While I've never been much of a conceptual artist myself, I feel like it comes as close to artistic purity as anything. When you remove everything but purpose, you get to the heart of self-expression.

Very well said! I just find it really interesting. Even though I don’t write a ton of it myself, it can be super useful. Thanks for watching!

Great perspective! A lot of "minimalist" music does this for me, like Terry Riley's "In C" and his early tape loops stuff. And I'm also really fond of Cage. But I like your idea that lots of things can be a "concept" for a new compositional idea. You don't need to end up with something either minimalist on the one hand or challenging to listen to on the other.

Thanks for the comment! The whole idea that conceptual music didn’t have to sound one way or another didn’t occur to me right away for some reason. But once it did, things really opened up. Also, Terry Riley’s “In C” is a great piece.

are you familiar with graphic scores? I recently learned about them and I have been enjoying making them, and then figuring out how to perform them afterwards. i would love to hear your take on this topic.

Graphic scores are awesome! They really let the player in on the composition process. I think what I really like about them is that you can get totally different results from the same score with different performances. Send me a link of one of your scores, I’d love to take a look at it.
