Hitchens is one of my personal heroes. Carl Sagan taught me it about the size and vastness of the universe, and about the power of the scientific method. Hitchens forced me to confront my religious beliefs honestly, and morally, and judge them accordingly. My religious beliefs could not stand up to that scrutiny. I'm forever grateful to Hitch for that.

Mark Mullen Here's the thing. You don't know that "the bridge is out" and you don't know what lies ahead on the road. How can I say this? Because you don't know something about the future that I don't know. Why would a hypothetical god reveal some truth to you and deny it to me? And which god are you talking about anyways? There are over 4200 religions on this planet and over 60.000 different branches of christianity alone, and you mean to tell me that you've chose just the right one?! I've never been that confident in my life myself. "Jews and Christian's believe that God spoke to Moses on Mt. Sinai." Israeli archelogy haven't found one shred of evidence that any migration of the jewish people ever took place here. What else? "God has given you free will. If you choose to ignore His laws, whether it's gravity, or sin, you shall die." How is that free will?!? I'll let you choose, but if you don't do as I please I will torture and kill you??? Be serious for one second. You know and feel that there's something obscure about this. This is not free will, it's extortion. This is something a mafia boss would say. "Be my friend or I'll blow your head off". This is non-sense and can not ever be believed by a thinking honest person.

S Baldrick You reminded me of a piece which Hitch was fond of quoting - “And do you think that unto such as you A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew God gave a secret, and denied it me? Well, well-what matters it? Believe that, too!” ― Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Mark Mullen "I can see Hitch now, kneeling before King Jesus, crying like a baby for mercy. And Jesus will just say, depart from you, you who practice lawlessness. " Bullshit. If such an unlikely event ever took place, Hitch would never kneel for anyone. I know it probably gives you a hard on thinking that your endlessly merciful and loving god is an merciless ass and sends someone to ethernal torture. Even when I was a christian I hated the thought of it, I'm glad it's not true and obviously man made. If this thought gives you pleasure, you're a fucking disturbed mind. Hitchens said he would rather have the discussion about what's right and what's true with philosophers and thinkers while he was alive, why would he then want to spend ethernity with religious fanatics? kzbin.info/www/bejne/opislH2Ybc5no5o

Noah built a boat. Everyone made fun of him. When the rain started, and the water started to rise, everyone asked to be let on the boat. Noah wouldn't let them on the boat, and let them all drown. Science is a boat that can save you from illness, heal you when you're injured, make you warm, keep you safe, entertain you, and yes, save you from drowning in a flood. Science lets everyone on the boat, even those who don't believe in it.

Docktor Jim How do you believe that a few people (family members) were able to repopulate the world in 4000 short years to a number approaching 8,000,000,000? How do you suppose that during the time of the flood, we have documents from Asian and Persian civilizations that not only survived but never recorded such an event? How do you suppose that we can trace the genetic genes back 7,000,000 years an never find evidence that almost all life on earth was almost wiped out? How do you reckon that we can find evidence of the mass extinction of dinosaurs from ash layers buried 65,000,000 but cannot find evidence in the fossil record or in the soil of a mass flood? How do you believe that a boat full of approximately 1200 species became an earth filled with 1,000,000,000s of species in just a few thousand years without evolution? We know that SOME Christians consider the flood story to be real, but not only is there ZERO evidence (which would be easy to find for something so recent) but ALL of the evidence points that this never occured

My mum died a few weeks before Christopher and I loved her very much. However It was only when I heard Christopher had died I cried a small tear. My mum was a great woman who was a nurse and helped a small few people in her lifetime. Christopher helped millions of people understand that small voice that quietly rankled in the back of their minds during religious devotions. More importantly he pointed out to those of us that never believed that the terror we felt as small children from the veiled threats thrown at us every week were not real, were immoral and as laughably pathetic a coercion the human mind can come up with. Finally he taught us all that there are many of us.

While I agree with the others that your mother's worth is not measured relative to anybody else's, I must say, you expressed this beautifully. That rankling, and that fear-based agenda were something I grew up with and eventually abandoned, to become the happiest I've ever been. I'm only discovering Hitchens now, after I've come to these conclusions, and his work, even so, is still a major balm to my mind.

Christoper Hitchens you can move me to tears, Even has a small child I felt that there was no God, for years its been a thing to cover up, you were very far from perfect Chris but by goodness you were a human being. I nearly died 3 years ago, there was no fear, I knew the medical people would try their very best for me, I survived, but one day I will die, but at that moment a child will be born to start their life. If we can feel empathy with other people who have their own precious lives, Then maybe we might be getting somewhere. Loved the guys face when Chris joked about 72 Mother in laws.

I come from a religious family and went to Sunday school from as early as I can remember. I listened to what my pastor said about the Bible and its characters and tried to learn from those stories. When I was old enough, I decided to try reading the Bible for myself. I read it cover to cover when I was 12 years old. By the end of Exodus, I was an atheist. I never went back to church after that. This is a true story. Nothing frees a person's mind faster than just reading these religious texts and thinking about their ridiculousness.
@KiSs0fd3aTh
@KiSs0fd3aTh 9 жыл бұрын
That's actually wrong. Reading all the horrible things in the Bible doesn't prove that a god doesn't exist, hence you don't become an atheist just by that. It proves though that the so called god isn't a loving fatherly figure, but more like a sadomazochistic dictator and anyone saying otherwise has either not read the bible or lying

2 out of your 3 links are facking christian religious bullshit sites, so plz, gtfo, and they are wrong. Alpha centauri IS 4 light years away (4,3 to be precise). But that's besides the point. The point is, you have no fucking clue what atheism is. We don't have a high priest cause we don't have anything to believe. Proving that hitchens was a charlatan doesnt take ANY credibility frm atheistm at the slightest. Atheism is NOT a religion based on an ancient book and some priests, so you can't discredit atheism but proving that their book is wrong or theirs priests are charlatans. That only happens in religions, because religions claims to have the answer, and its a DOGMA, it can't be changed, so proving ANYTHING (even the slightest detail) wrong in the bible, means the whole structure goes down

I would sacrifice my left arm to just be able to hear Hitchens' view on current events going on in the world such as the U.S election and the refugee situation in Europe. Never have I heard anyone that is better with reasoning, logic, and expressing thoughts in such an articulate way. I am still in the process of reading all your books, but I'm glad I have these to my disposal as I discovered you a tad bit too late to hear you speak in person. +Jorick Mr If I were to take a guess, he'd probably say something along the lines of: America's current presidential nominees are a collective disaster, and that's an understatement. Donald Trump can say whatever the hell he wants and the blind fools following him wouldn't bat an eye. We've already seen that they would agree to anything Hitler said as long as you say "Trump said it." He's a fucking joke of a degenerate, and that's insulting to degenerates. Hillary Clinton... * looks over glasses * enough said. Bernie Sanders is doing for economic illiterates what religion does for the naive; making great assertions and false claims of a promise land that could only be attained using magic and giving everything you have to his organization. Ted Cruz rode the Jesus Train on the backs of the Tea Party in Texas, that's enough of a joke as it is. John Kasich; possibly the least threatening to the American people, yet the American people have made him the least threatening to the other candidates. To put it mildly, the 2016 election cycle is a shit storm. (This is just my impression of what he'd say, so no one reading this should get upset, this is just me doing "Hitch" as Hitch as I can be.) Honestly, I'm not sure what he would've said about the refugee situation. I'm not informed enough about ALL of the laws and incidences that have occurred nor can I gauge how Hitchens would've taken it. But I feel he'd say that there is too much accommodation and not enough regulation in regards to telling these people that they are not above the law, as well as saying that they need to tighten up this laissez-faire "all are welcome" policy that most countries are taking.

Hitchens replied-yes, but it gives off such a magnificent glow. I miss Hitchens. Sadly, his own lifestyle did him in. But we can always go to KZbin for encouragement. Christopher's statement about Josef Fritzl always gets to me. I think it's just the anger and passion in his voice, especially when he says "nothing" was done to help Elisabeth Fritzl out of that situation by a divine power. It shuts down any argument that if a god does exist that he has any sort of morals.

I only wish he was still here to comment on this U.S election. What he would have had to say on THAT topic.....lol.....probably the greatest mind of our generation.....no disrespect to Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Steven Hawking and Richard Dawkins....although they are ALL great scientists and Hitch was "only" a social commentator and journalist he was an incredibly intelligent man who ALWAYS said the way it was!!....Miss him terribly!

almost 4 years now... Religious people are waiting for their next "savior" to appear. Thinking people spend their days putting their wanna be saviors to the test. Hitchens was thoroughly criticized, Dawkins is thoroughly criticized, Harris, Segan, Degrasse Tyson, Nye, Krauss, Hecht, Forrest, all of them endure relentless criticism and endure it openly and with pleasure. The key to our advancement is the open and honest debate of essential topics.

Richard Spikman Problem is that all to many of those types are all to eager for the next coming so they can watch all us sinners suffer while they float away on clouds of glory because only they are "worthy". And this is the kind of so called morality their faith brings out, simply disgusting. This is the reason we need the likes of those great thinkers and debaters to try and bring some out of their mental wasteland and into the real world that actually does exist.

Dan Kidd u started it yourself , First u decided to comment on something which was completely different , then you finished with an insult , so dont get all almighty , you said it first , now you are a believer , its obvious , you couldnt stand someone talking about a non believer . stop pretending please , if you insult a person you should be able to stand the salt back otherwise you are just being a true Christian or muslim , if you know what I mean ;)

Dan Kidd so should I talk about my educational background as well now ? dude seriously talking big doesnt mean anything , that is what you do best , just a simple look at all the main religions reveals how stupid they are , and a person of knowledge like you should know better that the lack of evidence doesnt mean we can conclude on the existence of a deity (which doesnt have a single shred of evidence to support it ) . again I would like you suggest you to think more critically. ask yourself dont be a sheep , just because everyone believes in something it doesnt mean u gotta believe in it too , now about your education i have one thing for you : your school is obviously one of the best but that doesnt mean you know the best , I hold a MA from one the best universities in my country but that doesnt mean I know everything but I unlike you live by one simple rule , read read read . I still have a long way to go , even if I get accepted for PhD course I know that i know nothing and I should not MUST read more and learn more . we can argue forever , but Im pretty sure its not a constructive one .by the way you have no idea how it is to live in an Islamic country so please dont open that door , Thanks .
