Japan and the Philippines have signed a historic defence agreement, allowing both countries to station troops on each other’s soil. The pact is the first of its kind for Japan in the region. At the same time, Tokyo and Manila have been strengthening their alliances with the US and its allies in the region, including South Korea, India and Australia. China, which seeks to extend and maintain its influence in the region, has denounced any alliance-building. Why has the latest agreement sounded alarm bells in Beijing?

Countries are free to join whatever alliance they want. This means Cuba is free to ally with Russia and Solomon Islands are free to ally with China. Likewise, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Australia, who already have alliances with the United States can also make them with each other.

China's military strength is way beyond the combined military strength of Japan plus the Philippines. There are only 3 countries in the world that are military super powers, i.e. the US, Russia and China. FYI, even Singapore is stronger militarily than the Philippines, let alone China. The Philippines have no advanced military hardware in their arsenal and neither do they have the numbers in soldier count. It is not that China is worried but more of annoyed. I live in China last year, things they don’t tell you is poverty is rampant and unemployment is high. That’s why they are oversupplying because they can’t stop production or unemployment will no longer be bearable for their economy. Bro, Filipinos are literally the 4th largest foreign community in Japan and they’re the group that also has the most intermarriages with the Japanese, yes they face discrimination problems like all migrants face but my people can assimilate literally anywhere and there are a lot of Japanese celebrities and athletes who are half Filipino or less. The problem only arises if large swathes of non-asians migrate to Japan, additionally to that, choosing to not assimilate as we’ve seen so far in the west.
