I've lived in Uganda for over two years now. It is only not cheap because of the over charging and scamming that you will endure until you get your bearings. There is ALOT of backwardness that you will be solicited to adopt or assimulate into, resistance is essential for your own sanity. Staying focused on your goals and brushing off the constant begging will see your ideas and projects come to fruition. No one that is local is going to take in mind or care that you're a foreigner trying to survive in a foreign land with zero support from government or family. The fact that you have earned your money may be an abstract concept to many. The real entitlement is that of the Africans who think they are entitled to your hard earned money as if it was a gift to you in America. They will blame the media for the ignorance and lack understanding to see you as a person rather than an opportunity. Africa is not for everyone, especially if you have no survival skills.

@worldwide7657 It's cool here in Gambia. I worked on myself before moving to the continent. I live within my means, I'm not trying to save Africa, I embrace the culture, I don't feel the need to "fit in" or be accepted by the locals, and I don't try to control things that I can't (i.e poor infrastructure, lack of knowledge of Africans in the diaspora, limited access to quality goods, being taken an advantage of once locals hear my accent, overcharged for second hand goods, pervasive corruption, cultural norms, political and religious ideologies, etc.). If you can manage to develop your own way of handling some of these inevitable challenges, then living in Gambia will be fine.

I’m only interested in going where I am wanted and appreciated. Being price gouged because you think I’m rich is offensive and counterproductive. If your people don’t know my history that puts me at a double disadvantage and makes it harder for me to navigate and interact with people. Proper education has to be a priority before real cooperation and understanding can be achieved.

Hollered at my South African folks and him and the folks damn near said it at the same time. Once that African woman heard my American accent, she thought of money. It's not only in Africa we Americans are looked at this way. Not all Africans here treat me that way, though. Only a few. Most are hella cool.

I'm an ADOS Man here in America with our 250 years of family lineage. ADOS are Americans ,and not Africans, culturally , expressly and institutionally. As a result, i believe some ADOS/Black Americans may come to see and understand themselves through their experience in Africa, and return HOME to America. ADOS/Black Americans are being sold the dream, but are left on their own to find out the realities. This, 'Dream of the Motherland", partly due the idealism of Pan Africanism that is sold to ADOS over the years when Africa was more foreign. Yet, if ADOS/Black Americans were moving to say Asia or Europe, they would be more honest about those realities that they are headed into before going.

I like that you spoke the truth. I’ve been with my husband to the continent three times and I’ve visited several countries some twice. I believe African-Americans should redeem the blood and sweat of their ancestors on this soil in the United States so that we can fix ourselves. I’m praying that all the African countries will never allow colonization to continue to destroy some of their countries. As an African-American, I am the result of horrific, colonization and slavery. I would really hate to see the continent that I see as my “mother continent” not become healed, because of greedy hand exchanges. Bottom line: stay put and fix home first.

Our situation in America is not going to get fixed. I can't say that I have any faith that Africa can be fixed either. As time goes on, we are falling further behind. Our condition in America is a disaster in every meaningful measure. And frankly, it's probably impossible to fix our minds when we are still living underneath the foot of our oppressor. I'm living in Ghana now and I still don't know if I can get rid of the trauma of America, but I'm not experiencing it every second of everyday like in America. The world here is a reflection of me.

African Americans are romanticizimg Africa. They are also looking for their place. There is a lack of unity amongst the African Americans in the US. Unity and self love would resolve so many problems. African Americans put their people last unlike other communications. Many Africans Americans are moving to Portugal, which is the first country to traffic millions of slaves to the Americas. They have nothing to offer our people. Unfortunately, our people still have a lot to learn. You are so right.

I'm making sure I have enough money saved and my finances are sufficient, I'm researching cost of living and possible job opportunities, I'm researching health care, I'm looking at securing housing before I move, I'm researching African drivers licenses, petro gasoline prices and purchasing a vehicle, I'm looking at different African countries' laws, social, political and economic climates, I'm researching citizenship, I'm researching buisness and real-estate opportunities, I'm researching land ownership, I'm doing research on the different cultures, customs and languages I must learn how to speak. I believe that most African Americans who are leaving the continent did not research and properly plan financially in the first place.

@Ab O I'm first class all day every day. I even fly first class because I can. I'm retired military, and I currently work for the U.S. government helping my fellow veterans and looking at retirement for the second time. I also own several rental properties. Through 24 years of military service, I've traveled to several European, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries. I've vacationed in nothing but Carribean and African nations, like Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Madagascar, just to name a few. I've noticed for a long time now that no matter where black people are on this planet, and regardless of our status in life, all other groups of people collectively have a negative implicit bias towards black people and treat black people with disdainful hatred, contempt and discrimination. Collectively, black people have never done anything wrong to these other groups of people to make them treat us this way. When I visit Africa, I feel relaxed and truly free as a black human being. I don't have the psychological burden of being reminded of my ancestors' trauma or worrying about the cops being called on me and getting brutilized or murdered or being racially discriminated against just for being African American. This is what happens to black people in America on a daily basis. So I'm taking my money, my business sense, my skills and talents, and my knowledge too Africa. More importantly, it feels good knowing that I'm moving to Mama Africa, the homeland of my enslaved African ancestors. I stand on their shoulders. If it wasn't for their strength, struggle, and sacrifices surviving the worst atrocities and all types of brutality and hardship, no African American would be alive today.

less than 10% of all African-Americans that visit Africa are willing to make it long term and from that number maybe 2% actually do stay (long term). So why does it seem caucasians have a better retention rate in Africa? Are they better prepared or is their experiences give them nostalgic colonially vibes which encourages them to stay.

The best place we Black Americans can go on the African continent is Liberia. We can go there, apologize for what our ancestors done to them, work with the indigenous people of the land and prioritize their needs , and make liberia an economic powerhouse. Y'all know we can do if we decide . One thing i love about being black American is the family feel no matter where you live in the country. Two black guys will be fist fighting and still refer to each other as bro while cursing each other out and fighting one another.....it's crazy but shows there's still love and respect. I think it's a lot deeper than that sis. Black Americans are not used to the scamming that goes on in Africa. And black Americans are not used to not having certain amenities at their disposal. Call it spoil if you may, but it's about culture. A lot of black Americans also thought that they would be able to live comfortably in Africa just because they go to the continent with a pocket full of money, only to realize that with the scamming and overpricing, their money didn't or will not last long. I noticed that a lot of Caribs are also returning to their countries. As for the entitlement, Africans come to the US with the same attitude, as they think they should be entitled to the same civil rights as black Americans. So perhaps that's why some Americans have an entitled attitude when they go to the continent. As an American, I don't have expectations of Africa. I would have to spend time there. I have visited the continent twice and I enjoyed it. But I don't think I would ever want to live there.

As a Foundational Blackman, 1st and foremost, I'm not interested in moving to Africa, however, visiting, I can tolerate! The Foundational Black American has our own culture. Hence, the culture of black in America has been dissected by so many non-grassroots or FBA"s. The Foundational Black Americans are a special people with a unique history incomprehensible to immigrants! Those that do come to America or see excerpts on the internet on Foundational Black people are mostly insulting! I'm tired of those dictating my historical saga with manipulation benefiting themselves, and using FBAs as catalysts! That said; The damage that has been done to my ancestors is so diabolical, atrocious, and unforgiving. Pay us reparations 16 trillion and counting! We do not need to go on the African continent begging that's INSANITY!! What we have already been through as a people, no one gets to dictate otherwise!!! The USA owes us the Foundational Black reparations, that include Africa! I can spend 20 unuseful minutes explaining why and how, ergo, that subject is for another time. Until then, I'll remain in the struggle of Blackness, for we are a special people a unique people!

I think African Americans should read about the Liberian experience. It takes concessions, adaptation, and time to fit into African societies. With their Western culture, one should expect some clash with local cultures. But that's ok It just takes some understanding and subtlness to make the fold. Whether you come as a tourist, an investor, an entrepreneur, an ICT expert, a consultant, or a trainer in various fields, a land developer etc, ...I still believe that, on average, you can live a better life with less in Africa.

My back to Africa movement has been in the works for several years. If you are coming to the continent, you must have several income streams. Don't expect to get a job unless you speak one of the dominant languages fluently or at least be able to navigate (Mo le so ede Yoruba die), also you should have a money degree (science, engineering, computer science, business (program management), international law, medicine). Be business minded, there are a lot of opportunities but there are also a lot of people who will steer you in the wrong direction. You must appreciate the culture, learn the culture, be respectful, open-minded, bring your value, be discerning, and business acumen.

What I always recommend is for the diaspora to first study the region they intend to relocate to. Southern Afrika can offer a homely environment for many coming from the US or even Europe… adjusting down there wouldn’t be as stressful as other parts of the continent… however lo and behold they always prefer West Afrika, test West Afrikans themselves are fleeing … Many won’t even consider the Kingdom of Eswatini due to western propaganda- yet it’s one country that has a lot to offer.

I have an idea for how Uganda can draw middle income black Americans to Uganda. Create a new visa or maybe dual citizenship that would allow black Americans with an income higher than 60k Or combined income of over 90k to come to Uganda with conditions to follow the rules of Uganda and the black Americans would also need to teach the Ugandans specialized education like computer engineering and infrastructure design. Maybe a Ugandan family could sponsor the black American. Uganda could require Black Americans would be required to learn the most popular Ugandan language. I’m thinking out loud and will make more comments on this topic later….
