Why did Lord Shiva destroy Tripurasura?

Tripurasura is a well-known demon in Hinduism. They were the son's of Taraka, a daitya (demon) king who conquered the heavens and defeated Indra. Tripurasura was so powerful that they defeated even Agni, Vayu, and Surya, which caused an imbalance in the world. Lord Shiva came to fight Them with his Pashupatastra (Astra) as requested by devas to restore order in the world.

The war-chariot designed for Shiva was different. The Earth or Prithvi became the chariot with the Sun and Moon its wheels. Brahma was holding the reins. Mount Meru became the bow and the serpent Vasuki was the bow string. Vishnu was the arrow, and Agni was the tip of the arrow. Vayu was inside the feathers on rear of the arrow. All other Devas had their own places and forms in the chariot. Just as the cities aligned, when the Pushya Nakshatra positioned appropriately, Lord Shiva was about to strung the mighty bow, the Pinaka with the arrow, the Devas were overjoyed that Tripura was going to be destroyed because of them (because they were part of the war-chariot, without which Shiva cannot destroy). Lord Shiva, knowing what the Devas were thinking, did not fire the arrow and just smiled. All the three purams were burned immediately. Shocked at this act, Brahma pleaded that Devas thought wrong and that Shiva should forgive and release the arrow, or else the Devas would have a permanent bad name and the reason behind making this chariot would become meaningless. Shiva then fired the arrow on the already burning Cities. When Lord shiva seated on the chariot before heading to war, chariot was unable to move forward due to the lord's weight, Lord Vishnu took form as bull and dragged the chariot and then became the bull flag on top of chariot. After destroying three cities Lord Shiva started tandava nritya on debris which is also called as "Tripura Nasha Nartana".

there are description of cities travelling as space aircrafts in many stories of the Bhagavatam such as Salva's against Krishna or the one built by Kardama Muni to travel with Devahuti for 36000 celestial years. Therefore there were cities moving as aircrafts and no aircrafts wrongly described as cities. Who narrated and who wrote the sacred texts were not ordinary personalities. Vimana or space aircrafts are well described.

He said that he can not go against the Veda and righteousness as king Tripur was following all these. At this point Brahma told the story-any one who is fervent devotee of Siva he can not be killed. He told even Ravana could not be killed by the Sudarshan Chakra of Vishnu, so he had to take re-birth as incarnation through Rama and he had to worship to Siva before going in war with Ravana which is now the Rameshwar temple of Siva. Brahma said-when we all the gods went to Siva and complained him of the activity of Tripur then Lord Mahadeva said that-Tripur is ardent devotee of him, he had not done any irreligious acts so he can not kill his follower Tripur. All the gods returned empty handed from the Mount Kailash, the abode of lord Siva and asked to go to Vishnu. They are all despaired and broken hearted. Now again all the gods sought the help and suggestion from Vishnu. They are asked to do Yagna for Siva, a Makhpati was born. They requested him to destroy and kill Tripur. But he replied that he could do nothing to a person who is the diehard follower of Siva. Then Vishnu made one crore Sivalinga and worshipped and meditated for Siva nonstop day and night. Siva was pleased by this and blessed hem with Trishul, gada, and many demons and power rakshas soldiers were born out of it; all of them were ordered to go for a fight with Tripur and kill him, taking all the arms and ammunition that was given by lord Siva. But as soon as they entered the kingdom of king Tripur all them were burnt to ashes by the power of lord Siva. When Vishnu got the news of this, he was saddened and made a deep meditation to get the answer of it. He asked all the gods to make a Siva linga and worship him for three nights. After that Vishnu himself sat for meditation and worship of Siva, when a man was born out of his body by the name of Mundi, he was then ordered to go to the kingdom of Tripur and preach irreligion. For this Vishnu wore a false religious book containing 16,000 sloka. It was against the Veda and purana, against the virtues, manners, ethics, and code of conduct. Mundi first preached from this false scripture among the people of kingdom of Tripur, then Narada in disguise became the disciple, and the same was intimated to Tripurasur. He was very much pleased, glad and happy to learn the false irreligious scripture of Vishnu. Tripur was then made ardent disciple of Mundi, and was hypnotized to do all irreligious and acts of vices and immoral. Every boy was busy with sensual pleasure and physical comforts. The were showing disregard to Siva and his customs, there was not a single linga worshipped in the land of Tripur. By seeing this, the God of gods, the Lord Siva, the Mahadeva; the Maheshwara got angry. He then determined to kill Tripur, the devotee of false gods, followers of irreligious rituals, and unsacred books. Shiva then meditated for years together to invent special Trisul which we may equalize with the present day atom bomb. Tripur was killed instantaneously by lord Siva. All the people are also convinced that they were following false gods. According to Hindu mythology the name of Tripura state derived his way. According to Rajmala, the royal chronicle of Tripura, Tripur was son of king Daitya. He was very much ritualistic and religious person, he was kind hearted and compassionate to the people. Tripur was very arrogant, proud, ruthless, heartless, and merciless. He banned the worship of Siva and other ritualistic activity in his country, people were tortured, put to death sentence even for minor crimes, where as he was acting like leader of a criminal gang. The people of his kingdom were suffering from different brutal tortures, they were suppressed, oppressed, even women were not spared. He used to capture any women as his wife, whoever was beautiful, whether married or unmarried. Every body felt unsafe and insecure in the land of Tripura kingdom. So one day all the citizen of Tripura prayed to the almighty God of gods lord Siva to save them from the oppression of Tripur. Thus he was happy by their prayer of his children and asked their desire. They sought relief from the iron hands of Tripur, which he assured them. So one day lord Siva appeared before king Tripur, when he tried to attack Siva back. Siva at once took out his Trisul and thrown on Tripur and killed him. The queen of Tripur, Heeravati was then blessed with a virtuous son, Trilochan or respectfully known as Subrai or Sibrai as blessed by him. The land of Tripura was named after this mighty king, Tripur. It was how the name of Tripura had derived according to the historical royal chronicle of Tripura the Rajmala.

There is a slight correction here in this story 1: Tripurasuras asked Vishwakarma ( the architect of devalok) to build this city tripura which will be indestructible ,however vishwakarma said that it is against the laws of nature , so he will put a weakness in the city i;e it will be taken down by 1 arrow . 2. Every 1000 years the tripura( the tri city fortress) will align and form in a straight line which will reveal the weakness for a short span of time . 3. When Lord Shiva was requested to destroy tripura and vanquish tripurasuras , he needed a bow powerdul enough to handle the arrow which was having bramhashira ( lord brahma's head ) as arrow head and lord vishnu as the tail fin to guide the arrow ,. At that time they thought to bring Gandhiva bow ,however the string couldnt withstand the enormous strength of shiva ,that is when vishwakarma made the most fabled weapon , VIJAYA danush which was used to vanquish tripurasuras and eventually if you read Mahabharata ,Suryaputra Karna got it .

Tripura state history is from Tripura kingdom. The Royal family are from Lunar dynasty of 184 king listed. It's history started before Mahabharata. It's later yayati/jajati left his father kingdom for a reason (find in Hinduism book) never to become king, it's later his son became the king somewhere in west Bengal area. Slowly slowly the king generation move to present area Tripura. The kingdom followers are from mostly Borok clan & its other clan branch are from Hindimba kingdom now known as Kachari of Assam. Hindimba is a part of Mahabharata history...

Different Version of the Story as per History of Tripura state..There was a king named Daitya..he had a son who was disabled and was not sharp enough to handle Daitya's kingdom in the coming days..So Daitya prayed to Lord Shiva for years (near the present day Kamakhaya temple) he asked for a Son that is so capable that he would be similar to Lord shiva himself, He Has to be victorious in all three lokas(swarga, prithibi,patal), and no oneelse but only lord shiva himself could destroy him. so therefore, Lord shiva gave him the Boon, The child was born , they named him Tripura. As he was so powerful he would be victorious in all Tri lokas..Tripura was a Devotee of lord Shiva..When he became the king ..He and his kingdom would only worship Lord shiva.. Ignoring other gods...So by this The other gods felt mistreated and made a complain to lord Vishnu...in short ,lord Vishnu tricked king Tripura into doing irreligious activities.. so he could convince Shiva himself to destroy Tripura.. so yeah later, king tripura is killed by lord shiva.. And Made new rules . That from now All 14 Gods(shiva,vishnu,brahma, sun,moon,Gangas,fire,kartikya,ganesha, kamadev, Himalayas, Saraswati,Prabha,Yama)should be worshipped in this kingdom..since then the tripura kingdom is known as Land of 14 Gods.

I find it hard that asurs, who were virtuous, following vedas and devotees of Shiva were deliberately led astray, that too by Vishnu, and then destroyed. Isn't that unfair on part of Gods? What harm was done by asurs to others that devas had to request their destruction? They grew powerful and prosperous by their own merit and not by wrongful ways. This story is not consistent as to how righteous asurs were treated in the past like Prahlad and Raja Bali. If the asurs of Tripurasur indeed troubled other dietes and their sin was so great to warrant destruction, does that not give Shiva the right to destroy them right away instead of waiting for Vishnu to lead them astray and then destroy them? Something doesn't seem right. Does anybody know the original authentic story?

Tripur was very arrogant, proud, ruthless, heartless, and merciless. He banned the worship of Siva and other ritualistic activity in his country, people were tortured, put to death sentence even for minor crimes, where as he was acting like leader of a criminal gang. The people of his kingdom were suffering from different brutal tortures, they were suppressed, oppressed, even women were not spared. He used to capture any women as his wife, whoever was beautiful, whether married or unmarried. Every body felt unsafe and insecure in the land of Tripura kingdom. So one day all the citizen of Tripura prayed to the almighty God of gods lord Siva to save them from the oppression of Tripur. Thus he was happy by their prayer of his children and asked their desire. They sought relief from the iron hands of Tripur, which he assured them. So one day lord Siva appeared before king Tripur, when he tried to attack Siva back. Siva at once took out his Trisul and thrown on Tripur and killed him. The queen of Tripur, Heeravati was then blessed with a virtuous son, Trilochan or respectfully known as Subrai or Sibrai as blessed by him. The land of Tripura was named after this mighty king, Tripur. It was how the name of Tripura had derived according to the historical royal chronicle of Tripura the Rajmala.

All the vedic knowledge points towards Govinda as being the source of everything. All the rishi's sages acharyas demigods even Mahadev himself says this to be true that Krsna is the Supreme Person. That's shows God is a real person and from that supreme person everything else is manifested. From his Devine form came the formless Bhrama jotir or light effulgence that actually eminates of Krsnas transcendental body. Krishna is the Absolute truth, where the demigods represent relative truths.

Here is a Funny story mentionrd in Shiva Purana : Three Demons had once obtained immortal Great Cities of Tripura in the Sky from Brahma. From these bases, they terrorized the denizens of both Earth and Heaven. To put an end to this, Gods approached Shiva and asked him for help. Shiva said he would shoot a single arrow to destroy the 3 Cities when they eclipsed.
