EVs get their fair share of often very negative comments, so why on earth did I buy one?

Great video, mate, and I completely agree. I've owned various performance cars over the last 10 years and none of them compare to my Taycan Turbo. It's the best car I've ever driven. People with a negative perception of them would quickly change their minds if they owned one. I love your content.

It's often the case that those who hold a dislike for EVs are either uninformed or envious due to their inability to afford one. I, too, used to have negative views rooted in ignorance before purchasing a Taycan, so I understand the sentiment. Resistance to change is normal in human nature; many oppose anything new, especially if it's being forced on them. Personally, it should always be about choice; when you force something, people will fight it. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Although I currently own two diesel cars, the Taycan is my favourite.

If you are a tech lover you don't care about a specific technology, you simply want the best possible solution to a problem. EVs are a solution that does not work to a problem that does not exist. For driving experience EVs are completely inferior to ICEs because of the huge difference in energy density. A 15,000 hp top fuel dragster will do 330 mph in 3.68 seconds. No EV will ever come close. Not in a million years.

For those that complain, now is the greatest choice of all car types on sale, before non-hybrid petrol and diesel quickly get phased out. Plenty of choice to buy whatever people want! Taycan is a great daily if you can stomach the £140k+ price. The Taycan mk.2 also has some tech that you can’t get in many other cars - Active Ride (no anti-roll bars), noise insulated glass, new gen Porsche LED matrix lights etc, plus the huge jump to 340 mile range from about 220 miles. Euro 7 rules are an issue for new cars, means pretty much hybrid only save for limited run cars.

I agree with all you say . It makes me laugh the way people keep going on about their lack of engine noise, as if we all drove around in v6 and v8 motors. Why did reviewers always go on about hush quiet cars years ago only to complain about the lack of noise in electric cars. We all buy the car we want. I wish i could have a Porsche, but in any form, it is totally impractical for my work and life balance. I can only afford to run one car, and the car I have is great for me. I think that is what people forget. We all have different needs and wants.

You lost me with Prince, but interesting vid from someone who actually drives these cars. Nothing I’ve seen, read, heard or experienced myself makes me think electric cars are the future. They may run alongside it as an alternative to ICE but there are too many limitations. Also need to see what happens to all these batteries when they’re at the end of their life. People who say they care about the planet just need to stop changing their car every three years. The Porsche is undoubtedly a cool bit of kit either way though.

In regard to the battery replacement in the future, that could be argued. For example, you mentioned it could need replacing at a significant cost. This is very true at today's prices because EVs are relatively new. However, in 3-10 years, battery prices will likely continue to come down, and my guess is they will be a lot cheaper, especially in 10 years.

@peterdejong5456
@peterdejong5456 5 ай бұрын
On the contrary, a basic economic law is that prices go up when demand increases and supply is not. Batteries will become increasingly expensive as millions more EVs are produced, simply because they use very expensive materials that are already in very limited supply.
@eingast7798
@eingast7798 5 ай бұрын
@@peterdejong5456 who said that supply is fixed? Also when demand is high and sourcing material gets expensive, new technologies are searched saving materials.
@peterdejong5456
@peterdejong5456 5 ай бұрын
@@eingast7798 No, that is a misconception. Lithium and cobalt are abundant in seawater, but it takes tremendous amounts of energy to mine them there. This is very costly and defeats the purpose if these batteries require more energy to manufacture than they can store during their lifetime. Also new technologies and more efficient use of current materials can only cover for a few dozen percent looking at technological innovations in general. But EV growth will be in the hundred percent for many years to substitute all ICE. Therefore the only direction of battery prices is up.
@pjroberts2010
@pjroberts2010 5 ай бұрын
@@peterdejong5456 Battery prices are indeed likely to see a decline, especially with ongoing advancements in battery technology and the expanding EV market. Researchers are continuously working on new battery chemistries and production methods that will utilise cheaper or more abundant materials, driving down costs. Furthermore, as the demand for EVs increases, mining and processing operations for battery materials are also scaling up, which will lead to increased supply and more stable prices.

Good video 👍🏻 But you mention that your 21 year old engine is still strong, an Electric motor could still be going strong after 21 years seen as there very few moving parts, people compare batteries (fuel) to engines when it comes to how long they’ll last before they’ll need replacing which isn’t comparing like for like. I have an EV with 400bhp and my wife has a petrol car with less than 100 yet the fuel cost (charging at home) are huge! this in someways would then offset the cost of replacement batteries after that many years but nothing offsets the price of a new engine.
@TABonTV
@TABonTV 5 ай бұрын
Great point and I was having this exact convo the other day. The reality is what's the biggest ticket item you might need to replace on your car? ICE certainly the engine, but it's unlikely you'll have to. EV motors? Very, very unlikely. Still plenty of ancient industrial motors out there going strong... Battery? Almost certainly at some point in the life of the vehicle. 👍🏻

Well done and spot on. The Taycan DOES have soul - an emotional connection between person and vehicle. Perhaps the Tesla Model 3 is a "transportation appliance," but then again, so is a Nissan Versa or even a Toyota Corolla. The Porsche handles better than any other non-sports car. Fit an finish is equal to a 911, which is top notch. Depreciation will be problematic, as it is for all EVs. That may change in the long term, but technology will push forward as it always does. Keep up the good work and great content.

It’s just a shame the depreciation is so heavy, and it’s not just cause it’s a gen 1 - have a look at the finance examples Porsche are giving on the gen 2’s and see how much the GFV is, it’s shocking - and just not affordable to anyone other than the super rich/a business - which is a real shame as it’s such a great car. I just don’t get the hate for EV’s in this country, it’s really weird, and it’s putting people off buying an EV as they get bombarded with negativity. Any failure outside warranty that forces you to replace the battery pack will result in a total loss of the car, even if the rest is still brand new. Tesla Model S was designed for battery swap, but Musk expected fast charging to become faster. Now Tesla uses the battery as a structural part of the car body resulting in a more lightweight car. Only Chinese brand Nio now offers models with a 5 min battery swap in special service stations and with battery lease (BaaS, Battery-as-a-Service). In China right now, Shanghai, and it really feels like the future for the rest of us. Everything is electric, cars, buses, mopeds and trucks. Walked through a shopping centre looking for sun cream only to stumble across a nest of car showrooms, MG, BYD, Tesla, Buick, Audi and Siaomi I could wonder directly from one car to the next comparing fit and finish, quality of materials and even got offered a test drive, in middle of shanghai no thanks. I’m a bit of a dinosaur and do love the sound and physical experience you get from a boxer 6 porsche engine but there is no denying the appeal of being so quick off the mark it made the nip and tuck of 4 lane overtake both sides driving an absolute doddle. Kind of converted me but to which EV exactly. I found most of the brands superficially reasonably good quality as far as you can tell from scratching plastic surfaces and prodding and poking around. Oddly enough, the Chinese panel gaps were narrower and more consistent than the Model X i “inspected” But for me it would have to be the newly and significantly upgraded Taycan. the 4S model or if i want to stay in a sports car the yet to be launched new Cayman Wonder if I’ll miss the ICE when the time comes. There was an eerie moment when walking to a restaurant i heard that instantly recognisable sound of a sole V8 making swift progress between the lights.
