Burt Lancaster was a product of New York City and a man who was not bound by limitations that others felt. It seemed to me that, as a creative person, he would have more open boundaries in his personal life as a result. And no matter what, he was and remains a class act!!! He really stood for decency.

I grew up around the city of New York and know exactly what you mean. And even there before Stonewall, you could not even have a drink in a gay establishment without fear of arrest. We are talking about the late 1960s and early 1970s. The laws are still archaic though most of them in the U.S.. have changed but not as much as you would believe. Look it up. By all accounts a good father, provider, fair businessman, great lover... you'll get no argument from me whatever his orientation was.? You would think there would have been more talk about it before his death? The fact that it's tied to the FBI at that time makes it it's very "sus" to me because at the time the FBI was run by J Edgar Hoover who had a lot in his "own closet" to boot... Bert supported very liberal causes ,was member of the ACLU... so, it was probably just a way to try and "brand him",scare him and keep him in line so to speak...threaten him? As psychiatrist, this has a bad smell to it. He seems to be an overly confident man who was fiercely loyal to old friends and very confident in his own sexuality. He always liked to poke the nose of convention and his associating with gay men is inline with his supporting other minorities that, at the time, were not treated fairly. I have known many people who preferred to hire homosexuals (men or women) during this era because if you were supportive of them, you had an Excellent and devoted employee. This was a common practice, as was lying by the FBI. It is also common for strangers to see such loyal work relationships, and project their own thoughts into their understanding of those past associations. Men like that laugh at others assuming they too are homosexual. They welcome it. That is the fun of poking the nose of convention. I never met Mr. Lancaster, but I know a great many as I just described.
@albertmarnell9976 Жыл бұрын
I would not see it as a negative if he was bisexual or homosexual. If you mean a bad smell, and are referring to something that might not be true, that I understand. There are many modeling pictures of him on the internet and one nude. He was way ahead of his time. My father was born in 1913 as was Burt and my parents were really phobic as was my mother. It took them time to accept that I was homosexual. That was in the late 1970s to early 1980s. I was out of the house when they called me to ask. I'm glad that I was out of the house. They could only see it in how it affected them at the start. It took time for them to think about the fact that my life would be harder because of my orientation. Better late than never. My father died in 1987 and my mother in 1999.
@davidsauls9542 Жыл бұрын
@@albertmarnell9976 a bad smell, referring to something that might not be true. It is far too common for people to be accused of being gay just because they associate freely with those who are. Then you get a room full of sobered up drunks just dying to tell their stories and talk about their families and acquaintances to everybody at the meeting. After which they leave, fortified with a host of new stories about everybody else who was at the meeting. The Masons? Maybe. Opus Dei? Definitely. The Lions Club? Hell, they advertise. But AA? Nothing anonymous there. "Hi Joe. I hear you and the missus have joined AA." "That's right Clyde. But I wouldn't want this to get around. It's all very confidential." "Oh, right." I really do not care, he was a great actor and he had a right to his own. I have known several gay men and in the end they are just human, not monsters.

Burt Lancaster along with Kirk Douglas were my All Time Favorite Actors. My First time seeing him in a movie when I was about 8-9 yrs old was Brute Force (194?) I don't remember exactly what year in the 40,s it was, but Was My Favorite along with The Killers, Bird Man of Alcatraz, 7 days In May, And of course, Executive Action (1973) and of also Emer Gantry (1960). R.I.P. BURT Lancaster 🙏🏻🌹

I continue to be amazed by people's naivete concerning men liking men sexually....it is very common and most you would never suspect...I travelled for work for years and years.....that is an education.

This is getting RIDICULOUS!!! Every time I turn around my favourite Actors or Actresses are all GAY - BUT we only find out after they've DIED. I WONDER what the TRUTH IS!!!!

I think Burt was a classic ADVENTURER who had such a CAPACIOUS LIFE that he was driven to lust for all kinds. He had so many passions, he had enough to pass around.

As a young gay boy, Burt was one of my first absolute crushes. His on-screen collaborations with Nick Cravat only fueled my fantasies about his true sexual nature. But as was pointed out here, such things just weren't discussed in those days. Burt was IMO, the perfect actor for every role. And Hollywood seemed to feel the same. That ginger hair, and broad welcoming smile will always bring me to recall the stirrings I had as a youngster. 😍

Oh, That's the real meaning of the word "ROMANCE ". I've learned something today! Romance means the sexual act of a man leaning on the back of another willing man in order to satisfy the basic, natural needs of both of the men involved. Thank you so much for this lesson!

Merv Griffin: A Life in the Closet Darwin Porter This biography tells the story of one of America's most successful media moguls. Merv Griffin has interviewed some of the greatest characters in American history, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Joan Crawford, as well as developing the game shows 'Jeopardy!' and 'Wheel of Fortune'. I knew about Merv in the 1980s already if not sooner. Merv had little to loose by coming out. He was so wealthy and his bearding with Eva Gabor was obvious to many. How did I know? I met a guy who said that Merv came him. He lived in Merv's building in Manhattan. Did I see Merv come on to him? No. But I had heard so much already and could see why he came on to this big tall man. You can't even ask Deney Terrio to my knowledge even today. In 1991, he sued Merv Griffin, the producer of Dance Fever, for sexual harassment;[3] the US$11.3 million case was later dismissed.[4]

My favorite movies of Burt Lancaster are with his pal Kirk Douglas but he was a great straight man (no pun intended) in comedy The Halleluiah Trail. Also he played a scary Matoon Scott in Seven Days In Mays which somehow predicted the coming of dictator in training General Mike Flynn.

Unlike Lancaster and Rock Hudson, Marlon Brando fully admitted to having sexual liaisons with other male actors. And one of them was Burt Lancaster, (along with Tyrone Power and James Dean). It would seem to me that Lancaster's continual connections to homosexuals, whether as his employees, close relationships with known gay actors like Rock Hudson, or appearing in biographies of other great Hollywood actors like Marlon Brando, would make him bisexual like Brando. He was a great talent, and many other great actors had the same sexual predilection, it is what it is.

I do not believe he was gay, just like John Wayne…, rumours exploded about his sexuality after he passed away!!

Sorry, but I know he was gay, or more precisely bi-sexual. In 1964 he was in France for shooting THE TRAIN. He was invited to a party in the house of Michel Simon, the famous French actor who also was in the same movie. He came with a close friend and he was much more relaxed than in USA, so his attirance for men was not really a secret for anybody in the party. This being said, I really don't see where is the problem. For me he was before all a great actor.
