If it's a safety requirement, the knowledge has been learned from past tragic events. The least we can do is respect these people by learning from past mistakes and accidents so more people can survive in these situations.

“Window shades are requested to be raised by crew members…” my understanding is that in certain jurisdictions it is a requirement for shades to be raised so that passengers (and crew) can judge outside conditions better - especially those required to operate emergency doors. It surprises me then that in those countries where passengers are allowed to lower shades that it is not a requirement for lights to be always be dimmed for take-off and landing so that eyes adjust to the reduced cabin light.

I had the same thought as you. 🤷

Small correction: Cone cells are only for color vision in bright light, and they are mostly placed in the focal point on the retina. Rod cells are specialized for low light conditions, but don't detect color, and they give you your peripheral vision.

As a private pilot, yes we were also taught this. Thank you.

I was wondering about this exact topic on my outward and return flight from Greece. Though they could have left the lights off in the night. It was so much nicer sleeping in the dark at 4am in the morning lol.

I did not know that. I'm glad I do now.

Another reason we dim the lights is to reduce the electrical load on the engine, so that it produces the maximum thrust at the time of take off.. My view..
@dresengineering2 жыл бұрын
Does it also save power? How many watts does it take at full on vs dimmed? x seconds in a flight, which gives us a fuel cost...
@nik88882 жыл бұрын
Japanese airlines don’t dim lights. In fact they put them on brightest mode.

True, just flew ANA today from Hong Kong to haneda. They didn’t dim light even at night (landed 7pm in Japan time)

So, in the summer of 2015, I went on a flight from Portland, OR to Tokyo, Japan. We were on a wide-body aircraft operated by Delta Air Lines flight 636. Since then, my family and I have contemplated what aircraft we flew on. I think it was the A330 while my dad think it was the Boeing 777. Do you happen to know?
@TheMan-WhoIsIt2 жыл бұрын
a330 typically has a 2-4-2 seating configuration, while the 777 has 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 configurations

I had a feeling that it was so your eyes could adjust to the dark. I would say that it also helps the pilots.

1:39 Yet a number of Instagram travel influencers keep toting this "IG hack" where you hold your phone against the window by pulling the blind down at critical phases of flight to capture a timelapse video clip "for the gram".🤦🏿

I didn't know it had to do with the vision I thought it had to be with the engines to produce maximum power during take off and landing

Many years ago when I travelled overseas many times I thought it was to stop terrorists on the ground from seeing the illuminated cabin and getting a target from a ground to air missile so the shades were closed. I remember this distinctly on night flights while overflying parts of Africa. I believe it is now the opposite. I was also told this by a security expert. Regards from South Africa
@erich9302 жыл бұрын
Well, I can tell you that was probably bogus. Airplanes have very bright external lights that are required to be turned on at night. These are primarily the green, red and white positions lights, and the strobe lights.

Just wondering, how comes Japanese airlines do not turn off their cabin lights dhring night flights?

Hey, I'm facing a problem with the new videos which are coming up only in Simple Flying. It shows 'The video is unavailable '. I tried everything restarting my laptop, try on another device. It's not working anywhere. So if anyone here is facing the same problems, pls let me know.

You use Airbus A350 as an example for Cabin Mood Lighting but it actually infact was initiated by B787 Dreamliner 4 years before the A350 came along. I’m just being factual because as a Clinician we dwell on facts!!
