I don’t think it should be mandatory for a president where their official language is not English. It will ofc give the country a boost because the president can speak on behalf of the country to the world but not a requirement, that’s why there is translators

I really like the idea of a translator but i also know that it doesn’t always work, much less with what I’ve seen firsthand. Over here there’s been cases where less than ideal translators get jobs that they don’t actually deserve. Another problem is how you’re perceived by everyone. Just look at Correa. He tries to speak English but it’s like that effort is overshadowed by people mocking him for trying. In the case of this video, it’s fine since he did fire shots first but people making fun of his English is something that’s been happening for a long time, even during his presidency, not to mention that it says a lot about the English level of the country. Oh and I don’t just mean because the ex-president can’t speak English well but also because Ecuador is ranked quite poorly when it comes to English level of citizens overall. It’s a whole conversation but just some thoughts.

I think it's hard enough for some politicians to be well-spoken in their native language😊. It would be nice if they were multilingual but shouldn't be a requirement.
