Just a tip to the filmmakers - facial expression are a massive part of the American Sign Language so zooming in on Nyle’s hands makes it hard to understand what he’s saying.

This is why it’s so important to teach sign language in schools as a compulsory subject. You may not come across a deaf person very often but even small gestures like this would make someone’s whole day
@MayuraVyamsaka
@MayuraVyamsaka 5 жыл бұрын
I would be so happy if they included sign languages as second languages too. They're equally as valid as French or Spanish. Not everyone is going to meet a French or Spanish speaker in their lives either, so the utility of ASL or BSL or SSE is really a moot point

• oetori • it should be. I’ve been forced into the hearing world my whole life as a mainstreamed person. I would have liked to know how to tell someone my name in the community I’m supposed to belong to. Instead I was forced to conform to you with my disability. Why would it hurt you to have the ability to say hello to me?
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 3 жыл бұрын
@@MayuraVyamsaka In addition to usefulness or likelihood of needing a particular language, ideally a student's propensity would also be taken into account. For example, the student wants to learn Spanish, because a lot of people in the community speak it. Btw, in the U.S. only about 1% of people with significant hearing loss know ESL.

@Kananthejedi

Facial expression is to help with the grammatical part of ASL. And it’s considered rude to not look at the signer’s face when they are signing.
@leighly3344

Nyle’s interpréter is there so that’s who he keeps looking at when he talks and I suspect that’s how comes the other doesn’t have to analyze his ASL cause the interpreter is speaking. I also suspect that’s why the volume goes up when Nyle speaks. I think.

I mean yeah definitely a reason to want to learn ASL to be able to communicate with the deaf community in general but honestly at most events which is where you would most likely meet him he has a translator with him so just like Chella wasn’t signing the whole time you would not need ASL to talk to him plus you could honestly type what you wanted to say on your phone and hand it to him back and forth if it was out of the blue and the deaf person didn’t have a translator. Just options so people don’t feel just because they don’t know ASL or whatever sign language their country uses they can’t communicate effectively with deaf people

we should teach asl in schools not only to include the hoh/deaf community, but also because there are many times where we are unable to communicate because the environment doesn’t allow us to either speak or hear, and can make communication as a whole easier between everyone. especially with the rising number of people who are losing their hearing earlier in life than before, learning a language at a young age is much easier than trying to learn it after you’ve lost your hearing

Thank you @them! Very important stuff in this video. However, zooming in on hands for ASL is not helpful, you need to see body language & facial expressions to fully understand. Focus point is usually from the chest to the top of the head. Kudos 🤘🤘🤘

I feel this. I didn't wear hearing aids in highschool partially because I was embarrassed about them. I tried them for a while but I always hid them behind a hat. Now I wear them proudly and they help a lot, but I think I missed out on a lot of social skills because I couldn't hear, and now I'm having to catch up. I only know a tiny tiny bit of sign language and I'm taking a class in 2022 so I can learn some more.

I love this video so much! One thing I wanted to point out just quickly was the editing, more specifically how a few times the camera zoomed in on only Nyle's hands. Facial expression is just as vital as the actual signs in sign language, so it's important that one can see Nyle's face when he is signing. Other than that I really enjoyed the video and thought it was very interesting and insightful!

During the video, a random memory came to my mind, in which a friend of mine didn't date a guy cause he had a hearing problem... It wasn't just that, but that was her main reason and she was kinda concerned about how the whole date would go, how they'd communicate etc. A thing came to another and they just didn't date... of course that happened when I was like 15/16, but there are still people out there who think the same as she did back then. That just makes you wonder how more difficult some people's lives are on every aspect of their everyday life... Idk about y'all but I'd date them, cochlear implant or not, they seem like interesting people and having "a challenge" when it comes to communicating, just makes you appreciate more every single word they tell you... I believe that "challenges", like finding a way to communicate efficiently and effectively, make the stronger and the relationship a little more interesting.

@@ellamills5716 I mean yeah, but the secondary reason that she didn't date him was really kinda stupid, but let's not talk about that... You're completely right, for some people a life without auditory communication between them and their partner, can be devastating...
