When you lose someone you love, the pain you feel is as severe and real as any physical pain. The capacity to experience mental pain is hard-wired into our brains, but we are not powerless against it: Endorphins are our brain’s natural remedy for both physical and mental pain. Narcotic drugs alleviate pain by activating endorphin receptors but are harmful in chronic use.
Recent neuroscientific discoveries are guiding the development of drugs that may ease physical and mental pain like endorphins, while avoiding the dangers of narcotics. Best of all, when we reach out to comfort someone we love who is struggling with grief and loss, we actually cause their brain to release endorphins that help them endure and eventually overcome their pain.
Prof. Yovell is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist, TV presenter, author, and international keynote speaker. He is an Associate Professor of the Practice at the Department of Medical Neurobiology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His areas of research include the neurobiology of emotions and mechanisms of physical and mental pain. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

There should be at least a million people giving their attendance here, assuming they watch this video, but again, one needs courage to admit to themselves and to others that they are broken 🤔

Well we should be brave enough to love someone knowing that they might not be with us for the rest of our life, in the end we might think is it a fair sacrifice that we made for the time being with them.

I agree. The pain of losing them is horrendous...but what we gained from having them in our lives helps us to find a measure of comfort. The love gained outweighs the pain--and wins in the end.

True, I realised, my son recently passed away at 39,bachelor, all alone in US, ...he has taught me the purpose of life, meaning to live, when I suffered from severe wife abusing husband, and utterly selfish unlaws, who had turned him to be a parasite. My son at the age of 15, stood by me and my younger daughter to enable us to complete the career we were in. Even at this time of irreplaceable loss, my husband continue to wield threat,bullying....

pain is the touchstone to growth...depression precedes growth and it is always 'lonely' on the growing edge...pain doesn't mean, necessarily, 'damage' but 'healing is going on' , 'repair' ... pain is simply a 'pointer' and varies with what is presented with each person...OMski

I don't know if I necessarily agree. Depression does not always precede growth. There are many people who struggle with depression for life and who may go on to commit suicide.

From my humble perspective : PAIN hearts the EGO. So to be HAPPY, one can reduce the pain or the ego. Any mean can be used but on the chemical side, psychotropic drugs like PSYCHEDELICS and other strange RC ( such as A-PIHP) produce interesting results needing more explorations. Peace & love
