They say rejection is the name of the game in the acting industry. Most feel like utter crap when they don't book a role they don't want, but to me it shows progress. You're getting out there, you're putting in the work, you're proving that with every audition that doesn't book. The more you get used to that feeling, the better. Not only does it shield you from feeling negativity from rejection, but it boosts your motivation for when you DO land the roles, no matter how big or small. Never let it get to you, and don't give up.

It's so true even the star actors who have made it, some of them go over 100 auditions without booking everything. Of course it sucks to lose but you gotta move beyond it and focus on one thing at a time and stay positive

I agree with this, and remember guys if you audition for 100 roles you´re bound to get 2 because theirs always a 2% chance that some casting director has a person in mind that is tailor fitted for a specific role. You just have to see how the suit fits you. Good luck to all my actor friends!!

‘The system is not built for you to succeed, you have to break through it.’ These are the words of Matt Damon. These are the words I remind myself of everyday. You have to look at other actors, what they have been through. That’s what inspires me. Daniel Craig was on the streets, shoplifting for food. Damon was going to auditions where kids would be. You have to understand that in this industry, it’s normal to have a gap of being inches away from booking, to watching someone put in the performance of a life time knowing I could have been you, you could have done better. You have to be lucky. And luck could come your way if you don’t give up. It’s about working hard and working smart. Find people. Study techniques. Stella Adler. Lee Strasberg. Study performance. Jack Nicholson. DDL. Marlon Brando. Travel the world. New York. LA. London. You can’t afford to be scared. You must push everything you have. I live in an apartment, I’ve had the police come of because I’m making too much noise when auditioning. Last of all. Expect the expected. Expect failure. And if you’re someone who is very confident. Expect the unexpected. Expect failure.
@DAMON409

That's BS. Matt Damon was a working actor before he made it big. But it is true that Good will Hunting took him to the A list. And he did it by writing his own movie and using his contacts over the years to pull it off. But it all starts with the look. If he didn't have a marketable look, someone else would have played the role in Good will Hunting.

OK, let’s cut the crap, it’s not about working hard it’s not about how much effort you put into. It’s what you look like, it’s who you know, and most importantly, it’s if you get lucky there are some people that have no talent that are in Hollywood making it big. They have an agenda and they’re pushing it so why bother let’s not give them what they want

I try more now to view rejection as redirection! Each time I get an audition come in I view it as an opportunity to work at my craft, to learn. If the outcome from that audition is positive then that's a bonus and if not then it clearly just wasn't meant to be. But I still had that opportunity to give it a shot and grow just that little bit more.

What a great post! I DID give up after being a kid doing commercials and theatre. Now, I’m finding a new fire at 42 and ready to get after it again. I’ve blamed myself for every reason under the sun for years: Lack of proper guidance; too young to know that intimidation was sometimes part of the game; the list went on. I got scared. The only thing to blame was my lack of tenacity & courage. I’ve got both now, & I hope anyone out there who’s struggling overcomes their fears. Because it’s all about just stepping into the ring 🥊

I wanted to be an actress my hole life. When I was a little kid I had almost a regular career in the TV industry in Japan, and I was loving it. I came back to France, went to acting school, moved in Paris. Everyday I was hoping to find an audition. But even finding an audition was something incredibly difficult, sometimes I wouldn't find one in months. I quit acting, one years ago, because I felt like the most unattractive untalented actress ever. I was the most confident kid before. My hole life it was what was making get up in the morning. I am going to try act again soon, put myself outthere. But my confidence is gone, I am terifyed and don't know what to do exactly.

Great video!! I agree 100%. As of late, I haven’t been booking ANY gigs. And I’ve tried so hard, for so many years. I started making little KZbin videos on my channel, and through grinding at day jobs and many sacrifices, made it to LA. After moving, I landed a student film I did for FREE, and a small voiceover gig for $50 in a short alongside an actor who is now a lead in Abbott Elementary. And since that January of 2020…? Absolutely NOTHING. And it’s weird - I know I’m better at acting now. But now I’m in a bigger town, with more competition than ever - there’s professional veterans auditioning for the same student films I could easily land back in my hometown. I just did an actors boot camp and met managers and agents….and the people who bothered to answer me, gave me rejections about how they won’t sign me. I’m chubby, I’m Latina/Middle Eastern, and I don’t have years of classical training. I don’t feel like there’s any place for my dreams in the real world and some days I wonder if I’d have been happier leaving them as a dream, because then I didn’t have to know I tried and I failed. It’s hard. I’ve started losing faith. So I’m changing my mindset! The audition IS the fun. When you’re really trying to act it ends up becoming so much BUSINESS. Auditions are going to end up being the only times you get to act…enjoy them. Work hard on them. Don’t see it as failure. When artists paint in their sketchbooks they don’t think, “I didn’t sell this for $1 mil, it’s crap,” they enjoy the piece in their sketchbook. Or they see it as something to grow. So even if it’s just deafening silence for the rest of my life on these auditions…even if I’m only ever in little videos I make myself…that’s acting. And that’s what I wanted. So that’s enough for me. I didn’t feel like I could share this anywhere else and feel understood. Sorry to flood your comments section, being told “don’t give up” from friends who mean well, but have secure lives as accountants or whatever, just doesn’t make me feel heard. Thanks for what you do, I love your videos.

I don't see how becoming an actor is much different for applying for any competitive job (besides it paying more obviously). Jobs typically look at experience, and it's safer to go with people who have big names in the industry already because you know what their acting range is like. Plus they can draw more attention to a movie - do you think Challengers or Euphoria would have gotten as much attention if Zendaya wasn't in them? Not to mention connections are everything in Hollywood. Same with any job - experience and connections get you far. Without those you'll probably face a lot of rejection
@TheActorsAcademy

It may appear that way, but when you actually look at the numbers the results are staggering. 48.7% of artists make less than $5,000 a year from their art. You make more working at a fast food service working full time than you do an artist. There are 160,000 members in the union and many more actors who are not in the union. Out of just the union members only 12% of their UNION actors can afford health insurance, which requires something in the range of $26,000 It’s not like any other job, because your opportunity for success is drastically lower in this industry. Which is sad for those wanting to get into it, but it’s important to know these facts, because then you can at least navigate it (if you decide to) with a bit more knowledge than the average actor. Here is a link where I do a full breakdown if you are interested - kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5Stp5uBgrSVj7csi=oCh53mjtgSROx7Dg

My favourite celebrity Brie Larson (Room, Captain Marvel) made two videos on her youtube channel talking about her many failed auditions. Honestly, you rarely hear about failed auditions or how tough the life of an actor is. But it's important to know. Brie didn't give up although many of us would have. She only got small parts in a lot of movies. Some did quite well but she obviously wasn't a key part. In 2012, at age 23, Brie booked her first leading role in "Short Term 12", a low-paying indie project. It lead to her getting the role in "Room", a project that could easily been swallowed by Hollywood. She won many awards incl. an Oscar for that role. From then on, she got bigger roles, became Captain Marvel and now was able to do other things besides acting or to shoot her own movie. To hear this was eye-opening to me. If a normal person would go to a job interview and get rejected 5 times, he would do whatever. But Brie as an example tried over and over again, until the point when she almost quit acting, and she got very lucky that she found good roles at the right time that fitted her well.

Just ONE word ✨NEPOTISM✨ There are tons of working actors trying their hardest, taking acting classes, workshops and doing indie films for free in the hopes to land a great role on a tv show or movie. When these potential roles are given to the kids of celebrities with little to no acting or industry training/experience it takes a job away from someone who has put the work in and would ultimately put on a better performance. Ryan Murphy from American horror story 🙄 Hollywood seems to have an addiction with celebrity 1st and talent 2nd. Sad but that’s the reality

@sideeyed7682 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, yeah Nepotism is common in the industry but claiming that’s the reality just undermines all the big entertainers that made it without it. You got to ask yourself if thousands of people make it every year without connections in the industry, what’s stopping you? Plus those Celebrities who get roles with no acting skills or experiences never make it that far in entertainment businesses. They may be used for a time being but the industry doesn’t make long term investment with talentless people, Nepotism or not.

My acting tutor used to say that for every 50 parts your agent puts you forward for, you get 1 audition. For every 50 audions you get forward for you get 1 call back. For every 50 callbacks you get 1 'pencil'. For every 50 pencils you get 1 role. That's basically 1 in every 200 and that's if you're lucky. You need to stay focused and after some skin in the game you'll start to better handle rejection. It never gets easy.

The math on this quote is way off. It’s (1/50) or (2%) * 2% * 2% * 2% In your example. You did ( 1/50) * (1/4) which would be 1/200 but what you described is more like 1/6.25 million which makes no sense. Source: work with statistics

Acting is so much like sales. You have GOT to not care what anyone else thinks, be your own person. Sales is similar because if you want people to buy from you, you must let go of trying to SELL. Just relax and enjoy the time you have. Quit looking at like I HAVE TO have this role. And start saying, I’m going to give it everything, and if that’s not good enough F em. And keep going.

Another way to look at is, "Somebody has to make it, why not you?" And it also depends on your definition of "failure". Why haven't you been on a blockbuster hit? Why aren't you the next James Bond or Bond girl? Why aren't you on the next big "Grey's Anatomy" lasting nearly 20 years? For some people it's, "Dang, why couldn't I get that Honda commercial? Why couldn't I have gotten a speaking role? Why couldn't I have been on the cover and not just on one page?"

Yes, true. But it's a case of supply and demand. Obviously many people want to earn the big bug in sports, in television, in any media and also in the good paying jobs. Obviously there are only limited spots available. During the strike it was said that there are over 60K actors. I read something of 30K. Doesn't matter. There are tons of actors. Either you're right for the role or you're not. Why should you get special treatment? Because you're pretty and you're a nice person? Also you have a lot of talent. It's not like the world really needs actors or entertainers or athletes. But many want to be professional actors, athletes or entertainers. ONly a few spots are open. You can dream. It's alright...

Most people will never make it, getting into a big film and a Hollywood production is beyond rare, only 2% of actors make a living out of it, and also remember in modern society looks matter more than ever and most actors made it because of their good looks many refuse to believe the truth many people won’t ever make it but heck you can try all you want.

I also think 90% of actors actually aren’t that good. Plus every role isn’t for everyone. That’s why agents good agents are important so they can find you roles that you would have a higher chance of getting cause it matches your characteristics visually and your capabilities

99% of "acting" is looking, not acting. That is why your head shot is the first step and gets you in the audition, or doesn't. So if you don't have a strong look, you'll just get frustrated and go nowhere, regardless of how well you can act. You may do a few crappy indie shows or student films, but you'll either get very small roles or no roles at all once you try to go pro and join the union.

I’m sorry but I hate to disagree. It’s not progress because you can do the same thing over and over and never get anywhere. There are people who are talented that should automatically book and they’re not getting it and they have the same talent. Every time I people can audition less time than you, and so many rules just because they look a certain way so fast point everybody should just start making the wrong contact because that’s the only way you’re ever gonna get a job in this industry

Thank you SO much for making this video. I (and no doubt other struggling actors) needed to hear this, needed the reminder that as long as YOU know that you shows YOUR best work in your audition and remember the REALITY of it all- that the industry is hard in general, and you’re usually up against 100s, hey, maybe even 1,000s of other actors- then really don’t be too hard on yourself (and maybe have a side hustle to distract yourself from the rejection? 😅). 🙂♥️
