Love Mykal Rose. He is the voice but Junior Reed with Brutal and Cowboy Town are my favorites songs of Black Uhuru.

So true. Without Mykal Roz the Black Uhuru band was just another ordinary reggae band. I also don't know why Don Carlos chose to be embroiled in the Uhuru ownership saga when he is such a successful and world famous solo artist.

@@tafimutekwe2855Yeah. I guess the name Black Uhuru carried a very heavy weight...Funny how many harp Don Carlos' reputation around the Uhuru brand name...He actually left the group for lack of success..They never released an album in that period of 72-75, just a handful of successful singles like Romancing the Folk Song a cover of a song by Curtis Mayfield and Perhaps, Rent Man.. Carlos actually came of age when he went solo..The best decision he could've made...

Thanks my brother for the invaluable information. True, a solo career was the best decision Don McCarlos ever made for his career. @@lawrencenjawe9875

Yes indeed. The group Black Uhuru will always be symbolized by Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Ducky Simpson on one hand; Sly and Robbie on the other. Any other adaptation of the group, whether familiar or otherwise, is simply commercial.

Mykal Rose survived the music business at a time when the imperialist wanted to take down Rastafarians big time.

Player mentality (mind) and “psychological” readiness/preparedness, a dearth in creativity, player selection, playing some players off positions, team lost that “telepathy” they once had (consistency)…responsibility comes down to the “ability” of the commander to lead and inspire the team to perform…

why are so many of these Rastafari quoting brothers (including the Wailers) always at odds with one another... does it speak to their sincerity? are they just profiling for business? I loved Mykal Rose's songs... was so disappointed when I heard that even when they are performing they are not speaking to each other... joke business? I still miss the REAL Uhuru with Puma Jones as the main attraction...

Michael Rose was King of the pack laying the foundation of the band international notoriety along with the riddim Twins (the incomparable Sly and Robbie) and Duckie should be grateful for it...And the track Youth of Eglington was written by Micheal Rose essentially. Of the 8 tracks Simpson co-wrote Sistren, Rockstone and wrote Journey singlehandedly. All available on the album credits and the cassette's flap which i eagerly purchased back in '83..

My late bosom friend Laurence Karenge allowed me to sample the vinyl of Red a year earlier in 1982 when we were still starry - eyed youths (and the track Youths of Eglington resonated very well with us.) This album remains one of the greatest solid rock reggae production ever made (and no wonder it snatched the very first reggae Grammy award)

@@tafimutekwe2855 The Red Album was a very solid work of contemporary reggae. Creative, quite innovative with a hard rock edge (notice the producer completely dropped out Horn section..Many forces worked together to create this gem starting from Sly and Robbie, Dougie Bryan and Dwight Pinkney on guitar, Franklyn Blubber Waul on keys and of course Michael Rose's brilliant vocal delivery and songwriting.. And crucially the mixer or producer decided to highlight Puma's vocals a pitch higher allowing the proceedings to portray a more intense feel. That said however Red never won a Grammy. By the early 80s the American music circles hadn't yet endorsed the Reggae category at the Grammies..Their late 1983 album Anthem won a Grammy in 1985

Rasta, like most Black-Afrikan movements, is mostly an idealized utopian society, but reality sets in. I just thank the old time Rasta for teaching me that I was Black-Afrikan as a boy in the 70s. Other than a very few real ones, like Mutabaruka, most are fakes.

All I know is Black Uhuru was never as good without Miss Puma Jones, that's first and foremost... and I think Brutal and its dubs are the magnum opus of Black Uhuru... Yes... that's one mans opinion in an ocean of them...

One man's opinion in an ocean of others. True. Yet thru out the first 6 studio albums Micheal Rose was almost completely dominant in songwriting and his vocal style defined the group's sound.... Audacious and rather adventurous the Brutal album , (steeped in electronics way more markedly than the Chill out album) has never been lauded as belonging among the canons of the group's repertoire by critics...I would even say many fans lost interest in the group when Rose left in 85.

I love the Brutal album! Dread ina Mountain and Fit you haffe fit. There are peeps in my old neighborhood that don't really follow reggae but know those songs from me blasting them on the regular and frequent! lol Good times One (Eastern European, or maybe Croation) dude I worked with heard me play Guess whose coming to dinner and went out and bought the album like 2 days later he loved it so much. I still smile thinking about him singing it in his accent. lol
