Hello Everybody,
As you can guess, I really hit a wall this week. I'm taking time I don't really have to spare to regroup and reframe, so every time I touch one of those blasted books, it doesn't trigger a FOMO response in my brain.
Fear of not knowing something yet because I haven't read it. Fear of letting go of my YA's homeschool years. Fear of forgetting younger me's interests in old movie stars and my G.O.A.T. musicians. Fear of forgetting the title of that one book I heard about that I want to read some day.
This one's gonna be a little rough...sorry for the sniffling. This week was a lil emotional sitting with all this and having so little sleep.
Live. Laugh. Love.
Your Pal,
Whit

My husband teases me “you can’t save all the books” but I often try. I’ve been going to the library more and really enjoy the hunt for my next book and the ability to return it for someone else to love. Keep decluttering. You’re on the right path!

I was going to ask if you'd consider Dana K. White's methods for decluttering. I'm glad you're aware of her process. Regarding books, I think any scientific journals or books are out of date and can be discarded. It may help if you concentrate on one room, maybe the kitchen. Start in a corner or with a group, food, for instance. You'll see immediate progress, which will be helpful to you. You're doing a good job. You have a lot to tackle, and it can easily become overwhelming. Doing as much as you can within your schedule each day will help. I wish I could come help! Take care, Linda 🦋

I have to say, your room is cozy and beautiful. It will be nice to see your family living in the room and not your stuff living in it. Keep up the good work, progress is being made.

LOL I love books too! My mother was a teacher, and my father was a bookworm. He used to use the arms of his chairs as bookshelves, so I come by it honestly. So far, my books are in boxes by subject, hardly any fiction, not my thing. But, no need to keep cookbooks that use animal products when I only eat plant-based whole food. So, sorting books may be a good place to start, so long as I don't make the fatal mistake of opening them. Can take the ones I don't want to a used book store and hopefully make a few dollars.

Your doing great, don't beat yourself up. Remember, when you were home schooling your daughter there wasn't the availability of all the materials you might need on the internet. Now, anything you need can be found on the internet. If its something that has special interest to your son, then by all means keep it. But, otherwise; out of date books wont help him at all. He seems extremely intelligent and may do better with a tablet. Are you sure you want to home school him, he may get more education for his needs with a professional. You can't be everything to everyone or your gonna crash. Home school him if you want and that's what your heart tells you to do. But, some outside help might help him. I do agree with you when you said to get rid of the obvious, right there will make a difference. You are not, not, not a failure. You are doing so good!!!!!!!!! Keep going, don't give up on yourself, I for one am so proud of how far you have come!!!!! ❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋

I just watched your decluttering of cross stitch video. I understand how difficult it was for you to part with some of those projects. I'm almost 72 years old and am doing the Swedish death cleaning so my daughter and husband don't have to deal with my overabundance. Here's my unsolicited advice. Life is a short and energy declines for many of us as we age. Less really is more. I've been a serial crafter and enjoyed crewel, cross stitch, macrame, quilting, and a little bit of gift card holder making along the way. I overbought on all of them. We all make mistakes along the way. Time is limited. The only project you seemed genuinely excited to do was the train cross stitch for your dad. If you finish that one your heart will sing. Best of luck on your decluttering journey.

You are doing such a great job!! Please don't beat yourself up. It's a very difficult job & you have a lot on your plate . I am 75 & arthritic & have started decluttering 4 months ago. Huge under taking but it is getting there. Just take time for yourself & family & be happy with what you have done. God bless....

When i come across items that I'm emotional about or unsure of i put them back and let my subconscious work on it for awhile (days/weeks or longer) and then most of the time i come back to it totally at peace with letting it go. But sometimes i keep it. Depends. I struggle with clutter too.

You are doing amazing! The books brought out a lot of emotions, but you talked your way through it which was so good. One step at a time ❤

Wow! You're doing a great job! :D Progress -- hooray! It totally makes sense to get overwhelmed + to take a break, but you already made it better on each of the shelves + in future passes maybe you'll feel ready to part with some other ones (+ YES, working on the more visible areas first, the ones that you'll need to use when the guests are coming makes total sense!) ALSO you now have a better idea of what you've got on those shelves to be able to use them :) + that sounds great about packing away the grade school things (while also having documented them :) ) + I agree with what @judithwoomer7747 said -- these books may have made sense to physically own in a previous season of life + now it may make sense to let some of them go :) But yes, the feelings + the memories -- so hard to work through! but you are making progress, well done!
