Yes, power relations have always existed among humans but Hu wasn't exactly clubbed over the head; he was treated as though he had no status and the public should be made aware that he was shown to be discarded as though his presence was beyond meaningless. This is fairly mild as far as The Purge goes, but it's very specific power play in a country that has its own power plays stretching back thousands of years to the Warring States period and Qin Shihuang. Not everyone would choose to display their contempt for a previous ruler in quite this way. Just saying.

The document has some hard evidence that indicates what Xi did was probably a coup, that might cause Hu might say something to the public. Xi thought Hu potentially could stop his coup (Hu may not have any thought of doing that). What Xi did was to order his guard (the mask guy) to prevent Hu potentially stop Xi's coup. Other people on the same row realized right away what was really going on. But all of them are scared of getting severely punished later on. Any actions including eye contacts at that time from anyone could be used as evidence later to against that person, the consequence could be as serious as a lifetime jail or even death sentence. How do things amount to this? Ruling by fear and intimidation, to the point of publicly ousting a previous leader and everyone else is stoic and unmoved? I am grateful to live somewhere where politics is not like this. Leadership should not be afforded this kind of power, should not be able to oppress and silence opposition in this way. And leaders should have term limits - it feels like cementing power over a long time is synonymous with corruption and dictatorship.
