This is a one-size-fits-all sort of thing when Ecuador is a highly diverse country with each area being different in its own ways. Few places take credit cards, don't count on them period. Charging extra for using a credit card is now illegal. Never drink the water in coastal areas, but you should be fine in Quito and you'll have no issue in Cuenca. Name brand clothes are cheap as they are often knock-offs. No, peanut butter doesn't cost $28 a jar, but American brands will run about $8. By and large, except for American things, prices are low for everything. Cabs are cheap, buses are ridiculously cheap, for food, you'd be hard-pressed to spend $20 a day. Yes, you can haggle over prices, but why? If you can afford to visit, you can probably afford the "gringo tax." As for tipping, a quarter is usually good for a lunch. But most places are family owned and they have a tip jar that is divided among all the employees. Again, just because a quarter is acceptable, you can do better. Drop a dollar in the jar and they're really happy. Better yet, give your waitperson a dollar and put a dollar in the jar. With all the apps today, you don't need to know any Spanish. But at least trying is appreciated.

It is a huge warning to us all. When the developed world can't maintain power 24/7, how bad is it in the undeveloped world? We've got to get rid of these rich "populist" leaders who are in bed with the OWNERS of our world.

Thank you, Ace! I love your channel, and I really appreciate your honest updates on the situation in Ecuador. How safe would it be for a US expat to live in a detached home in Cotacachi? I need a fenced yard for my dog to run and play a few times a day, even though she is an indoor dog. So apartments are not an option.

They are right, when the electric is off, yes your refrigerator is not working. When the electric comes back your refrigerator must work much harder and use more electricity to cool everything down with the moisture that has built up. If you have a washing machine, you are simply shifting the time of day you use it to when there is electricity. Those are major electricity consumers. Besides, how is the government going to manipulate your electric meter? Any conspiracy theories? Check your electric meter to see what is happening.

Most people either fear what they don’t know or they think the grass is always greener elsewhere. The truth is somewhere in between. Young people want opportunity and a path to prosperity. Old people want community and stability. Sadly, there are fewer and fewer places offering all the things that everyone needs. Corruption is replacing cooperation and we are all looking for an escape.

I hope when you come back to Ecuador that everything goes well! 💯

USA is a beautiful country and I never feel unsafe here, but continually it is becoming more expensive and more divided politically. Racists are being emboldened by many leaders in the government and the media. At my age, the big question is whether it makes more sense to retire at 62 and move to Ecuador or to continue working until I'm 70 to sustain the lifestyle I have in the United States. What do these 8 years mean to me? Eight years where I can fully live my life while I'm young enough to travel and explore the world without major health issues. I'm leaning more on the Ecuadorian plan that minimizes my cost-of-living expenses. You said that "a successful business" puts a person in risk . . . that really bothers me. There's no Ecuadorian governmental agency that protects businessmen against mafias or cartels? Small businesses are the roads to economic freedom in the U.S. - it should be the same in Ecuador. This really bothers me.
@GMAceM
@GMAceM 5 күн бұрын
I appreciate your feedback on the situation in the states. As for the situation with the businesses, I feel like I’ll have to talk about that in more detail in a future video. The short answer I can give right now is that there should be protection but it doesn’t feel that way most of the time.

People should stay in their countries as intended, this is your stance now that Trump won
@byronjacomo1127
@byronjacomo1127 5 күн бұрын
Trump didn’t change my stance. It always sucked for a Hispanic to immigrate to the U.S. Americans typically don’t understand that there are different classes of people in Latin America - just like in the United States - there are educated people/professionals - there are uneducated people/laborers . . . Hispanics immigrate for different reasons. It’s not always for economic reasons. The uneducated American has to believe that they are better/superior than these subhuman immigrants. My stance has not changed. It always sucked. Now with the divisive rhetoric from the top, a$$holes are more empowered to discriminate. When a person leaves their home country, they leave their identity and self worth behind. It was always better to stay in your home country. I hope Noboa will get re-elected and minimizes the corruption and creates more opportunities for Ecuadorians to advance. I hope I was clear enough for you.

Hello, I am coming to Ecuador in Jan for 2 yrs. I have been watching this channel for a while now. I am teaching,Is there a place/hangout for expats?
@GMAceM
@GMAceM 5 күн бұрын
That’s great, glad you’re coming down! In terms of hangouts, it really depends on what city you’re in but you can try joining a Facebook group for that city. For example, Manta has a group called “Manta and Manabi Expats and Amigos” and there’s of course tons of expats you can connect with. I also saw that there’s a group called “Expats in Quito” that you could join if you’re in Quito. You should try joining the group of the city you’re going to be in so that you can see if they do meet-ups and such.

I migrated to Ecuador 🇪🇨 living in Sector Basílica, Quito Sur, Centro Histórico. After making several trips over a ten year period, I made the move. I have been living in Ecuador for two years. As a United States 🇺🇸 citizen, I haven't been missing very much. The Biden/Harris administration is corrupt. The healthcare system is corrupt. Money is driving it. Most of our politicians are corrupt and on the take financially. The economy is in terrible shape, and economic inflation is through the roof. The corrupt Biden Administration opened up our borders and flooded the country with illegal immigrants. Their goal was twofold. The first was to establish a permanent underclass. The second was to solidify their voting base and establish a one party Marxist/Socialist form of government. I counciled my Equatorianous friends not to immigrate to the United States at this time. Some listened to me, and a few did not. Now, the United States has new leadership that I believe is going to get the economy back up and running properly. But with new leadership, America is going to have new challenges and problems. The liberal Socialist Democratic Party who control many of our beautiful major cities have destroyed most of them. They have robbed and cheated and conspired down through the years, leaving many major cities in ruin. Ecuador 🇪🇨 has a far superior education system. Ecuador prizes education, and the kids are great in their uniforms. America's inner city schools are little more than zoos. Ecuador 🇪🇨 has a superior healthcare system. This is due to the medical professionals caring and not selling out for profit alone. Ecuador 🇪🇨 is not perfect. No country is. But I plan to live out my life here, apply for Ecuadorian citizenship, and have a second passport.

I just returned a week ago from Ecuador: Stayed the week; the energy crisis didn’t really effect too much because most of the hours without power were in the early mornings when I was asleep, but you were always conscious of it and the blackouts did not always follow the advertised “schedule”.
@GMAceM
@GMAceM 5 күн бұрын
The randomness really did make it complicated to be on top of the schedule 100% of the time. That’s been one of everyone’s biggest complaints, aside from the fact that there are blackouts, since if you can’t coordinate around the blackouts then you become scared of when they’re going to happen or they end up happening at an inconvenient time. I’ve personally had inconveniences in the classes I give due to this and I can imagine the problems businesses may have had as well.

Today (Thursday December 12th), there was a mini outage at around 3AM for about an hour in the coast. It’s not a huge blackout of course but it shows that there are still inconsistencies in the schedule and the possibility that blackouts can happen. There was also a report that the industrial zone will have blackouts for 15 days starting on December 15th. This still doesn’t change my verdict in the video and in fact it reinforces what I said in my conclusion around the end. Thank you for reading through this mini update and for watching the video!

My dad bought a small generator. But that was 50 years ago. We no longer have this problem. Electricity is much more reliable. The last time we had a blackout, a major cascading failure tripped and cut power to most of the country. It happened around 2am, and was restored before 6am. Probably wouldn't have taken so long if it had occurred in daytime. But this really is a better option than a generator.
