I think what people mean is that you could sign and speak together to your baby if it is a possible goal that he can speak. I know you don’t want to exclude your wife and daughter, but if you’re signing and speaking out loud at the same time, nobody is left out and everyone can understand. As he gets older just make it a rule that if your talking vocally you have to sign too if you’re in the house.

For anyone confused and not able to understand ASL they took the time to add subtitles to translate the entire video. Just turn on your KZbin (CC) ClosedCaptions.

It’s on for all of my other videos every day, but nothing comes up on this video and when I go to settings there’s no choice to turn it on or off, I’m highly confused lol

Thank you for sharing! I wish ASL was taught more frequently, especially in school. I love that you say your children (or child Jabez) will learn to speak (English) at school. Many, many people pick up their second (or third) languages at school, and it seems foolish that others are belittling you for making that same decision many other parents make. Thank you for sharing your life, love, and family.

This was such an awesome video!! Really appreciate you explaining the context. Speaking in English would be like leaving people out of the household and telling them I’ll tell you later and forgetting to do that as most people do ruins the communication experience. Totally makes sense to speak in asl!

That is an amazing video. I am a health care professional (physical therapist) and I get asked this question quite often. If a child is not walking, should I get him a Walker. I always tell parents to not use a Walker until later when the child is going to school. Give the child the time and opportunity to try mobility in his way. He does not have to walk in a pattern like others. Walking is to take you places and if he wants to crawl and go, so be it. But I get questioned by pediatrician why I did not recommend Walker. Walkers and gait trainers are assistance to use in outdoor spaces. In your house, you have the right to use whatever mobility you are comfortable with.

It a huge problem with seeing disability as “wrong”. It’s not and in so many cases it is just different (sometimes challenging different). I’m so glad there are professionals like you talking and explaining that differences are okay; and learning how to best be in your own body first! Thank you!

Your first language is ASL, just like someone who their first language is Chinese or Spanish. You wouldn't speak a language not known by everyone at home. It makes no sense. I just found your channel. You guys are AWESOME

I haven't finished the video yet but I would like to say something: first of all, as they said, sign languages are proper languages! I think the best thing is always for parents to speak their first language to their kids, who can then learn other languages growing up, in school or other situations. If ASL is their first language, I think it's only natural that they use it with their children. Their son (and daughter, why not?) can then learn English as a second language in the future. It always annoys me when people want to force parents to use different languages with their kids 😔

Hey! I’m new to following you on instagram and when I saw you had a KZbin channel I came right over. Jabez just made me smile because my nephew does the same exact thing when he sees an image of himself, so that was peak adorableness lol. Your family is wonderful and thanks so much for being so open and providing an explanation for those of us who have the disadvantage of not growing up around deaf folks. I see now how beautiful and important ASL is. I have a question about how you feel about questions…when does curiosity go too far?
