On the physics that were mentioned: “flying faster than a certain speed would kill an organic pilot” it’s not the speed that kills, it is the acceleration that kills. A steady acceleration can get you to whatever speed you want. Any acceleration causes a force to be experienced. A constant velocity, aka speed, is non lethal to all organics. Bursts of acceleration cause an impulse force, busts of high acceleration cause a high impulse force and that impulse force is what shreds the internals of organic pilots. Yes the star fighters go “fast” in a straight line, but their turning, or maneuverability, is why droids can take out organic piloted star fighters. The organic pilots get flanked because they can’t maneuver at the same acceleration

Furthermore, there is often the implicit assumption that unmanned star fighters are robust enough to withstand the Gs that say an air to air missile can. A fighter/starfighter is much more structurally complex than a missile and has some components that are more fragile than others. Remember, 20Gs is 20 times the stress on ALL parts, internal and external, simultaneously. And being able to tolerate acceleration in one axis of flight does not entail being as robust in another, much less multiple axis simultaneously.

Inertia dampener renders "high G's" irrelevant for organic pilots, if we've established that fighters can have hyperdrives in Star wars, why wouldn't human pilots be able to fly as fast as droids? If its implied that their dampeners are strong enough for hyperspace jumps? Also, I hate filling in blanks for incompetent writers but one would assume that Clone pilots would have their reflexes and overall constitution enhanced for space combat, Star wars writers have a tendency of projecting our current world realities and limitations to the highly advanced type 3 civilization that is the star wars civilization/s, a good example is human aging in Star Wars, why the hell do humans in Star wars live as long as humans in 21st century Earth? with the collective advanced technology of thousands of species working together, you'd think humans in Star wars would be able to live forever, without having to resort to cloning or cybernetics (this is a general theme in Star wars, the writers limit themselves to our current real-world limitations even while depicting a space-faring civilization that has reached type 3 status, if a type 3 civilization decided to rely on organic pilots I'm sure that they would have figured out a workaround for evening the odds with droid crafts). Frankly, there's no justifiable reason for the Republic not to have their own droid army to compliment the clones in space and in the ground, they have a far larger economy than the CIS and we see Republic battle droids in the Mandalorian, so we know that they are not against the idea.

Anything in war that establishes a pattern can be turned against whatever uses it to set that pattern. If Droid fighters like to make lots of very quick sharp turns often all the more imaginative clones gotta do is sucker them into doin just that an then the pilots pick them off. All the Clone Navy needed was some kinda gunship frigate designed for HEAVY space combat and designed in anticipation of taking on alot of Droid fighter even the best ones by the squadrons and wings and simply be able to shred most of it in relatively small numbers.. Then things wouldn't be so bad. Even turned on the Droid Navy that way
@Confused_surprise3 жыл бұрын
You have a point, but I disagree. The droids have three crucial advantages in space battles : speed, maneuverability, and number. I think the ARC 170 was the best chance for clones to survive this kind of battle, because these ships had a rear gunner for dealing with the vultures. But still, this is far from being enough for a decent chance of survival. If the clones had only gunships like you say, it would just be a bigger version of the ARC 170 with more turrets, but this would mean more clones inside this ship, and more deaths for every gunship down. Plus, I think the vultures were also used for kamikaze attacks, so if these gunships were big enough the droids could easily destroy it (not only with kamikaze attacks, but also a bunch of missiles would be enough to deal with them) For me, there is no way the republic can have the advantage if they only rely on starfighter combat. That's why they prefered attacking the CIS capital ships, because destroying an aircraft carrier is the best way to deal with the aircrafts.
@robertagu55333 жыл бұрын
@@Confused_surprise not necessarily, speed, bein agile don't make all the difference. An more then in a few cases in real life way outnumbering a foe has counted for absolutely nothing as the smaller force either STILL won or inflicted too much damage for the other side to be near the threat it was after. All you mentioned if anything was an indication of just how good the clone pilots in general were at least those trained from the start to be combat pilots. Or all the reasons mentioned woulda wiped the clone navy out early on probably costing the war. I was thinking, something bit more bigger then a fighter, with better fighters or much upgraded arcs supporting existing arcs, however said frigate/gunship, etc is still small enough to play the role an probably not as big as a venerator or ISD. Probably bout the size of a Correlian blockade runner or similar is usually what they use for the role. Alone needs done is heavily armor the craft, heavily armed with a range of weapons that negate numbers advantages an such. Clones were generally better period at adaptation and strategy and innovation an the like. This with a crew that knows what its doin from good training or experience will easily crush throw away cheap forces that have no such adaptability nearly every time. Like in Star wars we ACTUALLY saw this in WW2. We upgraded our craft and gave all our pilots decent training even at beginning levels and then their desire to win, survive or both take over from there. Just a bunch of my random observations
@Confused_surprise3 жыл бұрын
@@robertagu5533 I agree, but now I realise the real problem of this project of gunship (I'll call it gunship for more simplicity) is money. I don't know how wealthy the republic was, but making a fleet of thoose well armed and well armored gunships with a professionnal crew would be expensive, and long to make. The CIS method of "launching thousands of cheap fighters at the same time" is effective. This is what happened in WW2 with bombardments : hundreds of bombers launched at the same time in order to harrass the ennemy with a force so gigantic it would be impossible to contain. Against this kind of attack, if you don't have unlimited ressources like the CIS had, it is impossible to stand forever. This is how germany lost ww2, because the allies launched dozens of bombing raids. The german were better pilots, with great and efficients interceptors, but they were no match for the gigantic army of their ennemy. From my point of view (without any intervention of Darth sidious), the Republic would have ended like germany. They might be better in 1v1, but they would be crushed under billions of "cheap soldiers". That's an interresting topic we are talking of !

@@Confused_surprise yeah both sides basically employed BOTH tactics now that I think of it an you mentioned that. Efficient, highly effective even lethal fighters and elite pilots with HUGE bomber assaults to finally turn tables an crush the Nazis. Was sorta the idea the GAR would probably need early to help stabilize things and as they could an gained ground an the resources with it build and design the craft as braincells FINALLY fired and they realize they need a highly efficient and effective counter craft, probably a mix of big anti fighter platforms and upgraded an better fighters to help even an in some cases turn things around. Which was like you said an im saying just to revisit it is what they did. I'd upgraded the arcs personally to have a more agile and tougher version at least as the firepower was already fairly heavy for its type. It just needed to either be hard as hell to ACTUALLY shoot down due to plenty of armor and even ecm measures in this theoretical update or a just as well armed and decently armored version that was just either just as reasonably fast but designed to be agile of needed. Even against considerably greater quality droids while the bigger gunships can hang back or press in and set auto cannons and some artillery made to counter mass attacks to suppress an basically play space machine gun on the CIS. Which since Palps intended for them to be his end game victor anyways if needed he'd ordered something like this anyways if it got bad enough.. probably facepalming at how dumb Republic leaders were for not realizing they needed to do it without his direction.

One other factor that mitigated the danger to clone pilots somewhat, was naval gunnery. In general clone gunners on capital ships were more dangerous than droid counterparts. So oddly, the two safest areas for a clone pilot in any space battle were near their ships and near the enemy ships. Droidships may have been faster and more maneuverable, but they weren't more skilled. Near obstacles and structures, an organic pilot's unpredictability came back into play, as well as the fact that even droidships would have to slow down when flying near capital ships.

I always assumed that, since most of the star wars franchise is inspired by WW2, the clone pilots were a nod to the RAF pilots who only had an average life expectancy of 4 weeks.

Anyone who’s played ALOT of the old school battlefront 2 and to an extent the new one, my fellow ARC-130 pilots feel the pain of being out menouvered and being such a big target against such a tiny target. But it’s a space stuka so it’s obv my favorite starship to fly. Sure I’m a big slow target and the droids are way smaller, but I’ve got the style points, the sounds points, and god damn do those cannons pack a wallop

There isn't a lot of specifics on mechanical strength, but in the real world many people think drones will replace humans. At the moment however, humans can take on G speeds that the the jets themselves can't. As in many jets have limitations to protect the craft from breaking up in a hard turn. Machines themselves have computer components to control other mechanical components which all have their own limitations to extreme speed changes. I suppose in Star Wars the CIS worked out a system where an engine mount doesn't break off when a sharp bank occurs, but I wish there was some mention of it.

They didn't have to put in cockpits or life Support so i guess that left more room for reinforced parts.

@@ucitymetalhead that one fighter that is a ball with the 3 guns that is super fast has what looks like a standard battledroid which is a bit weird bc those are the most agile. I can thow it up to SciFi though.

Thank you, it seems like the implicit assumption in many channels is that removing the pilot out will allow a fighter or warship to achieve air to air missile G-tolerance.

Separatists: OK we will have fighters, Air superiority fighters, and bombers, that should cover all areas. Republic: ok so umm, a bomber, yeah, an a multirole, and umm another multirole, and a fighter but only till the end of the war.

I think that 1 vs 1 a clone could take a Vulture droid in a dogfight most of the time. Maybe even with a Tri-fighter that would also hold most of the time. But with 5 vs 1, the clone has a very bad situation. Unless he can kill them quickly, and I mean at least 1 on the first pass and another on the second, he's going to be rinsed badly. The Republic could've gone down the route of BVR combat with missiles. You see, a missile has the same advantage of a droid of much higher G tolerances, plus the added bonus of no self preservation protocols. If a Y wing or an ARC-170 were refitted with missile launcher pods with dozens of small, agile and fast missiles, it could've made the battle easier for the clones.

they fought mostly in space and that means no gravity which means basically you can go any speed and they went into hyperspace so with the logic they would die every time they went into hyperspace

Not so much flying at speeds, but changing directions. I'll urge everyone to find a way to watch Moonlight Mile Season 2 because unlike any other sci-fi or anime it showed exactly how physics would work in space with manned craft.

Well I mean if you've seen these hard-core space battles where it's a cluster fuck of ships being shot and you make it out by the skin of your teeth you'll definitely live in fear of ever having to do it again. I'd rather be on the ground fighting droids than in the air with my life almost entirely dependent on luck.

Are there any Laat type fighters? Multiple gunners and a single pilot seem like an interesting fix to a outnumbered scenario, especially since gunners wouldn't need flight training
@geetslys3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but their canonicity (within Legends) is disputable - Gunship fighters and gunship bombers were both a thing in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds

Only problem I have with this video is the speed of ships there is no g forces in space so they should be fine going the same speed as droids (just looked it up the a wing is much faster then the vulture droid so that is a thing)

Seems similar to the reasons real war pilots will often suffer with bad nerves. Bomber pilots in WW2 would often spend 6 hours or more just flying to their target. Once over the target, they were bombarded by AA flak, and enemy fighters. All they could do was keep flying straight, and hope they didn't get shot down before dropping their bombs. After that, they still had to make it back to base in one piece. Truly a nerve racking job. Imagine being stuck in a flying whale, being shot at from everywhere, with no escape. You're only chance is to be lucky, or to get blown to pieces by flak.

How is it that they could could keep organic beings unphased through hyper space (light speed or faster) - both entering and existing (exiting as a nearly immediate stop) but not fighter pilots in sub-light speeds?

I find it strange that the republic never expanded into shockwave weapons to take out clusters of vulture droids, smaller mine based ones for fighters and massive ones for capital ships.
@iyzu84133 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it then be smarter to build like a corvette that could farm through starfighters and only use pilots for the defense of the capital ships? That would also solve the pilot problem and the Republic could focus their venators on the separatist capital ships or was the armament of the Venator too weak for that?
