I am in no way ruthless, but I negotiate as much as possible, within reason. I once went to a yard sale and got several Ninja turtles cheap. I had no idea their real worth at the time, and told her if I hit a home run that I would come back and pay her more. I sold them in a day for $1200! I knew that the lady was doing regular yard sales to get rid of her deceased husband’s collectibles/hoarding stuff, so I went back the next sale and gave her $80. She almost fell over! BUT, she called me after that and gave me private picks the day before each yard sale! So honoring my word went a LONG ways with her.

What I always chuckle is many flipper/reseller content creators answer this question but then also have videos or rants about "lowball offers on eBay". These folks literally make a living off lowball purchases and have the gall to complain about getting lowballed. SMH...

@dianem695110 ай бұрын
Yeah, now that’s irritating. Sometimes I’ve accepted low ball offers. It’s up to me if I want to or not. I don’t get mad. I understand. It’s part of the business. One time I laughed and just accepted the offer. Because they countered back that was close to the first offer they made. I could block them or refuse the offer. It was just funny. For me it’s just a part of reselling. So anyway, I agree with you.

Right because people who resell should take a loss? If I get an offer that is reasonable I'll accept it. But if making money is the goal you have to buy it right.
@WellnessWizdom10 ай бұрын
There's a difference between a reseller offering $2 on a $3 item that is probably going in the trash anyway and offering $10 on a $75 item listed on eBay.
@gggeeek10 ай бұрын
@@WellnessWizdom I doubt resellers are making a living off $2-$3 trash items; they are looking for the high sell through items they can get cheap and very rarely do they even think about negotiating up (minus getting good will points on a KZbin video); they are always trying to offer less than ask. No different than someone coming in at $10 and a $75 ebay listing. There should be no reason to look down or be upset about either side of this. This is as old as human nature. Resellers just shouldn't be a hypocrite about it when that is the bedrock of them being a reseller/flipper.
@CM021110 ай бұрын
It isn't like most stuff sells the second you list it. Look at how much stuff is in the bins in the video. There is work involved to clean it, list it and then it will likely sit for some period of time. You also have to pay for variables such as fees, packing supplies, income tax, electric, your salary, healthcare, etc. The more you pay for an item, the less money there is available to buy more inventory and grow your business. If the 2 sides are mutually agreeable, then there is no issue in my mind. They can always say 'no'. People at garage sales are taking the cash and walking away with no strings attached. The person who buys the product may not see a return on the investment for 6 months. They may not ever see any return on the investment.

First and foremost I am always polite when negotiating. People get rid of stuff for many reasons and sometimes the reason is they have too much stuff and just want it out of there. Others reasons may be a sad one, like a death in the family or needing to move due to health issues etc. If the price looks great, then I don't negotiate much. If I spend time there and looking at several interesting things, I ask if I buy them all or a large quantity, can they reduce the price a bit, the answer is almost always yes. I think the key is to be respectful and look into their situation and don't berate them if their prices are too high or insult them. Always be polite. I occasionally have a garage sale and prices are always priced to sale. Most I ask for something is 5 dollars, some furniture is 20.00 but the last garage sale I had all the people that came to my sale were so excited by the prices of all things. I had tables that would empty out and I will fill it up again and then it was gone again. I had people come back the next day also. It's a garage sale and prices should be priced to get rid of. I am good with getting rid of things and happy with all sales.
@rachelo354810 ай бұрын
I try to negotiate to the lowest possible price. It's funny... in conversation with resellers at Goodwill, they were talking about how "They just want to you know make a little bit off of what they buy." I flat said, "My goal is to pay as little as possible and sell for as much as possible." I enjoy going to the thrift store and garage sales, but my main objective is to make money reselling. Also, sometimes items are not as good as you think they are and then you stand to lose money. If you miss an imperfection, if your comp was off. Not to mention shipping inflation and returns. You need to have some padding in your buy price to make sure you don't lose or at least lose less if something goes awry.
@jeterman29ny10 ай бұрын
I've said this before and I'll say it again. The people who say things like "don't you feel bad paying so little and making so much on someone" need to watch the show shark tank. Do you think they feel bad investing $50k on something and making $30 million? Every product you have ever bought started out way cheaper than what you paid. If you shop anywhere, you're buying from a reseller who got the item much cheaper and the person who bought it who sold it to that retailer got it even cheaper. It's how people make money. Also, there's so much behind selling something. There's gas and shipping materials and employees (sometimes) and time to take pics, comp an item, make a title and description, possibly cross post and then there's waiting on an item. You aren't even guaranteed your item will sell when you buy it. You're taking all the risk and the seller no longer has to worry about it. If the seller had the ability and knowhow and patience, they could also sell it for a higher amount and I think a lot of sellers realize that, which is why they often sell it so cheap.

If you are buying stock for a store from a wholesaler you still look for deals and sales. You get supplies from someplace like Uline, you want the lowest price possible. Yard sales are the wholesaler for a lot of people, you still want to look for the best deal. I think a lot of folks who comment on this really are jealous of the work ethic of others and their ability to make something out of nothing. I rarely negotiate. I had a former father-in-law who haggled to the point it was embarrassing and I can't ever forget that. It's just not for me. If I find something seriously underpriced I will often buy something else that they will never get rid of (in my opinion) to kind of make up for it. Then I just donate that extra item. If it is overpriced, I might make one offer that is really what I want to pay, usually pretty low. If they don't take it I walk away. I often get my lowest price that way. But I don't haggle. They get one shot. There is hardly ever anything I want badly enough to haggle for.

The negotiation process is very much on a case by case basis for me. It depends on the format (estate sale, yard sale, flea market, marketplace transaction etc...), the asking price, the condition of the item, my relationship to the seller (complete stranger or estate sale host that i see often?) I have a range/maximum I'm willing to pay. Sure, I'd like to pay rock bottom, but like many, im willing to "pay up" to a point for the right item. And unlike virtually all other estate sale companies, I'm lucky to have some around that have some leeway, somwtimes even on the first day, and especially for a familiar face.

I appreciated your comments about different cultures having different takes on pricing. When I was in Korea back in the mid 80's, If I had a day off I always took the very earliest bus to get to Seoul to shop, usually for gifts for my wife and sons. The custom there was that if the first person who entered their shop that day did not buy something, they would have a really bad sales day. By being firm and ready to leave at any moment without the item, I sometimes got as much as 80% discount. OF course, they still made money, just not as much, and I was ecstatic because I got a great buy on really nice things for my wife and sons. It truly was a case of "the early bird gets the worm!".

I’m no where near ruthless because of where I pick, I don’t go to many garage sales. This past summer at a garage sale I haggled from $100 to $50 and I’m so happy I did because the “brand new item” I purchased from this sweet little ole lady was not the item in the “sealed” box and it was broken!! I was out the $50 and the $38 shipping fee!!! since I am still learning, that was a hard hit for me, I now get the art of haggling 😅😅I get buyers who should get the golden awards for the way they haggle with me😂!! During the neighborhood sales if I’m obviously thinking about it they’ll usually say they’ll take less. They’re not hard up for the money and they participate in the sale for fun. You can easily bulk up items to buy too. I don’t always buy the item when they say they’ll take less. I’m not experienced enough to know it’s reselling value. There has been times my unwillingness to ask for discounts went bad, I remember this one time at a Yardsale they had a lot of Nintendo stuff, consoles, games, good Pokémon ones and Mario, but the prices were a bit higher than I was comfortable with so I just started looking at other stuff, then someone offered them $50 for everything, they settled at $70, this was over $100 off the sticker prices, I totally would have paid $70 even $100, I wanted to say Hey I’ll do $80 but that would have been weird… So sometimes my unwillingness to negotiate hurts my business, no doubt.

The opposite is of course situations posted "all prices firm" and most formal year round businesses. I identify the market type and then the situation to see how much flexibility I have. Making an dedicated offer is sometimes better than throughing out the lowest number because educated offers convert to sales.

IMO, I’m a reseller who utilizes the Goodwill Outlet so I’m paying by the pound. And I find great items to flip for pennies on the dollar, should I be paying more per pound or charging less because I got a deal? Further, I have an annual rummage sale. I love the folks who offer for items…I’m looking to move it out the door. I can refuse the offer.

Is there anything to do if you dropped off your item to the post office but they did scan it until the next day, which resulted to eBay dinging your account for late shipment?

Negotiation is just part of the game. I don't haggle an awful lot because if I'm looking at a tag sale item it's usually priced at pennies on the dollar to begin with, but I also don't do flea markets. (they're always on Sundays here, when I'm in church.) Estate sales are firm on the first day unless you're buying quantity. You have to know your prices and your expenses. (the usual rule of thumb is sale price = 1/3 to 1/4 resale price) Then again, there's good business and there's greedy. One local lady and her boyfriend are notorious, and none of the regulars has a kind word to say about either of them. That's no way to live.

12:10 Does anyone ask Walmart or StarBucks how much the pay for the item before THEY purchase it? I get so tickled at people who think you shouldn’t try to get the best price when you can! They obviously just don’t understand! Just my opinion!

Perspective. If I go to someones garage sale and they have things priced thats what I pay. Anything other than that its time for honesty, If I need barter with them I tell them I intend resell and I'll make an offer. Some people are fine with that others have told me to leave which is fine. You either have ethics or you dont and if you dont then dont fault others who dont and perhaps take advantage of you. At least that's how I think about it.

I am not a negotiator at all. In fact when I do yard sales, I have my price listed and when someone wants to offer me 1/2, I just raise the price on them. Some people are so nasty when they ask for a lower price, like the seller owes it to them. I have yet to see anyone at Lowes, Walmart or the grocery store negotiating every purchase with the checkout lady.

I don't aggressively claw out every dime. I am simply honest, blunt, and straight to the point, so as to not waste each other's time & energy. If I can't afford a seller's price (like really, like I don't have the funds, which where I am right now, every day), I make a low-ball offer. If they decline, no hard feelings, and I move on. If folks are going to complain or whine about what others do (or accomplish) when no actual harm has been caused, those folks are obviously not very happy with themselves or life or both. Not my problem. I am not defined by other people's opinions and beliefs. I have no issues maintaining certain boundaries, expectations, and priorities. Note, my involvement in this type of "stuff" is a little different. I may be termed a reseller, but in truth (at this point in time), I am simply liquidating my father's belongings to pay for my mom's living expenses. Sure, one or two items may get mixed in with his stuff, but my time/labor has value (no shame here). Now, when I eventually get rid of all his stuff, which could take another year or two even; even though he passed away in July of 2023, I will revisit the possibility of becoming a reseller. Like most folks, I already have three jobs, so I have no interest in getting a fourth job, BUT as I digest the content on a lot of folks' channels and assess my situation (and my mom; since she is my priority), I can see myself doing this "stuff" (reselling etc). I would seriously consider creating a side business in reselling. I always loved going to garage sales and flea markets. And I am a closet dumpster diver. I don't like to see stuff end up in the land fill, and if I see something that I can lawfully (w/o injuring someone else) make some extra money off, I will take the opportunity w/o hesitation.

Learned out by me at least most people are giving the stuff away. They did the work to have the garage sale or put it on Facebook marketplace and they don’t want to ship it so they’re really happy to get anything or they’re just gonna end up giving it to Good Will or one of the other thrift stores

I negotiate for EVERYTHING, not just inventory. I am the original super couponer before it's was cool. I once walked into a Kmart and pushed hard enough to get a VCR that was too high for "this" customer to reach, at the cost of the lowest on sale deal. I still, to this day, save every penny. Where do you think Spending Cents came from? It's not about buying for Ebay.. lol
@Aaramlias10 ай бұрын
Tp be honest with what you have to pay in fees especially on Ebay .. you need to get items at the best price as you can. If you can get stuff for about 10 to 30 of what you're going to sell it for then you're doing good. At 50% or more many time you're losing money on the items. I have a price in mid for everything I want to buy and I either buy it at it's price or try to get the best deal as I can on it or I don't buy at all.

I only do this part-time, as I do hold a long time full time job, but my sales are always sporadic. I can sell 6 items in 2 days, then 3 more the next day, and then 3 weeks can pass before the next sale. I’m sure there are multiple reasons for this, like title, pricing, not listing consistently, etc. Luckily, my sales don’t mean much towards my household budget, but it still gets frustrating. What erks me the most is when eBay decides to delist one of my items, for some cock-a-mamy reason, while I see hundreds of ads for the very same item. What the hell is up with that?

I’m mostly a thrifter, but I haggle all the time and most of the time I get my way. When I worked for a retail garden center half the vendors we would wheel and deal with to get a better price. You can’t always do it but if you don’t even try it’s your loss.

I like to get my items for as low as I can but I don't go crazy with the negotiating processs. The ones I don't like to deal with are those that start with "well, on Ebay this goes for XXX dollars". I want to say to them then why don't you take the time to take photos and type descriptions and sell on Ebay? They don't want to do the work but want Ebay prices. Those kinds of sales I usually turn around and leave.

Yard Sales.... If I'm only buying 1 item, I typically pay the price if I think it is reasonable. Multiple items? I always try to get some discount. At Estate Sales, I often offer a price for the pile BEFORE they "ring it up".... Believe it or not, they often accept my offer just so they can get to the next customer. I don't care if people are critical of my methods. I don't tell THEM how to do THEIR jobs.

I’m having a garage sale this Saturday. I have 25 cent items to a I-pad for $50. I love to buy at yard sales & have also flipped thru marketplace. My theory on selling is these are fair priced items so if your not interested in my asking price Well, move on😂.
