Makes a good calendar slogan on your bedside table, but in reality for most people going after an amazing life leads to the loss of their beloved comfort zone and dangerous destabilization of their functioning basic lives.

Some of the biggest cash game pots and most important tournament pots I’ve ever won have started with the thought “oh boy this is gonna get ugly”, fully grasping that, and then just strapping in for the mental ride and leaning entirely on logic and reason

Phil, I've been following you and listening to your material for over 10 years. Member of bluefire and RIO. There is general wisdom at the bottom of a lot of the things you speak about. As a person with a deep interest in philosophy and religion it would be very interesting to hear more about your personal sources of inspiration and life philosophy. Sort of detached from poker for once. Where you get your ideas, schools of thought, what you admire, what you read etc. Thank you very much! Daniel

Weird Comment Alert: Stepping out of my comfort zone, I am not even gay and I would let this guy do what he wants to me. I am joking, but serious too. I always had this thought experiment of if I were a woman, what type of man would I trust. I was not surprised at all to see this guy wearing a wedding ring. I am an older guy who has acquired some wisdom over the years so nothing in this video really stood out to me, but I would love to see more videos like this because this younger guy could probably teach me to look at some things in life differently.

I like the way you articulate this Phil. Really, we all like to think we are making emotionless decisions at the tables, but often times we are just labeling a decision that’s most comfortable to us in that moment as the “right” or “smart” decision, when we are really just playing into avoiding being put into potentially uncomfortable spots.

I feel a strong urge to post a second comment on this. The internet is filled to the brim with advice along the lines of "you really don't want to re-open the betting" with, say, draws on the turn where you can be priced out by a reraise, and marginal made hands on the river. My inituitive and natural state of game play is, or rather always was, to allow myself to step outside the comfort zone, as you talk about. But the be careful about re-opening advice has sneaked, to the point of becoming a giant leak. I've readjusted and tried it out in MTTs, despite mainly being a cash game player. 4 final tables in 20 MTTs w 1k+ runners. Cannot wait to get to the cash tables. If I ever run into you in Vegas, I'm buying you the biggest beer, there is to be found!

what's funny is living in nyc has made me 100% okay with confrontation. I used to be a west coast softie, but now if my order is completely wrong I will definitely say something. not in an aggressive way, but just to get the right thing and give feedback about how they didn't get it right. same thing goes for seeing something on the street and speaking up. I also thought it was funny that you brought up escalators, my mom refuses to ever take an escalator (even at airports lol!) and has definitely worn off on me. a lot of times it can be faster even.

taking the stairs is NOT healthier than the escalator. going up and down stairs too much takes a serious toll on your knees. this "more excercise is always better" fallacy needs to die. we like comfort because comfort is actually healthier most of the time.
