Since I became a victim of a burglary, I would never buy a watch without paper. Just because it’s more likely to be a stolen watch. I will not support the thieves.
@dosprompt54182 жыл бұрын
Good point. I was wondering recently why someone would not have box and papers for a 2 yr old watch.
@mkyhou11602 жыл бұрын
Yeah, grey and secondary dealers always pump watches without box and papers as it increases the pool of watches they can sell, they can lowball on the purchase and put their “reputation stamp” on it to try and get a bigger margin. I get it with an old vintage, but the lack of good databases to tell if a watch is stolen, and the difficulty of explaining it when you want to sell, make it a poor move for a small saving.
@martimcfly62072 жыл бұрын
@@mkyhou1160 true that. But to be fair for grey market sellers it’s impossible to know if a watch was stolen or nit. That’s just the „risk“ of this business. Although legal the morality in this is questionable. And yes, it’s very likely that a 20 or 30 years old watch has no paperwork anymore. But the speedy for instance, that was stolen as well, that was from 2018 and originally came in the huge speedy box. If such a watch cone’s without all the papers, box, magnifier, velcro strap etc it’s clearly stolen. And anyway l‘m pretty sure some guy has bought it meanwhile from the burglar.

I like my Seiko SKX too. I may be an old fogey but in my opinion the golden age of watch making and indeed of all industrial design was the 1950's and '60's, not the 1990's.

Hi Fed…own a vintage (circa 1990) Rolex Oyster Quartz Date Just. Very unique and cool piece that’s an exception to your quartz discussion. Love the story behind its creation in the late 1970’s and an interesting way to get into a classic like the DJ

They are a real pain to service though. You better off with a automatic that any independent watch maker can work on. Just my 2 cents

That’s incorrect. I did my research and Oyster Quartz DJ is very easy to service (relative to other vintage models) and a battery is cheap. Parts are not an issue either.

Trying to slim down to 3-4 watches. Had several SKX's, good in their day, but obsolete now and way overpriced! As for servicing, just had my Omega Seamaster 300 done, £485 & 4 months - the wait was painful, but well worth the money - 5 days on wrist and running spot on 😁 Quartz, just NO!!! 🤣 May as well have a Fitbit or smartwatch.... Box & papers don't bother me as I usually buy to keep anyway. Golden era of watchmaking for me was 50's-60's, pre quartz crisis. Better designs. Good video thank you Fed 👍🏻👍🏻

The other reason people don't buy luxury quartz watches is that most people don't give a shit about hyper-accuracy. If you're that concerned about knowing the PERFECT time, just look at your phone. The beauty of mechanical watches is the craftsmanship and artisanal value ... knowing that there's an incredible piece of engineering on your wrist that responds to your actions and movements. Mechanical movements have an innate beauty that quartz movements simply lack.
@koolpep2 жыл бұрын
As a collector of mechanical watches, I disagree. People do buy luxury quartz watches. It’s not important for you, and that’s fine. Look at the quartz movements from Grand Seiko, they are assembled by a single watchmaker, very nicely decorated and have an intrinsic accuracy of +/-5 seconds per year. This is an amazing feat of engineering and technology. Nobody needs any wrist watch anymore since we have phones that tell the time, it s all about what we value for our wrist candy. By the way, the FP Journe Elegante (quartz) is one of the hottest FP Journes…..

I don't know about your phone but my phone is a second or two slow, it varies. That is not accurate.
@koolpep2 жыл бұрын
@@richardscalero8865 I use an iPhone - Apple has their own network of about 15 strata 1 class network time servers, placed around the world to minimize latency and signal run times. Stratum 0 is an atomic clock, stratum 1 means, directly connected to a reference time, making iPhones stratum 2-time devices (stratum 2 is connected to a stratum 1 server via a network path) - iPhones (and other Apple products) sync up to this time servers every few hours so your iPhone is usually only a few thousand to a few hundreds of a second off from the atomic reference time.

@@koolpep thanks for that, I didn't know Apple has their own time. I have an Android phone and it's time is slow but more importantly it varies.
@frankpentangeli79452 жыл бұрын
@@koolpep Sure, some people buy luxury quartz watches, but I would contend that they do so primarily to get the brand prestige on their wrists at a cheaper price than the mechanical alternatives. I just don't believe that, were mechanical and quartz versions of watches sold at exactly the same price, people (other than total geeks) would opt for the quartz versions simply because they're more accurate. Luxury mechanical watches are plenty accurate enough for the vast majority of people, assuming you're not timing a space launch liftoff. And they look better, regardless of how nicely finished the Grand Seiko quartz movements are.

“Artisnal”? Which Omega and Rolex movements are made in that fashion? Very few automatics and mechanical movements are “artisanal”- that is to say, not created in a mechanical way or by machine.

Excellent non-elitist quartz comment. They may not be everyone’s choice and horological purists and snobs may spit up on them, but of course quartz has its place. Affordability for one. There are some very handsome quartz watches available in delightful price points. Movado and TAG to start. If someone is starting out or wants to add to one’s collection, many choices exist.
