Why Did Hollywood Abandon Mars?

I feel like there'd be real potential in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy as a TV series. They're (mostly) hard sci-fi stories of Mars' colonization and terraformation over time. People seemed to vibe with The Martian's emphasis on realism, and a colonization story would work well as a long-form drama with a large diverse cast. (And I agree, Mission To Mars is a bit underrated. In particular, the micrometeor accident sequence is exceptionally well done.)

John Carter is underrated, Last Days on Mars is even more underrated, and there is also the forgotten classic Robinson Crusoe on Mars, which looks _amazing._

Total Recall is classic up there with Terminator & Robocop. Arnold's passion project and perhaps most violent movie. He also wanted Verhoeven after seen RoboCop. Movie was in production hell until Arnold got behind it and got Paul Verhoeven to direct.

John Carter was doomed as soon as the idea was sold to Disney. I think the movie would have worked much better as a serious adult themed movie instead of the Disney'd up version we got. I did like Mission to Mars and Red Planet, they were both kind of near misses but still enjoyable.

John Carter wasn't a bad movie but it felt like the most generic sci-fi adventure story. For obvious it pretty much invented the tropes 100 years ago reasons. And this is the problem with Mars. We know what its like now so any adventure story can only be set in some distant future or its gonna be a boring cold desert with dust storms.

@@inframeout the OG script of the 2011 Green Lantern had siniestro been posses by parallax and figthing on mars on a bigger scale, it got rewritten mainly due to budget reasons. Im glad someone elese appreacte popstar ;) Btw could you do for steampunk films? Im interest about your view of that topic, i think mainstream audiences dont accept them as much as cyberpunk

Mars is a big brown rock in space. Unless you're really into geology, it's a really boring place. Any decent movie needs a compelling story. Putting a weak story on Mars doesn't make it any more interesting.

"The Princess Bride" is one of the most beloved films amongst young boys ever made? Dito "Princess Mononoke". Not to mention "Xena: Warrior Princess", "Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess" all having evenly mixed, non-gender specific demographics etc

I found that an odd thing to find ''gross'' too. Even as an adult, if I saw a film called Princess of Mars I'd assume it was all about princesses or something and take little interest. Especially as it was a Disney film it gives the impression of being a Disney Princess type property which is a genre I have no interest in. I'd also argue about Princess Bride being one of the most beloved films among young boys ever. It's a good film and has it's fans but most beloved? Not sure many boys under 30 have even seen it. Same with Princess Monokoke and Xeno.

They will once they saw the awful Asylum produced direct to Sy-Fy channel dreck. That was an offensively bad film and they crapped it out before the John Carter movie came out thinking they could cash in on its public domain source material (and that Disney wouldn't use that title).

@@JM-gd3hr Disney princess films don't interest or entertain me and I don't have the time to watch and judge every single film that exists, nor does anyone else. So people have to make a judgement call on the little information we do have. If they see a disney film with princess in the title they may assume it is a stereotypical disney princess film (which it isn't). But because it sounds like it may be a genre they may not like then it could put them off bothering to see it. Just like if it sounded like it may be a romcom. Nothing to do with hating women or sexism. It's about marketing the film to it's main demographic.

@@JM-gd3hr Princess in the title of a disney film evokes images of that type of princess, even if there hasn't been an actual disney film with princess in the title. It can give the impression it is about stereotypical princesses. It doesn't make the movie sound like an action romp. Disney also wanted the ''of mars'' removed from the title so the film was just called John Carter. I don't think they wanted ''of mars'' removed for ''gross'' reasons because kids hate mars. They just try to market the film to the target demographic as successfully as possible based on usual trends and sometimes scientific analysis.
