My take on the Brooke Houts incident involving her mistakenly uploaded video where she hits her Doberman Pinscher, Sphinx. I realize that this is going to be an unpopular opinion but I truly believe in it. We need to rehabilitate owners as much as dogs, giving up at the first hurdle sets a terrible precedent. Sorry for the break in my usual content, but I couldn't keep my mouth shut on this one.

But here's what I think Brooke should do though: 1. Take up Ethan from H3H3's offer to buy/take the dog away from her and admit she isn't ready to be a dog owner. 2. Turn a bad situation into a positive by being public about her journey on therapy and thus getting her the views and attention that she got the dog for in the first place. (Like half joking)

Brooke simply doesn't love that dog 😢unless she feels correction for her actions in her own heart, for the dog and not herself, then it will not work as she may totally withdraw from this animal in absolute resentment for her loss. I can only hope that things are being monitored closely, I am sure you would have witnessed the long term effects on an animal living that situation. Yes there are horrific abuse cases that out weigh this but this is where it starts, with mistreating. I am not hating on you for your opinion I love how you and human Dad love those babies and the recent cat/dog introduction is fantastic 💖 A change in Brooke to be able to love something other than herself would be worth celebrating (new subbie) 👋

The way she looked at her dog you see disgust on her face and every time she raised her hand the dog flinched, even the spitting, you spit on someone who you hate. The definition says it "treat (a person or an animal) with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly." ABUSE IS STILL ABUSE and should not be overlooked because it's not as bad as other abuse, that doesn't make sense. That is an innocent dog who just wants to play and love his owner and wants the same in return but instead gets hit and spit on, it's absolutely disgusting and trying to make any excuse for her is a shame. She SHOULD get that dog taken away and not allowed to have another one. She has a history of mental issues and being mean to animals. Us humans really don't deserve dogs, they are the ones who love you till the end and treating them in such a horrible way is disrespectful.

People should try this excuse out when CPS comes and tell them that people do wayyyy worse so it's not exactly abuse. If it’s such ok behaviour for her to push, hit, stomp, drag, spit and literally demean her dog. If this is all ‘ok’ and ‘normal’ then why does she need to edit it all out ? Obviously she has been treating her dog like this the whole time, yet until the accidental exposure of her uploading this video by mistake she had persistently edited all this abusive footage out. So I ask again, if it’s all so ok and all so above aboard then why edit it out at all. Should be ok to show the world no? So why did she not always include this kind of footage in all of her videos since the beginning then. Your argument here is highly flawed, you spew nothing more but hypocritical and contradictory dog chews... Nice try but no cigar in this occasion I’m afraid.

Nice to see a calm and rational video on a difficult subject. The reactions to that unpleasant video are very understandable, but one thing that people seem to forget is that some times a compromise, like fixing the current situation, can be the best option for the animal. Dogs (that usually get along) can get into scuffles and miraculously bounce back to bff mode after everything calms down. Her dog still comes to her for affection and play after the mistreatment, so their situation should still be fixable. If the violent and aggressive behavior stops, and trust is rebuilt, the dog gets a chance for a balanced life with a human he has already bonded with. Rehoming can be stressful, scary and confusing, so if the goal is to improve the dog’s situation as soon as possible, correcting the owner’s behavior should be one of the simplest options - all hysteria put aside.

Well done for giving a well balanced realistic opinion on this subject and not just jumping on the hate band wagon. Just hating on someone's bad behaviour to bring them down or punish them helps no one I like that your video was critical but in a constructive way. I didn't know of this girls channel or the drama about the particular video but she seems to me like many dog owners who pick a puppy because it's cute without having practical knowledge or having researched the breed, they soon get overwhelmed and frustrated with the dog when really it's their responsibility to learn and in turn teach, just giving the animal away or having it taken away (unless abuse is definitely present) can't always be the answer, these owners need education and need to be willing to put the work in if after that they still can't manage at least they have tried.

I'm extremely disappointed with this after watching some of her videos. Anyone notice how she raves about humans and dogs being uncomparable in abuse, yet begs for people to sympathize with a psychopath? With how defensive she is in the comments I wouldn't be surprised if she could relate to her, considering abuse as the "first hurdle" for dog owners. I really can't wrap my head around how someone could equate a mentally unjust person and an untrusting dog with the need for rehabilitation. No she should not keep that dog, take a look at her other videos with her dog, look at her jumpcuts why do you think that when her dog starts jumping on her she jumpcuts it? The video she "accidentally" uploaded clearly shows the type of behaviour she has towards her dog when her dog doesn't act the way she wants. This is definitely not a one time offense and she's only "apologizing" because she finally got caught. Take the dog away from her.

Jessica, I saw only a bit of her video and what I saw was reposted. Here’s my observation She has a Power Breed Dog and is in way over her head. Like you said she gave Sphinx missed signals. I don’t know how old Sphinx is but he seems like a young dog. I agree they both need obedience classes. I’ve seen a dog trainer here on KZbin spit in a dog’s mouth. I agree with you, she should keep her dog. If Sphinx is put in a shelter most likely he won’t come out. Good video.

I want to applaud you for having the courage to point out the short-sighted, inflexible, witch-hunt, mentality that the majority of the public has in situations like these. Don’t misunderstand me, I was DISGUSTED and I cried watching Brooke assailing Sphinx. BUT, it’s totally unrealistic to call for dogs to be removed from every owner like Brooke. There isn’t the funding, fosters/potential adoptive fams, shelter space, or resources. Removing most dogs from someone like Brooke isn’t rescuing them from abuse, it’s sentencing them to death row (euthanasia.) Brooke and owners like her can be educated. And that education can save pets lives whilst humbling the owner simultaneously. I once got wise advice from a mentor: “We almost never get the dog we want, we get the dog we NEED. And you need to train that dog. Not the dog you wish you had. It will give you the lesson and wisdom YOU needed along the way, everytime.” I have found it to be true. Brooke needs to learn education, empathy, and patience just as badly as Sphinx. They will teach eachother if properly equipped with the knowledge to do so. *SORRY SO LONG*

THANK YOU. These people are all so out of touch. The word "abuse" is used so loosely these days that it literally has no power anymore. I also think it's disgusting that people are advocating for the dog to be apprehended. You would know first hand what these poor animals face in shelters. Also, that dog loves Brooke, whether people want to admit it or not. Brooke is a part of the pack. Rehoming dogs should only be done if it is absolutely necessary, and I don't think this case warrants apprehension. To say that Brooke is irredeemable is absolutely absurd. She acted ignorantly and out of frustration, but her intentions weren't to physically harm the dog. She is not the malicious "dog beater/abuser" these cancel culture junkies are characterizing her as.

That dog deserves better. Saying she should keep the dog because there would be overpopulation if everyone that harmed there dogs had them taken away is skewed reasoning. Many people have little control over their tempers, its not only a matter of educating their owners. Overpopulation of dog shelters is a beast in itself. There's actually a waiting list in Toronto right now for getting dogs since covid started. Ive fostered many dogs and am still on the list is how I know.

I agree there are a lot of dogs in shelters and most of them don't make it out. It is a terrible situation in shelters a lot of people don't care. they want a pet, it seems they always go to BREEDERS not shelters. you want a dog do your research first, and then go visit your shelter.

It's not just the things she does though... the first clip you see she gets him all excited and then IMMEDIATELY slams him to the ground and gets in his face and holds him there by the neck. She literally punished the dog for doing what she wanted like she just wanted to punish him. She seems like someone who is trying to have power over their dog for the sake of it and might even enjoy him being afraid of her. That didn't look like just frustration to me since the dog wasn't misbehaving and there was no time where she was trying to communicate. Frustration is something that builds- its not split second like that. I've never seen anyone do that and I've never done it in all my years of dog owning. That's not common. And I would argue that it isn't better for a dog to suffer and be abused just to avoid being in a shelter. I can honestly say I'd rather be euthanized than live a life of fear and abuse.

I mostly agree, I don't feel she should lose her dog for smacking him, but I do feel if it dosent improve or it escalates then the dog should be taken and given to a better home. Personally Iv popped my dogs on the snout or butt for poor behavior and doing something wrong, but it's not something that you should do because you get angry at the pup for being excitable. I think it's possible for her to learn to control her emotions better and train her dog in obedience better so that this issues don't arise...also the dog isn't starved or timid and afraid, he clearly still loves her very much, so I don't believe they should be separated just yet. I do feel the girl needs to grow up though.

Between you and @Shadetree_surgeon, some of the most rational and level headed commentary on any subject. I don't know much about the situation, but i agree that strictly positive reinforcement is not very effective, and sometimes negative reinforcement is required, within limits. A smack to my kids ass is not abuse, it is to correct a behavior, again within reason. It is an excellent opportunity for her to learn to deal with her dog, change her training methods to do it properly, and rehabilitate the relationship between her and her dog.

I watched your video and I have to say i agree she’s a brat but I also think she should get her dog taken away and have to pay a fine. I don’t think she should go to jail because as much as I hate and I mean hateeee her for putting her hands on her poor dog, we need the room in prisons for people like Michael Vick. The laws on animal abuse are just not strict enough. I believe all animals are just as important as humans. We are not above them. My 3 dogs 2 of which are high energy (boxer and pit bull/cattle dog) are definitely my fur babies and I would never treat them less than I’d treat anything else. People need to realize humans are animals too and this kind of behavior is not okay.

I understand your point and it makes sense. World sucks, her case is not the worst but she is still a terrible person. A lot of people don't do research when they adopt an animal. Like you cant expect a 10 month puppy to stop play time suddenly when you are done filming them. If Dogs like Dobies are not properly socialized and trained they can be a bit snappy when they get older also. I am wondering why the dog cant attend group classes, is he already aggressive towards other dogs? I hope she gets herself under control and she gets a crash course on Dog training before that beautiful Dobie becomes aggressive instead of playful.

I don't know miss Jess. I agree... and disagree. In my opinion (and you know what they say about opinions) this is absolutely abuse. Not the horrible abuse and neglect that I'm sure you saw working at the animal shelter, but abuse just the same. Saying it isn't is kinda like me saying a terrier isn't a real dog because I grew up around Bull mastiffs and great Danes. It's still a dog. It's just smaller. And while I agree education is always a good thing, not everyone is willing and or able to learn. I think this Brooke bitch has problems beyond education...I mean who the hell spits on a dog? Who spits on anyone? Dont we stop that after adolescence? Great topic lady. I enjoy your videos.

I couldn't agree MORE!!! So many people have turned YT into this hate/judge platform simply because they realize that no one can see how they live their own lives. Calling that abuse would get you laughed out of any court because that is where abusers belong, facing a jury and pleading with him to not go to jail. I call this extremely poor handling and I agree that this probably takes place in many homes. That is unfortunate but shoving, slapping or spitting (wtf?) Is not punchng, stabbing of I honestly don't even want to type in things I know about so I'm just leaving it open for whatever. All of these KZbinrs that are offering to take her dog should put their..... & March down to the local shelter & find out who is next to be euthanized & give him/her a name & adopt him/her. BRAVO for a sane person with an unpopular pov!

Great video Jess. I am so torn on this subject, and on this particular situation. I do believe that some discipline is necessary, and while it looks bad, that dog is not physically hurt from a push or a smack. However, where does it end for her? What is her recourse when discipline doesn’t work anymore, does it escalate to actual abuse? Some people just don’t understand dogs. I think most dog owners need training themselves before they take on the responsibility of having a dog in their life. How can you teach a dog if you don’t know how to communicate with them? If you don’t want to learn, just get a cat. They’re easy.
@thedawghouse4674

Exactly, all good points and questions.. but remember this is most likely the result of Brooke NOT actually disciplining the dog. He is confused by her and she’s has never been taught the proper way to communicate what she wants and what she doesn’t want and when...

I would argue that almost all of us who have children, or animals have behaved in a way we'd be deeply ashamed of if it were immortalized on film, and we've probably forgotten, which is just as well. I do think this case is different in ways yes. She seems to lack any real affection for the dog. He's an asset (though it back fired). But I for one have had to apologize more than once to my children when they were small, for losing my temper too fast, or for shouting at them unfairly, not because it was the right thing to do, but it made me feel better for a moment... Look, I felt just as uncomfortable watching that clip as everyone else, but this demon-ization is getting just as ugly. I grew up during a time when there was no internet and social media, thankfully. But I know people who have done idiotic things that if they did it now...could ruin their lives. Why are people watching someone just because they have a dog anyway? Why are we watching anyones life? We know they're scripted, not real. Are we just waiting for people to mess up so we can get all self righteous? This dog is also a victim of our perverse voyeuristic, unnatural compulsions. Stop going to watch performing animals at the circus, if you dont want them being mistreated. Its supply on demand.
