Let’s be real, their chemistry peaked in season 1, and it’s like you been saying, this could of been an amazing relationship if they just had better writing. If they utilized Iris to her actual characters strengths, like her paper stuff instead of her being the leader of team Flash, which by the way, when did that happened, she probably wouldn’t be as hated as she is now.

Honestly they were better ways to go about the foundation of their relationship than having them grow up together in the same household such as simply having Iris grow up over at Keystone City or Blue Valley with her mom and Joe never being too present in her life or being at all farmialiar with her or simply have the talented Jesse L Martin play a completely different character that fostered Barry while he and Iris meet as adults like most iterations in the comics of how they got together. Them being siblings was always their rocky foundation

Why does where they live matter? They are still UNRELATED, and they were already friends before his mother was killed. Joe was doing Henry a favor by taking in Barry, who never stopped seeing his father as his father. and fighting to be reunited. Just because you have a certain view of Barry and Iris' childhood doesn't mean they had the same perspective. Proximity has zero bearing on the situation.

@gloriouslumi Considering Iris thought of Barry as her brother/sibling in the beginning and while yeah Barry had a crush on her they were still raised by the same man who brought them up as siblings together and the show still unecessarily overcomplicated things by having them grow under the same household rather than just have them meet as adults to not have the sibling status placed on them plus it couldve definitely helped Iris as a character who deserved a lot more

There's a way to fix this. When barry's dad gets arrested, he goes into a group home for those last 7 years while growing up in the group home, he does get bullied and things of that nature. But he's persistent, because he remembers joe, and he grows up wanting to be a forensic scientist for his dad, while also wanting to be like joe west. Boom now its less weird

Something that's always annoyed me about Westallen shippers is their hypocrisy. They'll call people sexist for not liking Iris but when they're asked why she needed to be in the show they'll say "Nora and Bart have to be born" showing that to them she only exists to have Barry's kids making them the real sexists. They don't get that if Iris was a more interesting character, had had a personality other than "Barry's wife and a damsel in distress", if a better actress had played her because there are better black actresses than Candice" my only 2 expressions are annoyed eye roll and angry glare" Patton, if Barry and Iris's relationship had been healthy and loving instead of unhealthy and obsessive, if it had actually been built up instead of the writers doing the lazy "they have to be together because Iris has Barry's surname in a future paper" and cliche destined soulmates shit and if they hadn't been adopted siblings people would have liked her more.

It's just insulting how Barry makes a huge deal about not telling Patty his secret identity, making that a breaking point in the relationship, and then have Barry tell every other person without hesitation. He barely even tried to keep it a secret in the end with how easily he'd just throw in the towel and show complete strangers, villain, and anyone else. The identity reveal used to be a big moment in media, but it's just become another joke (like MCU Spider-man being allergic to his own mask). And I heavily agree with the overuse of making love interests part of the action because the writers just have no idea how to write other stories that don't tie into the superhero plot, so it just becomes easier to make everyone know the secret identity and everyone be part of fighting crime in some way. For example, in Spider-man 2, the plan to get the symbiote meteorite was Peter luring Venom away, Miles keeping the symbiotes busy on the surface, and MJ going into the nest itself to get the meteorite and taking it to EMF herself with Miles swinging next to her. That's a terrible plan that relied solely on MJ's plot armour. If she really needed to be included, have her be at EMF prepping the Particle Accelerator so that Miles goes into the nest and gets the meteorite and swings it back to EMF. He's less likely to die, his powers give him extra defence against the symbiotes, and he can travel from Central Park to EMF way faster than MJ could on her motorcycle. (this tangent went longer than I planned) Iris was at her best when she was pursuing a career as a journalist. It allows for some crossover between hero and civilian lives, but it doesn't revolve around it. Making her the badass team leader (after Barry appointed Cisco as team leader) just doesn't fit the character and doesn't feel justified for her growth. Her story was combined with Barry's and that's a disservice to both the characters and the writing as a whole

I never viewed Iris as team leader in season 4, just the person behind the computer on comms because Cisco is now on the field. There was only one episode that shows Iris being a team leader, and that's when Barry and Caitlin are both captured.

Honestly, at first, it didn't bother me cause I assumed the original timeline had Barry parent's alive so I could go with the idea that they weren't meant to be together but due to reverse flash and his actions. My problem was over time it became clear they had no idea what to do with the original timeline. Eventually, they just made our Barry the original which never lined up but with how much the timeline kept changing who could keep up? In the end, the relationship between them just became this creepy thing that didn't fit with the original version and left us wondering why?

Iris is too "important" for how little she actually puts into Team Flash. She adds very little, whereas characters like Cisco and Caitlyn contribute more to the show. That is why people prefer Barry with Caitlyn. Iris adds next to nothing and gets in the way often. I was also sick of the cat-and-mouse game she loved to play.

At the end of the day, it's blood that matters. You can live with a foster family your whole childhood, unless the foster 'siblings' are also related to you then built in biology is gonna see them as partner material. You're not being total honest about what you're saying. Iris and Eddie was already at the bolding alley. Iris is amazing as well. Non of the other girl looked no better than Iris. Personally i wanted Iris to be with Scott evans. Someone that understands her. Iris was over worked being with Barry because he was a weak hero. Nobody had more time with barry than Catilan. I do think that their chemistry was awkward at some point but not really but not the way you’re making it out to be and Barry only live with them for 10 years because he went to stay with them when he was like 10 or 11 and we meet Barry when he’s like 20 to 21 so it can only be that he was living with them for 10 to 11 years Which I feel like to be kind of brother and sister you have to be raised at an early age otherwise you can still be that and not have a good relationship like siblings with huge age gaps like 10 years 15 years 20 years not to like have a good relationship because they’re in totally different stages of life

First off they weren't brother and sister. They were best friends and Barry always had feelings towards Iris. Yes they lived together but they were not raised as siblings. Lets be real it was the writers incest fetish being played out on screen. Legally by actual law Barry and Iris couldn't be married. It was handwaved because they needed to wrap it up. They should have never put them in the same house. I do not care about Barry and Iris ending up together, I think they needed a different actress for Iris because she had no chemistry with Grant and the writing was awful. But this is the issue of them being made Adopted/Foster siblings and just no one treating that as weird. And as stated is actually against the law. So did Joe just not actually foster Barry did he just pick up him up and go "Mine" and it was just seen as legal?

She's not just an adoptive sister though. They were childhood friends first. They didn't see each other as brother and sister, they only happened to share the same house after Barry's dad was arrested. Barry always addresses Joe by his first name, he never called him "dad" so to him he was just a kind friend of a family and a role model with a cute daughter. It's extremely weird to me how American culture makes it a taboo to have relationships with people you're not related to by blood and are of the same age but happen to live under the same roof. And yet the step-sibling category seems to be the most popular on a certain hub. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm sorry but if you have some kid living in your house, you have custody of them. Whether or not that means guardian or adoptive father makes little difference. Plus they still grew up in the same house, Barry has more memories living with Joe and Iris than living with his own parents. Plus in episode 1 of season 1, Iris literally mentions how they are pretty much siblings.
