Another thing that China does different in terms of building their infrastructure is that they make public transport a public utiliity to keep the cost as low as possible for everyone going so far as to subsidise what would lose money. Whereas, a lot of times in G7 countries, they got privatize and/or try to earn a profit. As a business person and a capitalist, I used to think the Chinese model is unstainable. Nowadays, I look at the actual productivity of a lower logistic cost that translate to lower cost of living and cost of shipping which in turn generate higher productivity may offset those susidies. And I wonder about the wisdom and efficiency of our finacialize economies and there is a margin built into every level during the contruction, the maintainance and future expansion that result in higher cost of living leading to high inflation and worse of all inflict that on the majority of the population. And to top it off, the same can be said about healthcare as well.

Absolutely agree 100% with your observations - a view I share and have held for decades. As someone who studied Economics and have been involved in business all my life, when I saw governments in my country began to privatize public utilities (power, roads, banks, water, health, etc), I knew that the day would come when we will regret it. Private companies operate in the interest of its owners - the shareholders and seldom if ever, in the interest of the public. Ergo, profits are all that truly matters. Whatever capital assets they may have when they bought over the utility eg power stations , they will run those highly costly assets to the ground to squeeze every single drop they can get before even considering an upgrade or a replacement and when they do, they will charge the public for it by increasing prices under the pretext of (a) degrading equipment that needs more maintenance, (b) increasing demand for a limited output from ageing equipment and (c) costs of upgrades. There is no way that a privately owned entity will "wear the costs" for the public good. So, there we have the start of inflation as the costs of power, roads, rail, transport. banking goes up, all those flows outward to the rest of the economy which in turn leads to demand from labor for higher wages to cover the increase in cost of living. This flow on effect benefits no one except the very few up the top who gain from higher prices and we have seen this happen in the U.S. where 1% of the very wealthy rides on top of the vast "poor" below them.

Where the owners are all Billionaires, yet they ALL force their city to foot the bill for new stadiums or they move the teams to another city that is willing to foot the billion dollar cost of stadiums. Just look at the Chargers that left San Diego and Raiders that left Oakland. For a country to function optimally, there needs to be a balance of capitalism and socialism.

You have a point. As a Chinese, I used to be surprised because China's transportation and healthcare, based on revenues and investments, were huge losses that required the state to invest heavily to keep them running. There were also a lot of protests in the country at the time that this was ridiculous. Now I kind of get it, on the surface it loses money, but in reality, it's another kind of invisible investment: a direct investment in the nation.

That's the difference between having a government of 90% Engineers (like China) verses a government made up of 90% Corporate Lawyers (like USA). Engineers build solutions to solve problems. Corporate Lawyers check with corporations first, to see it the solutions will impact on their profits. If so, then either the project stops, or the Corporate Lawyers add more clauses to USA laws to protect the interests of Corporations ... such as Tax Payer compensations. Hence why Civic Infrastructures and Civic Services are poor in USA (compared to every other developed Country in the World) because the government of USA have very little Tax Payer money left to build solutions.

Common sense prevails. The main reason for the British messy politics is 75%++ of the cabinet ministers do not understand science and technology. They are largely made up of graduates of PPE or other Humanities disciplines. As ex-PM BoJo said, he gave up Science since was 15 and this explains he, together with his team , is alienated from the reality of problems of healthcare services, infrastructure development and manufacturing, agricultural and telecommunication policies. Professional healthcare professionals, scientists and engineers simply get these political elites to work with them pragmatically.

President Xi said it at the last meeting with President Biden in San Fransisco, but the Western media quickly brushed over it, and their anchors did not discuss it. I was working and living in China for 16 years and saw no need to drive at all. I took the public transport everywhere (taxi, bus or metro, high speed rail) they are reliable and cheap. However since coming back to Australia I had to get a car after 2 years on public transport. Although I do like taking public transport, it is not so convenient here, destinations can be difficult to get to without a car and can be expensive (taxis), public transport are also frustrating to find when you needed them most.

Beijing has vowed to be a bike-friendly city, and while it's not perfect, it's really good enough. One thing that's really nice about the Communist Party is that it keeps its word. I remember a few years ago when they said they were going to create a low carbon travel, bike friendly city, I wasn't so sure. But this year, in the district where I live, 210 kilometers of bicycle greenways have been built, and another 440 kilometers are expected to be built. So when I go out now, I can use my bike exclusively and take the greenway along the river (I use my bike exclusively for all trips within 100 kilometers, and really enjoy biking!)

Yeah I was also skeptical communism would work, but after I learned the structure of Communist Party, I understand why it works. Compared to choosing leadership by voting, in China leadership rise up by achievement. That's why they are very serious in building infrastructure even to the most down level. In contrast, people usually forgets the achievement and mistakes of candidate after a few years. And if the media is controlled we might not know. The structure of Communist Party is a bit like corporation, which makes it very competitive, which also resulted in them being more careful. Nepotism also gets reduced especially in upper level since no one could be unbridled in a sense.

@@KF-zb6gi Hahaha, the Chinese themselves are surprised that the CCP seems very different from the Communist Party in the traditional sense. Sometimes we say, it's socialism with Chinese characteristics, sometimes we say, "hit the left light, turn right" (communism in name, capitalism in practice). But it also doesn't seem to be fully, nor is it capitalism. We often tease that only communism can save China, but again, only China can save communism.

@@KF-zb6gi Tbf, its not real communism at all. The CCP calls it socialism with Chinese characteristics. It's basically capitalism except the government itself participates in private commerce + very good public services. What I mean is that individuals can start companies (in fact its encouraged to do so) but most of the major sources of production have some degree of government control or ownership. That's why I think terms like communism and capitalism are pointless. All countries are going to have socialist and capitalist elements. i.e. the idea of retirement is 100% communist, yet America has it. I think the main reason why China is so successful is due to its centralized power. They don't have to worry about local/state laws and disagreements as well as deal with 20 different private enterprises at once just to build a railway. In decentralized economies, resources pass through multiple hands, each taking their own cut of profit and marking prices up for the next. Whereas in China, one party owns it all, greatly reducing all the intermediary costs.

I have been working in China for 5 years and have been to many places. China is very big and diverse. Going to a province is like going abroad. It is a completely unfamiliar environment and accent. The food and culture are also different. Here you don’t need to drive. You can go everywhere in the city. There are all modes of transportation, and shared electric cars are available everywhere, saving you walking everywhere. Of course, if you choose to go to some remote mountainous areas, it is best to drive. There are so many mountains there that you can’t imagine. For those who have never been there, I would like to say don’t believe anything. The descriptions in the Western media are basically false. Yes, China's transportation is very developed because the population is too large, mainly concentrated in the central and eastern regions. There are at least millions of square kilometers in western China that have not been developed and constructed, and the population there is sparse. So the China you see in the West is not the real China. Many of them are edited later, and some even replace them with Southeast Asia to brainwash the people. According to the population distribution, at least 50% of China is undeveloped. It means that except for a few heavy industrial cities, China has almost no pollution. Westerners should understand what I said, so every time they say that China is seriously polluted, I want to laugh. The pollution of a single heavy industrial city represents the entire China, 😂😂😂 people who believe it How stupid.

China's high speed rail is simply "out of this world" for those in the West who have never experienced it. The more you use it for distance travel, or for any travel in fact, the more comfortable and relaxing you feel without a car. An odd experience for those of us who cannot live without a daily driver (car). You ironically feel freerer. ...and when you get home you miss the easy accessibility to these transportation infrastructures and loss of health benefits from the additional walking. A recent 5 week trip to China from Shanghai across a number of regions and cities to the Gobi Desert and end of the Great Wall in the West really exposes you to the array of transportation options available to you. All the Metros we used in various cities were outstanding, easy to get around, and trains were always on time. Only drawback for some older stations is the lack of escalator access, though elevators for those with disabilities where frequently found. A special "callout" is for Chongqing's combined Metro and light rail system. It literally goes over, under, and through nearly everything including a "noted" station inside a building (now a tourist attraction) and I think they have the deepest line in the country. Escalator after escalator... Fastest high speed rail run was from Wuhan to Shanghai at slightly over 215 MPH, close to the 350 KM rating. China's "Inter-Province" highway, expressway system is the largest in the world and the quality of the road surfaces we drove on were near perfectly maintained with regular service areas for fuel, charging your EV, food and souvenirs. :-) Did have to slow down and follow several Yak herders on the road in the Tibetan region for a few minutes. We drove long stretches in the West to the Gobi. In the city and need a ride? Either use a GPS map application similar to Google Maps or better yet just order a ride share or taxi using the WeChat app. Incredibly convenient. Many of the taxis and ride-share cars were EV's. Bike shares are all over but for most cities the bike path is shared with motorscooters and many are adjacent to the pedestrian sidewalk making for an occastional "close call" in congested areas. In smaller towns taxis can be 3-wheel 125cc motorcycles with a cab for 3, maybe 4 with kids. Great for getting everywhere faster with the growing auto congestion in these smaller towns and cities. They know the shortcuts! BTW, both urban and long-distance buses are easy to access, cheap and reliable In China there's ALWAYS some form of transportation to get around whether in a metropolis or the most rural areas of the country.

The design and craftsmanship of the subway stations, and also that of the high speed train stations in China are absolutely impeccable and flawless. The interiors and exteriors of the trains are stunningly beautiful. In my country Fiji, a small country in the South Pacific, there are no subways or high speed trains. We only have olden types of locomotives for transporting sugarcane from one location to another. The locomotives are driven by steam. When I was a little kid my friends and I used to run after empty locomotives and jump on to the empty carriages for a ride. We could do that because the locomotives were traveling at a speed of less than 20km per hour, and thus we were able to outrun the locomotives and jump in and out of the locomotives at will with ease. Anyway this has nothing to do with the above post. I hope my country will soon have metro trains

An easy way of comparison is that, in NYC, if you wanna go from Bronx to Flushing, Queens, the direct distance is 8 miles. However, if you are to take the MTA, the NYC subway, the actual traveling distance will be 16 miles, doubled. Because you have to first, travel 8 miles to Times Square, then transfer there, travel another 8 miles to Flushing, which is super inefficient.

China's subway and high-speed rail networks are built for ordinary people, especially the poor, so the fare is relatively cheap and affordable. Infrastructure has always been a huge thing to the Chinese Civilization, evident since Shang Dynasty. Then there's two ancient Chinese sayings that resonate to this and each other: "If you wish to prosper, build roads."; "To achieve the best result of your task, be sure to use the proper tools." On top of cultural resilience, the Chinese Govt consists of 70%+ engineers, the rest are educators, scientists, scholars; and every single one is experienced as they've all worked from the bottom up so they've all have inate understanding of the situations at local levels, making them efficient and quick to adapt. What many Westerners like to discount as "Totalitarian" or even "Dictatorship" is really just good and efficient governance, which is an unfamiliar concept in their own home countries.

You touched upon 2 important things that make HSR possible. Population is #1, distances to key population centers (< 700 miles) is #2. Keep in mind even with the huge population using it the Chinese train system runs at a LOSS. In the US the distance between the largest US cities (New York, LA, Chicago, and Houston) are all greater than 700 miles. The problem is most people outside the US simply can't comprehend the distances between our major population centers. We are talking from London to Iran if we compare LA to NYC. Even the fastest train won't cover the distances required between major US cities in a reasonable period. These two reasons are why HSR in the US is just not feasible or practical. Right now instead of wasting money on trains we are working on low noise supersonic planes...because with distances measured > 700 miles they supply an actual need. Even going to DisneyWorld in Orlando is > 700 miles for probably 85% of the US population. Unlike China where they have 100 cities with over a million people the US is spread out and we have less than 10 and they are far far far away from each other.

There's a lot of natural disadvantages each country has got. For example, China's North has always been dry, and China's South has always been full of rain water etc. This task of moving water from South to North has been ongoing for thousands of years.... and I think only in recent years China has got this done, partially but at least countinuous funding has been allocated to resolve this. While if you look at America, the East is always flooding, and the West of America is dry. Why don't they use the money they give to Zelenskky and Israel and move the water (from flooding) from Florida/Alabama to Utah, Vegas, California? It's not that America does not have money and resources to make this happen.... but they chose weapons over water. If a backward country like China can do it, the most advanced nation like America should be able to resolve this issue easily. Americans can then have a better life instead of pumping money to Europe or Asia and provoking other nations all the time. America should spend more time and money to improve the life of the Americans. I seriously don't understand what is the true mission of Congress and Senates...... do they all work for the Lockheed Martins or do they work for the citizen of United States?

Transportation is really efficiency of moving people around at the cheapest cost, time which is related to productivity would be part of the consideration. USA is a car centered transportation system, whereas China is public transport centered very much like Singapore. It may be too late to change American transportation system to rail with feeder buses as land is way too expensive and the construction cost too high, with car manufacturing being a key industrial lobby. In short, America is stuck in its development and perhaps only a evolution (slow) or revolution (fast) of political system can change its course. Wishing the best to the West as they struggle to find their ways way forward.

Socialism + State Capitalism + Effective Engineering and Planning did this, Imagine if China is a fully democratic laissez-faire capitalistic country, The big cities will be a big transport hub, densely populated, privatized public transportation that costs a lot for average citizens, productivity growth will be slower due to the reluctance of spending for expensive public transport. The low tier cities won't get any investment at all from transport companies, it remained backward and no incentive for profits for the companies. Breeding ground for corruption, big tender project with vague results. It would be a chaotic mess and leader would change every 4/5 years, projects come and go with no tangible result because just for a political point.

@@Harveyinchina You should be aware that videos like this will attract also negative or ill-meaning comments directed toward china either due to envy of china's rise, bruised egos, bigotry etc. They will try to find fault only or resort to peurile insults and caricatures of asians. Most ppl are unevolved especially in character and have a primitive win/lose mentality out of myopic selfishness instead of a higher mind of understanding cooperation/collaboration for the greater good. Capitalism vs communism when in truth, a combination of the two is optimal and better comprehensive across the board to address issues, not just one or the other. A common point is utilizing western tech but it is only one aspect of civilization, though very important that is not all the skills that is needed or optimal. Technology is actually a universal culture which is why the future is a global technocracy. This is something only the highest genuises as in the actual inventors of the highest calibre and evolution understand that it was meant to change the world (like tesla), not only their limited and selfish provincial or nationalistic interests who politicize only for their interests. The chinese are wiser, better strategists, planning and with better foresight. They also understand to share this tech with developing countries to assist and better themselves. Imagine if the world were to put their minds together with their advantages globally for the greater good of humanity rather than competing against those advantages and throwing shade out of egoism and insecurity, the world would be much farther ahead than it is now. Though the west believes they are advanced and evolved in every way and have nothing positive to learn from others, east asians are highly evolved in ways and aspects that they lack including their philosophy.

I lived in beijing and nyc, the big problem with beijings subway is that it needs express trains (one stop every 4th stop) and commuter rail. It takes a very long time to go from one end to the other in beijing. Same goes for shanghai and other big cities in china.

It is a good idea, but, not sure if it can be implemented. Because every 3 to 5 minutes, there is a train passing by a station. If an express train is deployed, other trains on the rail must step aside to let the express train passing, which is not sure to be doable.

@@yuminghu in new york, express trains is on the same line, but different track. So there is 2 tracks going the same direction, and each express stop has 2 platforms.
