If you are not Phil Jackson, the Lakers coaching position doesn't end well. Imagine Hurley gets fired after a few seasons (which is highly likely due to the short history of all their coaches since Phil), that would damage his reputation and he would never be in the running as an all time great. Sounds like Hurley is chasing history and is in much better position right now, then say a few seasons from now as Lakers coach when he is wondering if he will keep an unstable job

I said the same thing the moment the details of UConn’s new offer came out. I attended St. Benedict’s when Hurley was the varsity basketball coach there; he and his family are pretty much basketball royalty in Jersey. Hurley’s an East Coast dude through and through, which is why I was shocked Jeanie and Pelinka were going after him. The pursuit was doomed from the start.

I think the offer would have to be about more than money. Listening to Hurley's numerous interviews over the years he would need other assurances of control which he wasn't going to get. His autonomy would be nonexistent. Lakers are known for micromanaging, plus dealing with all those egos. Hurley doesn't want to get paid to be a puppet. It's not complicated-it wasn't a fit.

Jeannie Buss needs to clean up her staff, the Lakers will remain mediocre until she does that.
