Bought our daughter, who had barely passed her drivers test, a green 97 850 back in 2013. That thing would come home from college weekly with a new ding, dent, broken front blinker lamps, missing wheel covers, bent rim etc. Old Betsy drove my kid all through college, one time I checked the oil and the oil stick came up clean and dry like new.... it drove with no complaint without oil for I don't know how long. Daing thing was practically indestructible! Thank you Betsy for keeping our kid safe!!

the broken odometer is a quick fix, there is 6 screws that hold the dashboard, after that you can lift the whole housing out and dissassemble it. it's a small sprocket in the middle of the odometer that dries and a tooth breaks of

@1:48 Yes, if you are a collector it is wise to do so. Let alone that those examples are rare to begin with. However, it is always wise to not buy the cheapest clapped out banger for a pocket change. 😊 These cars are fairly reliable and can reach 500,000 miles without major repairs.

Picking my GLT up tomorrow, can't wait! Not like anything i've ever owned before (coming from BMW E21, E30) but i'm buying this off of my gf's dad for a couple of hundreds. I'm getting it because it'll be easier to go to college and back, as i don't wanna daily-use my e30. Old, bad condition but i'm crazy about that car!

By the way, my mechanic notes that BMWs like Mercedes are set up that you can just fix/replace one part - you have to do ALL of them together, and their parts are always premium priced. Not do with Volvos. Have no idea about Volvo quality now that it’s owned by the Chinese. My 1997 850 T-5 was one of the last from Volvo as and independent Swedish Co.

My friend owns a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo, and it has been a nightmare taking care of the thing. Exhaust pipes break, under the hood piping goes to shit, and electronics go bad all the time. ABS fuse went bad and caused the OBDII port to not work. Fuel injector stuck open and caused possibly irreversible engine damage. MAF sensor caused the engine to run like shit for a while. Oil. Leaks. Everywhere. EDIT: car does run, but the mystery issues are not ideal.

thx for that input! Yes, each unit and model is differnt and there is the factor of time and conditions the car operated or sat for long periods, etc. Luck of the draw, but at this point, most of these will need major money put in and many small hassles that most shops cannot deal effectively/affordably with.

something i noticed after buying one, is that it has an indicator for slippery roads when it's cold outside... i actually got pretty chocked by that.

No side airbag? In 1997 all 850s had an airbag in the backrest of the seat. Though quite small and probably not as effective as a modern side curtain airbag....

Make sure u preventatively change out the heater core, not hard job! PCV of course. Timing belt. Be ready to have many small issues
