Davor Šuker was quite underrated. As a Croat I remember 2018 very well, but people often take the 1998 World Cup for granted. Šuker was that guy at the World Cup with 6 goals in 6 games. At Sevilla he was putting up world class numbers for years and was so good he got a pitch invasion at his last game before transferring. There’s plenty more but those the most memorable.
@doncarloancelotti2256Ай бұрын
Most people still believe 1998 team would beat 2018 on paper. The gap between Suker and Mandzukic was far greater than Modric and Boban.
@EnriqueBartulacАй бұрын
True, but younger Croats like myself still tend to take that achievement for granted. I don’t exactly agree with that take looking at the whole midfield three plus Perišić in the attack. Subašić had issues (like the final) but throughout the tournament he was great, and also was critical to that prime Monaco side. My stance on this kind of thing proves my point though doesn’t it.

Kevin Phillips retained his absolutely deadly finishing all the up until he was 39 playing for Crystal Palace. He lost all of his pace but the man could literally score from anywhere. I feel like Lewandowski was (and, when at full-fitness, still is) an example of a pure-striker in the generation just before the current one we have now. A guy with insane attacking instinct, always finding himself where needed, almost always immune to the offside trap due to his insane ability to read defender's intentions. A guy who finishes in 1-3 touches most of the time, no more, no less. Haaland is definitely efficient, but he just doesn't bring the same vibe in my opinion. There's still that modern number 9 aspect in him, as well as Kane. His absurd stats aside, BvB Lewy was a gem so few people got to see live or in-person. His 19/20 and 20/21 seasons were also so reminiscent of classic number 9s imo (although he did play a heavy role of a playmaker in those i suppose). Either way, this guy is probably gonna be one of the last pure 9's that we will see for a while. It's a shame he gets so little recognition, even the lack of mention in him in this video speaks volume of that fact.

thats what makes me love lewa, he doesn't need to be quick, nor has to dribble through the entire team to score. Like Roberto Carlos shooting power, Ronaldo R9 flair + speed+ stepovers, Beckham crosses, Ronaldinho, Fabien Barthez for crazy excentric goalkeeping, Juninho's freekicks and all those creative playmakers. They were known for their special skills. Thats one thing i miss nowadays. The space for individuality got tiny in the last decade. 90s and 2000s were fun to watch.

Brolin and Larrson (Larrson the icon) I know a lot about Brolin it’s a shame he retired at 28, he literally retired because he thought he won enough and was fine with what he had

Alan Shearer was the best in that generation, carried that average Newcastle team. Ruud, everyone knew him... but folks like Shearer were legends. Batistuta was another freak. You then have Christian Vieri... another tall monster. Bierhoff... Kluivert... Romario... that era was really all about making sure your ball reaches that man up front, otherwise you lost games. Heck Davor Suker was another name that came to mind. It was another era in football... Crespo, anyone? Could anyone ever forget George Weah?

I remember looking at Inter and they had Vieri, Ronaldo, Recoba, Kallou, Ventola…Milan had Shevchenko, Inzaghi, Tommason, Sukur, Juventus had Salas, Trezeguet, Lazio had Crespo, Roma had Batistuta and Montella…my god Seria A each big club had 4-5 super strikers

Just looking at the comments you can tell this era was special. 20 years later people keep droping dozens of names that fit the description of the video.

Nice work bro. Marcelo Salas deserves a mention too

I instantly recognised Roy as a Bayern Munich fan, he would be invisible at times to just appear towards the end of the game and score. His goal against Real Madrid in 11 seconds is iconic

My dad is in his late 40s so he has seen the likes of Maradona, Okocha and many people you've talked about from the late 80s to the early 2000s. Poor me was born in a time when the best PL striker is a Norwegian tap in merchant. However, this generation of football has a lot of good talent, and I'm just happy to have grown up in an era where two men made 40 goals per season look like an everyday stat. U can say the quality of football is dropping, I've admitted it, but u have to admit that despite this, there are still many exciting golden gems around.

It was the crossover point in football, where the long ball, kick & rush, crosses into the box, 4-4-2 football with defenders that were largely, to be polite, “functional” and the defenders were only just starting to become the ball players we see now.

Dwight Yorke 1998-9 won UCL and leading goalscorer in UCL and didn't even get nominated for a Ballon d'or and even did the treble with Man Utd.

Not only the strikers were insanely talented and technically but so were the defenders. Standout defenders though and full of characters
