Comedies used to have regular people central to the narrative. And by "regular," I mean people that were middle class, working class, working poor, or even people in poverty. Classic underdogs.
As the motion picture industry has become dominated by the ranks of the wealthy elite, their progeny, and graduates from the most expensive and elite schools, their perspective has narrowed. They do not relate to the classes below them and do not hire people from these classes. You can see this in the TV and films that are made. Like our political leaders, they are out of touch with the vast majority of us.
