Why China Fears US's NEW Hypersonic Fighter Jet Engine

Today, we take a closer look at Hermeus Quarterhorse and their groundbreaking hypersonic jet engine technology. These innovative engineers are shaking up the aviation industry and pushing the boundaries of speed with their technology capable of reaching Mach 5 speeds which is greater than five times the speed of sound. It turns out that the key to making hypersonic flight a reality is something called a turbojet-ramjet hybrid engine.
The first question we ask ourselves is - how are they doing this when industry giant Lockheed Martin has been working on their own hypersonic jet, the SR-72 Son of Blackbird, for almost a decade now? And each unit is expected to cost over $1 billion dollars?
Well, to answer that question, we need to take a look at the engine that's powering their aircraft, the Quarterhorse. It's a turbojet-ramjet hybrid known as a "turbine-based combined cycle" or (TBCC) engine. It turns out that Hermeus has a secret weapon: their engine, the Chimera. It's a mixture of old and new technologies, including an afterburner, ramjet, turbojet engine, precooler, and rear inlet.

Their competition isn't Lockheed and Raytheon (who build aircraft). It is GE, Pratt and Whitney, and Rolls Royce (who build engines). Hermeus will likely need to team with one (or more) of them to get this done (much like Reaction Engines has with Rolls Royce).

It'll definitely revolutionize the space industry (when equipped with rocket engine). It'll be a fully reusable spaceship with potentially higher fuel efficiency. The space will be cheap.

You asked. Raytheon has the J-58 from the 1960's that transitioned from turbojet to ramjet in flight by improving the afterburner and feeding it with bypass air. Given the difficulties of manufacture and operation, it was certainly not practical. Oh, and sec. McNamara personally supervised the destruction of all of the tooling in order to insure that nobody else could have one.

It's the other way around. A hypersonic jets can attack targets with many times lower cost. Not like a hypersonic missile that cost 100 Million or so and can only be used once.
