The higher the infant mortality rate is, the higher the average age of death will be relative to the average life expectancy. Ie, average age of death = (1 *+* infant mortality rate per one-hundred) *X* average life expectancy.

I think that it ultimately comes down to a fear of reality. I know that sounds absolutely crazy, but it's the only explanation that makes any sense at this point. Like you see these people, these conspiracy theorists, who say something like aliens exist or there's a cabal of rich people who diddle kids, then when there's credible evidence that comes out that those are both correct, they never talk about them again. Rather than having their beliefs vindicated, they just act like they never had those beliefs in the first place or they handwave them away.

My Medieval and Renaissance professor basically told us that if a person made it to age 30, they would probably make it to their 60s or 70s without much problem. Childbirth and child mortality skews the shit out of averages. One of the papers I wrote was on Gregorio Dati, who demonstrates that skewing of averages. Three of his four wives died from pregnancy/childbirth issues, and only seven of his 26 children were still living by the end of his diary, with the vast majority dying in childhood.

@KnightofAges
@KnightofAges Жыл бұрын
It's more nuanced than that. People didn't really do 'averages' back then, and certainly didn't count infant mortality in it. And we can easily see that people DID die young - we have the parish registers of lots of places in Christian Europe, the Curch was very stringent in recording everyone that was born, married or died. And the death rates are horrendous. In fact, you can do the test yourself: just go to a list of monarchs of any country and see at which age the medieval Kings and Queens died (and they were the most protected people of the time). You can discount the assassinated or killed in battle if you want, it makes little difference, people didn't live long. And woman's lower life expectancy came from the excessive deaths from childbirth. In fact, even when I was a kid back in the 60s-70s, we considered someone in his mid-50s or 60s as 'old'. And it was quite a feat for people to reach 70. This was even worse in earlier centuries. Heck, just check the lifespan of nobles in the 17th and 18th centuries. The French King Louis XIV, for example, died four days short of his 77th birthday. This was enough for his successor to be his greatgrandson Louis XV, since his son had died at 49 and his grandson at 29. And Louis XV died at age 64, with was enough to be succeeded by his grandson Louis Auguste (Louis XVI), as his son had died at age 36. And none of them died assassinated or in battle. Check all the lists of monarchs or nobles from all the countries you want. Before the 19th century, the death rate was very, very high.

Three factors pose dangers to an adult: childbirth for women, war for men and famine and epidemics for the rest, especially the poorer population. It still did not mean people died in their 30s,. Based on the lives of some rulers they usually reached about 50-60 years of age. There were rare cases of people (usually hermits as pointed out by a certain Byzantine writer whose name I forgot) reaching 80 and 90

I've come across Medieval Madness before, and you're exactly right. His historical accounts are littered with this kind of hubristic presentism. It's one thing to make comparisons between eras of history and now, I think that's okay to an extent, as it can help give one's audience a little perspective. It's quite another to make sweeping moral/ethical judgments about history based on modern ideologies. These judgements tell the audience much more about the creator's beliefs than they do about history, which in turn tells us rather a lot about the motives of said creator... And those motives aren't really about history at all. Sadly, this seems to be a very prominent characteristic of modern British historians (eg David Olusoga). I'm not a qualified historian, just a pleb with interest in the subject... But I would much rather watch someone like, say, Histocrat, than someone like Medieval Madness. This is because Histocrat, despite his frequent mispronunciation of names and places, seems to be engaged and thorough. Most importantly, I never feel like the events he discusses are being used as some kind of cheap allegory to promote his own worldview or ideological leanings. Even if at times he might be inaccurate, it's always an honest mistake, not a contortion. Medieval Madness, in comparison, often has this feel of assumed, unthinking superiority, like he is better than the historic peoples he discusses (particularly historic Britons, for some reason) while making massive general assumptions based on mostly inaccurate modern myths about the past, a lot of which can be debunked with extremely minimal research. This appears (at least to me) to be an exercise in mild propaganda, used in order to prop up (and highlight the 'superiority' of) certain fashionable beliefs of the present Western world. Perhaps he is just very young. Things are always much more black and white at that age...

There is a big difference between bathing and washing. A bath implies filling a bathtub with hot water, climbing in naked and scrubbing yourself with a bar of soap. How often did this happen? Depends on how rich you were, how much clean water you had access to, how much valuable firewood you could divert to heating that 20-gallons of water. Once a month? Once a year? Once a lifetime? We DO NOT KNOW because no one wrote it down. BUT, a daily sponge-bath with a pail of warm water was proabably common, weekly to daily if possible. People DID try to remain clean if only to keep the demons away.

The bible was not written in the middle ages though, the verse about human age is from the Psalms. It is possible that people living in the kingdom of Israel lived longer than people in the medieval period due to differences in lifestyle, the amount of wars and disease etc. The Bible verse "three score and ten years" means 70 years, which is longer than the life expectation of a medieval person that survived childhood (iirc less than 60 years), it is likely people in the Biblical times lived longer than people in the medieval times

Well, we know that Robert Curthose (William the Conqueror's eldest son) lived to the age of 80, but he spent a lot of his life in a monastery after his brother, Henry, defeated him in battle. You could argue that he was protected from the diseases and lack of food that many peasants would have struggled with.

People don't know which data to use when. For things such as life expectancy, for most the more useful information would be the median . Same goes for income and the like. If one resilient grandpa or one single billionaire significantly changes your statistic that much, it is fine for research and academia, but is not illustrative for the layman anymore.

There was a "history of" podcast about a decade ago. It focused on the UK, but i can't remember the exact name, and there were a few at the time. There was a "history of England" and a "history of Britain", i can't remember which one. What i do remember was how frustratingly stupid it became once it got to the Romano-British period. I remember it started with the creator saying "but you might say 'whatever his name was' the Romans were just a group that ripped off the Greeks and stole everything they had, and anything that was good about them they stole from other people. And to you i would say 'peach on.'"😳 This is when my face instantly went🤨. From that point on it stopped being anything close to a history education, and became one of the first times i came across true "historical advocacy." Whenever something from a ancient writer came up, be it tacitus, Cassius Dio, Herodian, etc. His process of determining what was true versus what was propaganda or myth was literally: if spoke of the Britains in a positive light, then it was clearly true, if it spoke positive of the Romans, it was myth and propaganda. I finally had enough and unsubscribed all together after hearing a round table discussion with other history podcasters to discuss whether Rome really had as much impact on the world as we think, or is it all bunk. Clearly his opinion was the latter. The entirety of his argument as to why Rome really didn't add much to Western culture as people thing was boiled down to: they were mean. All he talked about was how they enslaved people, made people fight in the arena and were (in his almost childishly narrow minded opinion) were exceptionally blood thirst, far more then everyone else. When one other person started to list off just the obvious signs of their impact, like roads, infrastructure, etc. The guys literally whining retort was "yeah but John, they put millions of people into slavery, they had gladiators killing each other." It was insanely stupid. He literally didn't present a single hard fact that lent any weight to this idea that Rome's impact was minimal, it was all "feelings." He also was under the strange idea that other people weren't as violent as Rome. Every time some comment about Britains being violent, or the druid's sacrificing Roman officers, he dismissed it as exaggerations and propaganda. This was back in 2012 or 13, before this kind of thing became something of a norm, so it was staggering to hear. The fact that pretty much everyone were just as capable of violence as the Romans were, but the Romans just happened to have been more successful in it's implementation didn't even cross his mind. He kept going over how Rome leaving Britain was such a big deal because Britannia was the "Crown jewel" of the Roman's provinces.🙄 What was most disheartening was to go read the reviews. Most were saying how they always wanted to know more about history, but most classes they found boring and how great it was to find something that made history interesting. I felt Cassandra yelling to everyone that the guy is not teaching them history, he's just advocating.

I've also heard the usage of "dark ages" as in "we're in the dark" due to decline of the number of sources in the early medieval period (or course "high" and late medieval periods weren't part of it) and also being used in the similar way to refer to some periods of the Greek history (like after the Bronze age collapse). Nowadays, historians tend to not use the term what so ever, because it is sttill painting the whole periods in the negative light which isn't a desirable thing when you try to actually understand it.

I've always personally ascribed to the idea of "You can't look at history with a modern lens--you need to look at it through the perspective of the people at the time" You can't really analyze medieval history with knowledge of 2023, or whatever, you have to analyze it with the understanding of 1000, or 1200, or whatever time frame. You can't say "Well if X had done Y, they wouldn't have had Z" because that's not what they had at the time. Or maybe, they did try it, and it didn't work.

I do this to myself way too often, but sometimes you have to shine light on ignorance to expose it.

It make me angry to see how many different factions nowdays are manipulating, denying or completely rewriting the past to suit their own narratives. Surely we need to preserve as much of the facts about our history as possible. How do we learn not to make similar mistakes, or appreciate what was good and simple, what they did better than us. When we make up shit were doing it to stroke our own egos or condemn others. It benifits nobody in the end. Thank YOU Metatron for always being the voice of reason. 🙏

Except nigh-everyone thinks they *are* preserving the facts. Very few people set out to actively lie and misinform. There aren't a ton of organized cabals seeking to "manipulate" history. About the only one I could point to as genuinely attempting to distort the facts is nonsense like the Confederate apologists and "Lost Cause"-ers.

I'm so happy I found this channel lol. I freaking LOVE your content! My 11 yr old son and I like to watch your videos and then set a time aside to discuss what we learned, we both like the way you give us the facts and when your opinion is said, YOU SAY THAT ITS YOUR OPINION! There's like no channels anywhere and literally anything, that isn't tainted with woke political bullsh*t

as a gay guy, it is a little offensive for this Medieval Madness guy to basically say “these guys hung out often so being gay was accepted in this society”. If that was a thing, homosexually historically would never have been controversial. lol

This noble one is my most shared channel to my children and they love it. Truth, logic and reason are the benchmark we should all be striving for. Thank you sir.
