Maybe the Silph Chief is'nt the president, but rather a lead scientist, who was originally be the holder of the master ball and an encounter, before you fight Giovanni.

the modified blaine was part of the silph-rocket plan, they wanted to create mew, screwed it up as we know, and then wanted to capture mewtwo with the master ball... giovanni realized silph finally made the ball, and took hostage silph chief. then, with giovanni defeated, our “blaine” didnt have any other obstacles to get mewtwo, just the little fella who disbanded the rockets. that’s why he challenges you and when you defeat him he actually let go the master ball. it was too forced the fact, giving you the master ball anyway...

Personal Headcannon of mine regarding Blaine. He WAS in the military,and pretty high up too. But he retired and took up being a gym leader as a hobby. Hard to tell what branch he was, but I'm personally going with either Army or Marine.

The early Pokémon Game manual Blaine looks like he’s younger like in his 40s with brown hair and a solider like LT Surge. The anime makes him look like an old hippie. Pokémon Red & Green, Blue, Yellow he’s a scientist.

I came here after reading some of the manga. In one chapter, they showed Blaine looking similar to his old design with fake hair and different clothes, and then when he got to his lab, he put on his glasses, lab coat, and fake mustache. At first, I thought maybe this was referencing the anime appearance he had possibly, but now I know that this design dates further back than the anime, and the writer + artist were referencing that. I thought it was neat they incorporated both looks into the story. Interestingly, poking further into this, I saw some concept art for Blaine in LGPE, and the art depicts a similar concept to the manga, in which Blaine is able to wear and take off fake hair/mustaches to change between appearances that resemble his new and current design. So that's kind of neat that the old design carries on further, even years past it's initial conceptualization and lack of use in the original games.

Why is Brock's hair red here? Erika's hair is longer too there's a lot more to her design that's been talked about online. She may have been a ghost type gym leader. Because of her beta outfit. Why is Sabrina wearing a green outfit here? Then there's that war Lt. Surge talked about as well. Lavender Town and all those pokemon passing away? Could some of them passed in that war? I know it's a old video here. But just wanted to point these things out. Thanks for the video!

I wouldn't necessarily say this change was done late. The project was super over schedule, people were quitting, anything that wasn't key to finishing a shippable product was not a priority. For example, the first gym leader in Viridian was a hunched-back kid with his hands in his pockets and a rude appearance. Eventually he became Giovanni, and there was obviously a lot of time after that change, given how Viridian gym is blocked and how he features in the story. But he kept the same pose and proportions. It seems that after a certain period, there was no time to fine tune anything.

The Pokemon Yellow source code leak that revealed Pokemon Pink basically confirmed this. The earlier design was a different character named Coleman.

I have explained this one before in the comments but as we have witnessed with the Pokedex and it's missing 39 sprites in the full 190 slot in the data, it just replaces them with garble rather than take a nearby sprite to use. Thus if it was the case here too, we'd see yet another Missingno in its place. Therefore, this would have had to have been intended. If you wish to know more about the 190 slots I mentioned btw, I have a video on it too that came out a bit after this.

I personally think it was a programming error and his design was never supposed to change, but somehow they deleted the wrong sprite. Then they just went with it for future games. It would explain why the manual and anime would have the old design.

Remember in the anime blaine was wearing a disguise with galsses and a mustache. The galsses were circular and his fake mustache looks exactly like the scientist blaine except it was brown. Whats that all about? To acknowledge both designs?

Bro I think missingno was actually a cut pokemon because it's move set was water gun and sky attack (I think) so pokemon red and blue has lots of cut content maybe it was supposed to be a water bird pokemon but was cut from the game because of well space but didn't you notice that missingno has its own battle cry if missingno is just loads of cut content put together than don't you think it would have a battle cry? Because two pokemon were removed from the final version of pokemon red and blue so maybe the battle cry and some of the move set remained? 🤔 3:14. 3:12

Boy I'm really glad they changed Blaine. Not only the current design looks cooler, Lt. Surge does the army guy trope way better. Beta Blaine looks like a total whimp.
