I love both cash games and tournaments. Nothing really beats the thrill of late tournament strategy though.

I play online tournaments from the UK and play 5:30pm until sometimes 2:00am or later. I prefer tournaments for the upside potential. Not like you're going to 100x your buy-in during one session of cash, but if you bink a tournament that is very possible.

Yes, but you will lose 10 buy ins much easier in tournaments than you would in cash.

To me, cash play is the purest form of no-limit hold'em.

I prefer tourneys.... You're playing for something (to win!). In a cash game, youre just playing.... to win, sure. But Tourneys are just so much more fun and exciting, Especially when you make the final table. Our local tourneys are turbos so they never go past 10pm, and start at 3pm. Deep stacks only go for 6.5hrs and then next day finish. Tourneys for me. However, I will admit cash game players are more talented than touney players. If you make steady profit at cash games, you're a very very good poker player (top 10% of the field). In a tourney, average players can win a couple flips at later levels in a row and bam, they at the final table.

Cash is good if you're playing regularly and are bankrolled. If you're not then shot taking via satellites into tournaments are better imo. Another thing I like about live multi day tournaments are the hour's. Usually you're done by 22.30 unless it's the final day.

The thing I don't like about online cash games is they limit you to 100bb buyins. Whereas in a live environment it's common for people to buy in for 500-1000bb leading to unique situations and more room for maneuver

After 10 years of playing entirely SNG and MTT, i have switched to cash after a 9 month long downswing where i lost 600(avg)BI, even though my EV line was positive, i did move down as needed but my bankroll took a huge hit obviously. The variance aspect is definitely my reason for switching. Also i found it hard to put in really high volume in these formats without playing 16 hour days. I've been playing cash games for around 1 month now and already MUCH prefer it. I started with 9max, but quickly switched to zoom instead for more hands/hour, as PS only allow you to play 4 cash game tables at once, so zoom just makes more sense from an hourly perspective.... In conclusion my advice for beginners is to start at 2nl zoom and build your way up slowly. Once you have a massive roll you can think about moving out of zoom for higher stakes action. That would be my plan if i could start over.

You make good points about MTTs having higher potential payouts (30X+ etc.) compared to 100 BB "stacks" in cash games, in addition to a more dynamic nature involving new opponents constantly. The obvious potential dealbreaker for tourneys though is the time required to remain at the table if you plan to make a deep run. Overall maybe an appropriate balance based on goals and preferences is the best way.

One thing is also that the income ceiling of cash games is way higher. Though its way harder to get there to play 100k+ buyins in cash games

Tournaments are way more fun. People tend to joke more and enjoy playing a wider variety of hands without thinking they might lose “real” cash. Plus there are more fishes in the sea ;)

IMO cash games favor the better players significantly more than tournament play does. If you are a weaker player who at least understands the basic strategies of tournaments you will find there is less to think through than in cash games meaning easier decisions.
