China suffered huge casualties in WWII fighting against 2 million Japanese troops, the US only hit around 100,000 Japanese troops and got the biggest credit for 2 atomic bombs. In the international community, it is generally recognized that the United States and the Soviet Union defeated Japan, while China, which contributed the most and sacrificed the most, is forgotten. And many of the Japanese war criminals who killed and tortured Chinese got away with it, which is why China and Japan haven't completely reconciled like Germany and France, and why many Chinese still hate Japan. The reason is that the Japanese don't really apologize.

Qing dynasty prohibited people living near sea to disconnect them from the outside world in fear of rebellion, and the CCP is doing the exactly the same with the great firewall. Qing dynasty was very aggresive imperialists and the CCP is the same. Rebellions and crackdowns kept taking place in Qing, also in PRC: Tibetan uprising and violent crackdown, East Turkestan independence movement and genocide, smaller scale but the same story with mongols, Tienanmen massacre in 1989, prosecution of Falun Gong in 2000s, zero covid protest and silent crackdowns happening right now. Japan could not conquer China due to several reasons. Firstly, China had a much larger population and greater resources than Japan, making it difficult for Japan to fully occupy and control the country. Secondly, China had a highly motivated and determined resistance movement that utilized guerrilla warfare tactics, making it difficult for Japan to maintain control in the areas they did conquer. Thirdly, China's vast territory and difficult terrain made it challenging for Japan to successfully invade and control key areas. Additionally, Japan faced significant opposition from other world powers, including the United States, which imposed economic sanctions and ultimately entered the war against Japan. Japan also faced logistical challenges in supplying its troops, as much of China's infrastructure had been destroyed in the war. Overall, Japan's military campaign in China was ultimately unsuccessful due to a combination of strategic, logistical, and political factors.
@toy315 Жыл бұрын
@Rese Cema At that time, China had 500 million people, and Japan had 100 million people excluding (Manchuria, Korea, Taiwan). Although China had 500 million people at that time, it was fragmented. Manchuria had defected to Japan, most of the eastern provinces were occupied, and Guangxi warlords were not controlled by ROC. If China had completed reunification at that time, Japan would have no chance. Japan was seizing the period of China's separatist revolution, and if it missed this opportunity, it would never lose the chance to conquer China

So basically: - China was still in the midst of a civil war for more than a decade when the Japanese invaded. - The two parties in China fought less frequently but not fully united fighting against Japan. - The KMT, led by Cheng Kai Shiek came into power through assassinating favorite leaders to take over the KMT party after Sun Yat Sen's Death. - Cheng and his wife was super good in getting aid from the US, but most of the money went into their own personal pockets and bought a whole block properties in New York. - Mao Zedong was actually part of the original founder of the KMT party!!! - Because Cheng was so corrupted, massacred civilians, and ignored the nation's concerns, the people started supporting the Communist. USA was the same, knowing that Cheng wasn't a good guy still supported him, because they hated anything communism, which still holds true to today's government. - Japan massacred millions of civilians, including babies. They then abandoned Japanese kids in China after they lost the war. The kids were adopted by the local Chinese people. - China with a disunited army were equipped with spoons and forks to fight a well equipped Japanese soldiers, including warplanes, tanks, and other advanced weapons - Despite all this, the Japanese still had some success in the Northeast China, but significantly failed the further they expanded to the southern territories after two years of invasion. - When the Japanese feel they have a strong army, they will start invading other countries, like they did twice to Korea and would've succeeded if China didn't help. They also invaded China twice, Russia once, and the rest of SEA. - But today, animes, mangas, and as a US ally/vassal, people are led to believe that they've changed even till today where their government is still led by direct descendants of war criminals who led the offensive invasion and massacre. -Okay....Good luck!

Japan's attempt to conquer China was a daunting task, and ultimately unsuccessful due to a variety of reasons. One of the major factors was China's sheer size and population, which made it difficult for Japan to maintain control over the vast territory. Additionally, the Chinese had a strong sense of nationalism and were willing to fight fiercely to protect their homeland. Japan also faced challenges due to the harsh terrain, extreme weather conditions, and the guerrilla tactics employed by the Chinese resistance fighters. Moreover, Japan's military resources were stretched thin due to their ongoing battles in other parts of Asia and the Pacific. In the end, Japan's attempt to conquer China proved to be a costly and ultimately futile endeavor.

From mid 1941 to the end of WW2, the borders between the Soviet Union and China were closed off and no Allied supply could get through to China that way because the Soviets had a pact with the Japanese. With the coastal regions also under Japanese control, the only route Allied supplies and weapons could be delivered to China was through British Burma. That was why it was so critical for China and the other Allied powers to keep the Japanese away from Burma. @@tvgerbil1984 The hump was the main source of logistic supporting during the period of 1942~1945, but its capacity only became significant until Oct 1944. After USA moved away from Operation Matterhorn in March 1945, finally started to focus on supplying the Chinese army, the war was near to the end. British presence in Burma was mainly for protecting its base in Bangladesh for counter-attack later in 1944, not for China. @alehaim Жыл бұрын
Some notes from me: You mentioned after the describing the battle of Changsha and how the Japanese never conquered it, which is incorrect as it fell to Japan in 1944 with the Ichi-Go offensive. An additional thing I feel should have been mentioned was how the Japanese in total attacked Changsha four times. First in 1939 with the initial failed offensive, a second offensive between september and october in 1941, a third spoiling offensive between december 1941 and January 1942 in order to stop the Chinese from reinforcing the British in Hong Kong, and finally the fourth attack in 1944 in which the city finally fell. Regarding the Ichi-Go offensive, it wasn't exactly that Chiang didn't expect an offensive on the main front, but more of him expecting it to come from the south and not the main front, if this video by Potential History on the matter is correct: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmXddWefqLpgmdU (Alternatively it could have been mentioned on this video as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q16keoKKftd8Z9k). As such not only did the KMT have its best forces spread out in Xinjiang and Burma, additionally the Chinese forces left to defend the main Hunan front were instead initially prepared for an offensive from a different direction. Regarding Joseph Stillwell, he was basically the wrong person for the China front, with him sowing distrust of the Chinese towards the US, he almost caused some of the best Chinese troops in Burma to be destroyed under his command and he even wanted to coup the Chiang and turn China to an US puppet, before his dismissal, as told in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inOxi6R5aM2Sj5Y. In short Stillwell was a good army driller who was good at drilling the troops and training them basically, but he sucked as much as one could while leading troops in combat and basically everything that he was assigned to do. In the end the Chinese would only really begin enjoying more success once Stillwell was replaced by the much more fit for the role Wedemeyer. Connecting to Wedemeyer, and the late war Chinese counter offensives, this US army history paper describing said late war offensives: history.army.mil/html/books/072/72-39/CMH_Pub_72-39.pdf. Now to summarise the things told in this paper; following the appointment of Wedemeyer to leading the US mission in China, an ALPHA force planned to encompass began to be trained, which would constist of 36 US trained and advised divisions, which was a compromise owing to Chiang's fear that the communists would attempt to convert the troops in the inevitable civil war. These troops began to be trained under the supervision of Wedemeyer and thanks to his efforts in building up positive relations with the Chinese, he succeeded in having all of the Chinese troops of the ALPHA force being placed under US guidance, with all Chinese officers who refused to follow American instructions/guidance ending up getting replaced. As these forces were training in south western China, Ichi-Go was launched and the ALPHA force was in no way ready, due to which Wedemeyer relied on Chenault's 14th airforce to bomb Japanese supply lines in order to buy time for training and supplying the ALPHA force, combined with the Burma offensive and completion of the Ledo/Stillwell road promising expanded supply shipments from India. Thanks to the disruption efforts the Chenaults fourteenth airforce, the Japanese attack on western Hunan which you mentioned already struggling from disrupted supply. Meanwhile the Chinese troops of the ALPHA force had thanks to Wedemeyer's efforts become much better supplied with reliable food and ammo supply, in addition to an improved supply situation allowing for continued operations of the fourteenth airforce and better radio integration making communication more efficient than before. The Japanese attacked western Hunan near the Chihchiang airfield in January 1945, where the Chinese forces lacking the full training due to time constraints from the Japanese offensive were forced to face the Japanese attacking force. Following a counteroffensive plan being approved by Chiang, the battle became a masterpiece of Chinese defensive strategy, where the Japanese force attacked the force in the center, while the flanking armies moved behind the Japanese force to strike its rear and supplies, forcing the Japanese to eventually retreat due to their supply lines being compromised by the flanking enemy divisions and being under attack from all sides. Following this stunning success, operation Carbonado to liberate southern China was conceived where the Chinese forced spearheaded by the ALPHA force would push first the former French consession of Fort Bayard (modern day Zhanjiang) through which further supplies could be shipped through the recently liberated Philippines, followed by furhter offensives northwards, while simultaneously the Japanese were retreating already all the way to the Yangtze due to a worsening situation. I hope you are able to make a truly in depth explanation of how the Communists won the Chinese civil war in the next episode, as all the videos on it seem to describe how there was combat in Manchuria, followed by a rapid Communist push south that broke the Nationalists. I truly need a good explanation of how the communists won in China, that brings all the aspects together beautifully, and I am hoping that you can provide that.

This historical account is unfortunate between these two countries before & after ww2 , but what should be the direction in the future relationship between the two nations, is far more important for obvious reasons. If Japan proceeds to its constitutional changes without the consent of its populace for a military buildup, than China would proceed to annihilate that country in the event of hostilities, there will be no total recall of ww2 this time around.China would make sure that won’t happen despite of US backing.

So one of the main aspects of the war with china that is overlooked is the chaos of japanese politicis. In 1912 when emperor Meji died, his son was intellectually disabled leaving a massive power vacuum. While the military mainly aimed to fill this they were heavily split not only between Navy vs Army, but even within their was immense and intense factionalism. The functional result is that from 1912 all the way until 1940 when the imperial family made a serious effort to recentralize control, the Japanese leadership was insanely divided and in constant disputes and competition. The majority of military operations throughout this time were not deliberately planned long term invasions, but mostly small segmented decisions made by specific factions, with high command trying to do what they could with whatever landed in their lap. For example when the radical faction failed to gain power in HQ, the leader instead got himself posted to one of the field armies on the mainland (this may have either been a consolation prize, or an effort to keep him away from Tokyo). He then conspired with the other field army on the continent to launch the invasion of Manchuria. Since this was always his aim he figured if he can't take Tokyo he would just invade china anyway. Documents found that HQ was furious, but the operations success largely blocked them from taking major action against the generals. What becomes most significant however is that by 1939 the relationship between high command and field generals was at a tipping point. So many officers kept taking action without orders, that ultimatly HQ ordered that new operations would no longer recieve support. At Kolkhan gol for example Japanese intel discovered the soviet plans, but were forbidden from providing it to the army group, essentially leaving them to be surrounded and destroyed. Along with similar actions in china, high command finally reigned in the generals, but they were left in an awkward spot; the military failures weakened the armies political position allowing the navy to gain dominance and worse they feared losing control in china again if they overinvested into the army there. This resulted in the pacific plan; instead of reinforcing the army in China proper focus on disrupting their supplies. They started with the invasion of French Indochina, but this would lead to the US cutting off oil supplies and ultimatly pearl harbor. Put in other words from late 1939 Japan largely avoided trying to directly win on the battlefield in china, sending few reinforcements and conducting very little offensive operations until 44 and that only to connect with Burma/Indochina. At peak China only had around 1/6th of the Japanese military forces.

A lot of great personal in war time are shuned from the military in peace time's/ not full scale war. The military is unfortunately the same as most jobs, you have people who are great at it, and people who shouldn't be involved in it. The military is also in terms of fitness, like the guy at the gym who worked out hard, but doesn't do it correctly that's also why so many personal have injuries due to things not done properly, and command response is normally yeah but that simulates real war conditions or it didn't happen.... lol An army of arthritic 20 year olds is a great fighting force... at least in the short term, right because they can be replaced once they die or become unusable to the military.

@michaelcao5883 Жыл бұрын
Sure if the US were to intervene hard in favor of KMT that could've changed the war, but how is that a plausible scenario? Would Stalin have allowed the USA to play in their neighborhood in 1946? It would have become a proxy war. One that the western allies are unlikely to stomach due to incredible war weariness. KMT started with significant material advantages over the communists. They proceeded to throw that lead through incompetence (which the US has witnessed throughout WW2), corruption, and lack of popular support. The countryside belonged to the communists, they could see KMT's every move, sabotage their facilities, ambush supply lines. KMT-held cities often switched loyalties, because they were only a loose coalition of warlords to begin with. With China in that state, as USA, do you really think KMT can win a proxy war against USSR-backed communists? One side is connected by rail, the other is across the Atlantic. Was it worth the cost then? at 1946?

@@michaelcao5883 USA had absolute power back then, if they wanted, they could totally beat up USSR. 50% of GDP of the whole world, and the only holder of nukes. Just go to check how much material USA provided to USSR during WW2, and how they provided the material, it's not a problem to provide same material in similar manners. Part of material Stalin provided to CCP was directly from the USA supply. Stalin was watching closely at USA's response before he took further actions. And the argument didn't start from 1946, when Marshall mediated in China and forced Chiang to make a couple key concessions, the starting point that USA decided to give up China was Yalta Conference; without USA let-go, USSR wouldn't dare to get in Manchuria. USA had its reasons to give up China, Korea and even Taiwan, until suddenly the war of Korea burst. The reason wasn't due to how smart they were, rather due to how selfish they were. Not

@Farm Ground Absolutely in terms of materiel, nuclear power, naval and air dominance, etc. Although most of these assets would only be employed to their full degree in times of total war. I'd argue that, given the moral and political implications then, the US was not willing to go back into total war state against two former allies right after winning WWII. Not because they were selfish either... we having the benefit of hindsight could see the folly of the cultural revolution/great leap forward under Mao. FDR/Truman could not. Half the world at the time supported communism as their ideology. Having just gone to World War for democracy, peace, and self-determination, how can they turn around and immediately side with an unpopular government in a major ally? To say it was a selfish decision would sell short the immense calculus of human lives at stake.

All of this is the backdrop for the current political stage in the world. It’s very important to understand this and this is the best, most concise version that I’ve seen anywhere. It helped clear up some misunderstandings in my parts, such as the believe that Chiang Kai Shek was a leader of a primarily democratic movement. Also, very interesting was to learn that Mao and the communist Chinese, while lambasting the KMT for not focusing on the Japanese, took less than 3% of the casualties in the war against Japan. Zhou En Lai later, thanked the Japanese for making their takeover of China possible- which it probably did. This is a completely inhuman perspective, but for a government that later went on to kill tens, of millions of their own citizens, the death of countless people is apparently a small price to pay for whatever your goals are. Also, I’d never heard of unit 731 before and the grotesque savagery and inhumanity of the Japanese imperial forces. Most of what I had familiar rarity with, were things like the Batan death march, and the death of allies in the Philippines, and in the road building that went on in Southeast Asia, but these were nothing compared to what happened in China. The rape of Nanjing is documented in the west, but very little of the rest of it. And much much more that have provided food for thought, but the short version is thank you. A great job. A lot of detail research went into this, and of course you could see much much more, but for people with jobs outside of academia, this was fantastic.

That’s a very hard part of understanding history. Remembering that the people inside history had their own perspective of their past. That they heard news of other counties at the time, that they had memories of events in their own lifetime’s history.

Chiang's forces were the main resistance to the Japanese invasion. The Chinese Communists only played a very small part in comparison. Also, Chiang managed to string together substanial Allied effort to help China despite very difficult circumstances. It is very doubtful the Chinese Communists could manage that if they were in charge. The main backer of the Chinese Communists was the Soviet Union and yet it was the Soviets who formed a pact with the Japanese in April 1941. The Soviets not only withdrew all aid to China but actively closed borders to prevent Allied aid reaching China through Soviet territories. China was only able to receive aid from the US through the British India - Burma - Yunnan route and the difficult flights over the Hump.

Why did Japan share a land border with Chinese in Ya'an but never launch and offensive into it? Also why did they give up offensives into Mongolia/ western china after losing 1 battle?

they had frequently attempted to charge towards xinjiang, but they were always stopped and annihilated by Ma qlique's light cavalry. Yan'an and Taiyuan were the communist and Shaanxi Qlique's last line of defense, if those two cities fell they would instantly be wiped out from the war... one could say they gave their all to protect their last line of defense as best they could, meanwhile Attacking Mongolia would only kill Japanese soldiers faster, why? because mongolia has 300 thousand soldiers who have been preparing and waiting for a long time if japan tries to attack them... not to mention the 3 million soviet troops on the border of Manchukuo have also been prepared for years to strike back at japan (I think adding 4 million trained enemy soldiers is not a bright idea dude)

Yan'an was situated in a very mountainous province, which meant that the Japanese would've found it difficult to attack. Furthermore, the neighbouring provinces occupied by the Japanese experienced the height of communist guerilla efforts, which were largely situated in northern China - the IJA simply lacked the ability to move much in these provinces due to a hostile population.

@@justacommonman5935 Sorry if I didn't make it clear by I never meant why didn't they invade Mongolia proper i meant why after battle of west suiyuan did the IJA just stop proceeding out west to China? Its not like they couldn't have tried against with more motorized infantry or tanks right. Since they attacked Changsha many times after losing why just give up on that front? they in theory if they broke through could have made contact with Xinjiang and perhaps done a daring campaign to knock out the Ma Clique and stop supplied coming overland from the USSR.

@@curtiswong7280 I get the mountains part, which at the same time is a little odd since those same mountains would be the site of many chinese civil war battles so its curious how they can fight in them but IJA couldn't? Also IJA would go on to fight in Burma AND PNG which is Mountains + Jungle (literally the worst terrain to fight in) and win in many cases, how is it possible there where their supply lines are even less secure but Ya'an is impossible when they have the whole of northern china and rail line supplies? I get the partisan attacks but they largely could do both in theory, sorting out the partisans and offensive into Shannxi. i'm not saying you're outright wrong but the idea that IJA are just scared or logical thinking to not fight in horrible terrain and then at the same time in other theaters we seen fighting in horrendous conditions worse than Ya'an like the Kokoda track campaign and even getting success in areas, but then for some reason attacking Shannxi is literally a no no? Seems like there's something more to it.
