Actor and model Nyle DiMarco is Deaf. He doesn’t understand the concept of silence - it’s just his default mode. DiMarco went on to win “America’s Next Top Model” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Now, he uses his platform to help Deaf children who don’t have the same access to sign language and community that he did as a child. | For viewers who need sound to access this video, a version with the subtitles read onto a soundtrack is available here: bit.ly/2FJoNVK

It’s amazing that he can recognize his own privileges even being deaf. Coming from a warm loving family that understands him, not all deaf kids have this. And not all parents understand their dead children. His work is important! I want to learn sign language :)

might want to change that "dead" at the 2nd sentence to "deaf" lol

Being able to hear would mean having to listen to all the stupid crap that comes out of people's mouths, plus telemarketers.

A very powerful and smart to choice to have the video be silent. To have empathy people need to put themselves in another person’s shoes. Nyle is amazing.

Am I alone in thinking all children should learn basic sign language in school as it is used in their country? What possible harm can there be? Teach it to six, seven or eight year olds... and refresh every two years.

I couldn’t agree with you more. The society we live in is very self centric. We have to teach kids to be more open minded and to accept the “different” in any form. Autism is another form of “different” like being deaf is. Actually many kids with autism communicate using ASL. Empathy will save our world. Do you agree?

I was thinking about this recently when riding on the subway. Two deaf men were signing to each other subtly. It got me thinking about this as well... why not teach a little sign language to everyone? What an amazing ability to be able to communicate non-verbally? It would actually be such a useful skill for hearing people as well as open up the world to communicate better with the deaf community

citrine dragon no, there’s over 300 registered different sign languages in the UK, guess how many it would be in the whole world.

i don't think that's necessary, i do think the classes to learn sign languages should be cheaper for those who want to learn.

What a great role model for everyone really. But I would not like to be deaf. I like that I can hear and have all my 5 senses. Nyle inspired me to learn Auslan (which is the Australian version of ASL).

Sorry, but what a disgusting thing to say. You’re almost jealous of a disability? You can wear noise cancelling headphones. Ear plugs. But to not even have the option of hearing? Never hear your child laugh or cry? Never hear the fire alarm going off? You don’t want to lose one of your senses. Do not be jealous
