths ((this is one way humans could be wiped out)))

Speaking as someone who has actually spend some time in the silt that builds up behind dams, that sh*t is dangerous. As a farmer we strive to keep our land as economically viable as possible while or keeping it environmentally stable. We keep our land green near all year long planting rye grass, clover, radishes; and a mixture of grasses with our main crop to keep erosion and loss of soil microbes and nutrients at a minimum. Erosion itself costs us far more than the crops are worth. We are changing from the older ways of straight ripping the soil till its dust and so is a bunch of other farmers. We're striving towards innovation vs being constantly attacked that were bad for the environment when it's the urban sprawl and city politics and opinions thats really killing our opportunity to develop new ways to better protect the environment and grow more productively the crops that feed the world. Could we just attempt to reclaim soil from river beds and general waterways by digging it out and replacing?

I'm currently in my first year of studying to have my own farm one day. The solutions shown in the video are taught to us, because it's a real problem and we save money by keeping our soil rich. Erosion means less nutrients, which means we need to buy them. The more you go over a field with your tractor, the more fuel you burn and the more you need to buy. Anyone telling you these methods aren't financially viable are either uneducated in the field or out of touch with new information. Sadly, farm owners don't make a lot of money so changing your equipment or getting educated on new technologies can be very difficult for people who have owned farms for decades, even centuries. Hopefully, governments will start programs to help educate and promote anti erosion methods so we can keep our soil rich and healthy!

By the way, organic farming needs more land and increases erosion due to less non-plough tillage.

There are some old style farming techniques focused on soil retention. Amish/Mennonites use them.
